	5:11pm Linda Lee: oh! short version: when my parents married, my father was a bookmaker for the latin syndicate in nyc & that's where he often did business at night, bringing along my mom & then, when i arrived, me. my parents didn't believe in baby sitters, so they just checked me with the coats.

	5:18pm Linda Lee: for a while i had a photo of my parents at the club ~ taken by the cigarette girl, i'm sure ~ which was probably not a great idea, as my father was sitting with the chief of police in his business district ~ but there they all were, looking stunning.

	♥ 5:24pm DJ GeorgyGirl: To be honest, I've never been to Spain either ... just remember all the kitsch holiday stuff that my parents brought back ;-) @Linda - I'm still impressed with my parents' courage in emigrating from the UK to Canada. They must have been terrified.

	5:27pm melinda: I like how it switches over to Guantanamera. That was one of the first things I learned in 4th grade Spanish class. Reminds me of being excited to start at a new school.
	♥ 5:27pm DJ GeorgyGirl: They didn't feel like they were any prospects or opportunities - "something's gotta give", that kind of feeling. And they heard The Animals "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place" on the radio ... and went to London the next day. Originally, they decided on New Zealand, but they were over-subscribed, so my parents ended up going to Canada House instead. They needed £1,000, a job offer, and travel.
	5:28pm Linda Lee: amazing. i can definitely imagine being intensely moved by that song. they dd all right then?
	♥ 5:29pm DJ GeorgyGirl: They had some savings which they topped up by selling most of their furniture, my father got a job offer from an architect's firm in Vancouver, and then they booked us on to a boat that went from Southampton to Montreal. Train from Montreal to Vancouver the other end :-) My father LOVED Canada, my mother not so much, which is why when my parents split up in the 70s my mother and I came back here.
	5:32pm Linda Lee: ah! your folks split up too! and your father stayed? by the time you got back i'd imagine Britain had perked up a bit. when you left it was still a bit war torn, going by films & newsreels from the time.

	♥ 5:34pm DJ GeorgyGirl: @melinda - I think she just never really settled there :-( @Linda - we left early '66, so kind of at the Swinging point ;-) But we were way outside of London so not quite so swinging lol

	5:38pm Linda Lee: it is very hard on a woman close to her family to leave them for a different country. my american born friend in edinburgh's had a very hard time with that ~ still feels it, after 25 years!

	5:41pm Linda Lee: no, nothing so great as that. she met & fell in love with a Scot in New York & they married in an attempt to make a life together here. alas Scotland Yard wouldn't allow it. they came up with a hashish bust from his teen years & he was given the boot. so they both left.

	5:44pm Linda Lee: oh Windy! talk about childhood memories! my mother's oldest brother managed the Association throughout their big years in the 60s ~ my first concert! we always saw them perform when they came out east. they'd send a limousine for my immigrant grandparents to bring them to the shows.

	♥ 6:05pm Rich in Washington: The Limey is one of Soderberg's best films, imo. A great performance by Terrance Stamp as well as Peter Fonda.
	6:06pm Linda Lee: i think the strings made sense for the limitations of sound reproduction at the time, when strings were popular. digital sometimes renders strings really tinny.

I lived in Bonn in the then West Germany in the mid 80s for about 7 months, and one day my friends and I visited one of the US army bases there. It was like someone had picked up Picket Fence, New Hampshire and plonked it down in Bonn. They had a whole US supermarket. Fabulous. You had to pay in dollars so we couldn't buy anything but it was fun to visit. :-)

	5:11pm Linda Lee: oh! short version: when my parents married, my father was a bookmaker for the latin syndicate in nyc & that's where he often did business at night, bringing along my mom & then, when i arrived, me. my parents didn't believe in baby sitters, so they just checked me with the coats.

	5:18pm Linda Lee: for a while i had a photo of my parents at the club ~ taken by the cigarette girl, i'm sure ~ which was probably not a great idea, as my father was sitting with the chief of police in his business district ~ but there they all were, looking stunning.

	♥ 5:24pm DJ GeorgyGirl: To be honest, I've never been to Spain either ... just remember all the kitsch holiday stuff that my parents brought back ;-) @Linda - I'm still impressed with my parents' courage in emigrating from the UK to Canada. They must have been terrified.

	5:27pm melinda: I like how it switches over to Guantanamera. That was one of the first things I learned in 4th grade Spanish class. Reminds me of being excited to start at a new school.
	♥ 5:27pm DJ GeorgyGirl: They didn't feel like they were any prospects or opportunities - "something's gotta give", that kind of feeling. And they heard The Animals "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place" on the radio ... and went to London the next day. Originally, they decided on New Zealand, but they were over-subscribed, so my parents ended up going to Canada House instead. They needed £1,000, a job offer, and travel.
	5:28pm Linda Lee: amazing. i can definitely imagine being intensely moved by that song. they dd all right then?
	♥ 5:29pm DJ GeorgyGirl: They had some savings which they topped up by selling most of their furniture, my father got a job offer from an architect's firm in Vancouver, and then they booked us on to a boat that went from Southampton to Montreal. Train from Montreal to Vancouver the other end :-) My father LOVED Canada, my mother not so much, which is why when my parents split up in the 70s my mother and I came back here.
	5:32pm Linda Lee: ah! your folks split up too! and your father stayed? by the time you got back i'd imagine Britain had perked up a bit. when you left it was still a bit war torn, going by films & newsreels from the time.

	♥ 5:34pm DJ GeorgyGirl: @melinda - I think she just never really settled there :-( @Linda - we left early '66, so kind of at the Swinging point ;-) But we were way outside of London so not quite so swinging lol
	5:35pm Linda Lee: right. all of the UK was not London. :-) this Feliciano number reminds me of that hit from Sergio Mendes that we loved so much.. mas que nada!

	5:38pm Linda Lee: it is very hard on a woman close to her family to leave them for a different country. my american born friend in edinburgh's had a very hard time with that ~ still feels it, after 25 years!

	5:41pm Linda Lee: no, nothing so great as that. she met & fell in love with a Scot in New York & they married in an attempt to make a life together here. alas Scotland Yard wouldn't allow it. they came up with a hashish bust from his teen years & he was given the boot. so they both left.

	5:44pm Linda Lee: oh Windy! talk about childhood memories! my mother's oldest brother managed the Association throughout their big years in the 60s ~ my first concert! we always saw them perform when they came out east. they'd send a limousine for my immigrant grandparents to bring them to the shows.

	♥ 6:05pm Rich in Washington: The Limey is one of Soderberg's best films, imo. A great performance by Terrance Stamp as well as Peter Fonda.
	6:06pm Linda Lee: i think the strings made sense for the limitations of sound reproduction at the time, when strings were popular. digital sometimes renders strings really tinny.

I lived in Bonn in the then West Germany in the mid 80s for about 7 months, and one day my friends and I visited one of the US army bases there. It was like someone had picked up Picket Fence, New Hampshire and plonked it down in Bonn. They had a whole US supermarket. Fabulous. You had to pay in dollars so we couldn't buy anything but it was fun to visit. :-)

	6:13pm melinda: My cousin was stationed at one of those bases in Germany in the 70s, from his stories it sounds like what you described. Still lives there as a civilian.

	6:15pm Linda Lee: ahahaha! i have a different association. i'm 6 or 7 years old & find i like watching the young girls on the beach too, just like the guy singing!
	6:15pm Mr Fab: I remember going thru my records in the pre internet days and realized i had like 18 versions of “Girl from Ipanema.” Moog versions, disco versions, females singing “The Boy from Ipanema”, you name it...
