Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Mike Melvoin of The Plastic Cow Goes Moooog?
Avatar 12:36pm Franco Twinkie:

The Ceylieb People played at the Shrine Exposition Hall with The Jefferson Airplane. I wanted to go, but I was 13 years old and my parents wouldn't drive me....but I have the poster!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

My family's car in the mid-sixties was an Impala very similar to the one pictured. I have several photos of my parents standing in front of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Rich in Washington:

We were a Ford family for some reason, and had many Ford Galaxies, at least four that I can remember, perhaps testimony to their reliability ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Uncle Michael:

Yes, Rich...that Mike Melvoin. Big time L.A. studio cat, known for a lot more than the fun synth stuff. Most of that lineup was first-call L.A. studio guys. Amazingly adventurous record, considering that.
Avatar 12:40pm βrian:

If they were good enough for Efrem Zimbalist Jr ...
Avatar 12:40pm barrett785:

I wish they'd call stoner rock "Planet Caravan".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Uncle Michael:

Pat! I like that for the name of a radio show.
  12:42pm dan:

Earthless are the kind of bands that their audiences have no recollection of the shows.
Avatar 12:42pm barrett785:

Shirley it's been done.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Uncle Michael:

Only Pat can call me Shirley. The rest of you, leave off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm chresti:

My Dad sold used cars in the mid-sixties, he brought home that Impala a few times, along with MGs, Cadillacs, Peugeots, Lincolns, Nashs...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Rich in Washington:

Melvoin also played on some earlier Tom Waits albums, most notably my fave party record Nighthawks at the Diner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm coelacanth∅:

i thought of us as a chevy family, but we really only had one - a very reliable '57 bel air, which they sold for $100. to a kid who totaled it within a year. and a 63? chrysler new yorker, which i thought was the mean car because of the configuation of the headlights, and sucked in the summer because it was black.
...and a simpca that sat in the driveway for years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Uncle Michael:

My favorite party record is Redd Foxx' "You Got To Wash Yo Ass".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm coelacanth∅:

i got that Redd Foxx album for 69¢ at a thrift store
  12:47pm dan:

Hearing about Canned Heat bassist Larry Taylor's passing, I did not know that in the middle of his hiatuses from the band, he was Tom Waits' bass player.
Avatar 12:49pm holland oats:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar 12:49pm Franco Twinkie:

I Love that Redd Foxx album!
Avatar 12:50pm Franco Twinkie:

Wah wah pedel or Cry baby?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Rich in Washington:

@dan: I quite enjoy those earlier Waits albums. I dig almost all of his stuff and phases, but in the context of 70s rock, those albums were quite unique.
Avatar 12:56pm Franco Twinkie:

Tom was something else. The first time I saw him he was the opening act for Little Feat at The Troubadour. He just sat on a stool all slouchly with his hat pulled down playing the guitar. He looked like a cartoon of a bum.
  12:59pm dan:

This Klezmer track has the raw sound where it could have been recorded in the 70s or 80s.
Avatar 1:02pm Franco Twinkie:

Coel, We had a '56 and a '57 Belair at the same time! Both were cherry. As children, we had to help wash and polish them on Sundays.
Avatar 1:08pm hyde:

Avatar 1:08pm Franco Twinkie:

After thinking we had escaped real misery this summer, we are now getting are asses kicked up and down the street in grand style. It is so fucking hot!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Doug Schulkind:

Ah! My patient has cancelled, so I have a nice relaxing afternoon with a quietly wafting Hinky Dinky Time ahead!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Uncle Michael:

Wafting? Yes, I've been accused of that before.
  1:11pm dan:

Paradise Flats is the British Hotel California.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Doug Schulkind:

Wafting is good. Luft-wafting, not so good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm coelacanth∅:

Franco i liked helping to wash & wax the cars; but then it wasn't nearly every sunday.
i liked waxing, mainly because i liked the cars and liked to see the results, but the added benefit was because no one else wanted to do it i scored points with my father.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Michael 98145:

Aloha, friends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm coelacanth∅:

  1:16pm dan:

This is not my opinion, but my late aunt said that Paul McCartney should apologize for some of his solo work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm coelacanth∅:

so i hear "can't you see" and also "the man who couldn't cry" in these chords, which came first.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm listener Rey:

Does doin the Jughead involve eating large quantities of hamburgers?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Uncle Michael:

Rey! If that's your favorite way to get stoopid...go for it.
Avatar 1:29pm Franco Twinkie:

Coel, My dad liked every thing ship shape. Cars, the yard, his shoes, ect. This did not rub off on me. It drove him nuts! But, he taught me how to work, which made me very employable. For that, I am eternally gratetful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Michael 98145:

@FT, my dad taught me how to work. And help where needed. He'd say, "You've got two hands, use them!"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar 1:42pm Franco Twinkie:

Michael, It was not an option. I was not asked if I wanted to, I was told what WE were going to do. Hang around with my useless friends on Sunday? Nope, we're going to paint a shoe store, because we need the money. But looking back, those were some great experiences, and they prepared me for what became my longest job, which was building sets for TV, videos, magazine ads and movies.
Avatar 1:43pm burke:

Avatar 1:48pm Franco Twinkie:

Montreal native Oscar Peterson
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm Doug Schulkind:

I am one of "those people" who has never warmed to Oscar Peterson.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm coelacanth∅:

Franco same here about options. it's disturbing how so many kids are not told they have to do shit or not do shit, and asked what they want for dinner instead of being told it's vegetables (or whatever) or nothing. that's irresponsible parenting in my opinion. of course i hated it at the time, but i'm thankful now.
it's not supposed to be a popularity contest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm coelacanth∅:

...on the other hand my parents never heard a word i said, so i wasn't pointed in any career direction at all, let alone one i would've chosen.
  1:53pm dan:

Look on YouTube, and search for Oscar Peterson being interviewed on Dick Cavett's show. I think you'll warm up to his music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm chresti:

Franco, you can thank your dad that you didn't burn down the neighborhood
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Jeff Golick:

One of the first jazz LPs I purchased, more or less at random, was Oscar Peterson playing songs associated with Frank Sinatra. I was in over my head from the get-go.
Avatar 2:03pm hyde:

i saw Oscar Peterson play at UMass in the 80's. he was pretty darn good.
Avatar 2:04pm Franco Twinkie:

Coel, I go on about all this rock and roll hippie shit constantly, and yes that is who I am. But also a working class kid who was a terrible student and had no choice, so I picked up a hammer.

i've got "The Wasp Woman" on TCM at present for background image, and this set is syncing up just right
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Doug Schulkind:

It's not that I dismiss Peterson as a technical wizard with little soul. I adore Art Tatum, and many people would attach that description (absurdly, in my opinion) to him. I guess I can never escape the feeling that Peterson is trying to impress me. It gets in the way of his actually impressing me. That said, he is indisputably impressive. I just never seek out his music. There are 100 pianists whose records I would reach for ahead of his.

But that's just me.
  2:33pm dan:

There was a Canadian band called "Crowbar" that started as Ronnie Hawkins' backing band. They got the band name because when Hawkins fired them, he said "You guys are so crazy, you'd fuck a crowbar".

Hey UM thanks for the ABB. Just listened to Eat a Peach on Dorian evac to Macon. Visited the Big House yesterday, was very cool if you’re ever in the area.
  2:39pm dan:

A Southern Rock oddity, a vibraphone on the record, as played by Butch Trucks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Uncle Michael:

Santos! I didn't even know The Big House was opened up as an attraction. I'd dig that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm coelacanth∅:

they were from the south but they were not southern rock
..."southern blues rock"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm coelacanth∅:

(and don't forget the monkey skulls!)
Avatar 2:44pm Franco Twinkie:

]My last insufferable 'I was there' post for the day: I saw The Allman Brothers at the Hollywood Bowl on a boiling hot night in August 1972. Yes! they were that good....and then some.
  2:45pm dan:

Gong and all their offshoots sound like the Cantina Band from Star Wars.
  2:48pm Santos L Halper:

Tons of nifty memorabilia, and some of the rooms preserved as they were. Pair it with a meal at H & H soul food and a walk around the Ocmulgee mounds and that’s a good day. Fun fact: Duane’s first name is Howard : )
  2:48pm dan:

Nice transitioning between tracks.
  2:50pm Guido from Cologne:

Great Show Uncle Michael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm coelacanth∅:

okay the wikipedia page does not list "monkey skulls" in the instrumentation for eat a peach (les brers, specifically...and i always assumed it was actually wood blocks)
but i swear -though i could have imagined it, but still i'll swear the original album listed monkey skulls.
