Hey there!
LoriHajiTura is Anti Labour Day today with a nice relaxing mix ;-)
All YOU have to do is take off your shoes and find an easy chair :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Out of curiousity ... why IS it called Labour Day?
  4:54pm
Linda Lee:

Labor Day is a day of appreciation for those who work for compensation, from a time when the US had strong labor movements. hi!
Avatar 4:56pm

(then came the Reagan Revolution. may his spirit roast.)

oh! short version: when my parents married, my father was a bookmaker for the latin syndicate in nyc & that's where he often did business at night, bringing along my mom & then, when i arrived, me. my parents didn't believe in baby sitters, so they just checked me with the coats.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm

Back when cigarette girls were all cute as buttons :-) I do love seeing the old photos of people in their best clothes

your parents liked to travel! good for them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

To be honest, I've never been to Spain either ... just remember all the kitsch holiday stuff that my parents brought back ;-)
@Linda - I'm still impressed with my parents' courage in emigrating from the UK to Canada. They must have been terrified.
Avatar 5:25pm
Linda Lee:

that is impressive! why did they emigrate?
Avatar 5:26pm
Linda Lee:

have you told us before?
  5:27pm
melinda:

I like how it switches over to Guantanamera. That was one of the first things I learned in 4th grade Spanish class. Reminds me of being excited to start at a new school.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

They didn't feel like they were any prospects or opportunities - "something's gotta give", that kind of feeling. And they heard The Animals "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place" on the radio ... and went to London the next day. Originally, they decided on New Zealand, but they were over-subscribed, so my parents ended up going to Canada House instead. They needed £1,000, a job offer, and travel.
Avatar 5:28pm
Linda Lee:

amazing. i can definitely imagine being intensely moved by that song. they dd all right then?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

They had some savings which they topped up by selling most of their furniture, my father got a job offer from an architect's firm in Vancouver, and then they booked us on to a boat that went from Southampton to Montreal. Train from Montreal to Vancouver the other end :-)
My father LOVED Canada, my mother not so much, which is why when my parents split up in the 70s my mother and I came back here.
Avatar 5:32pm
Linda Lee:

ah! your folks split up too! and your father stayed?
by the time you got back i'd imagine Britain had perked up a bit. when you left it was still a bit war torn, going by films & newsreels from the time.
  5:32pm
melinda:

@GG what did your mom not like about Canada?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@melinda - I think she just never really settled there :-(
@Linda - we left early '66, so kind of at the Swinging point ;-) But we were way outside of London so not quite so swinging lol
Avatar 5:35pm
Linda Lee:

right. all of the UK was not London. :-)
this Feliciano number reminds me of that hit from Sergio Mendes that we loved so much.. mas que nada!
  5:35pm
melinda:

I can imagine how hard it might be to settle in another country.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Which you might hear later ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

My father's more sociable than my mother so he was better at making new friends. My mother just missed her family really, I think.
Avatar 5:36pm
Linda Lee:

oh lovely. just love that one. everything good about my childhood is in it. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

All this music puts me in a very happy childhood place :-)
Avatar 5:38pm
Linda Lee:

it is *very* hard on a woman close to her family to leave them for a different country. my american born friend in edinburgh's had a very hard time with that ~ still feels it, after 25 years!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Was that an artistic move? (I'm thinking Fringe :-) )
Avatar 5:40pm
Linda Lee:

oh you poor woman. Turkey In The Straw!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I hate that song. lol
  5:41pm
melinda:

That sounds awful. Turkey in the Straw is a standard tune for ice cream trucks over here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

God - they play it on ice-cream trucks???? That would drive me insane. lol.
Avatar 5:41pm
Linda Lee:

no, nothing so great as that. she met & fell in love with a Scot in New York & they married in an attempt to make a life together here. alas Scotland Yard wouldn't allow it. they came up with a hashish bust from his teen years & he was given the boot. so they both left.
Avatar 5:41pm

i think she did very well, frankly.

Wait ... or Newcastle. On of the two. Never made it to Scotland tho.

oh Windy! talk about childhood memories! my mother's oldest brother managed the Association throughout their big years in the 60s ~ my first concert! we always saw them perform when they came out east. they'd send a limousine for my immigrant grandparents to bring them to the shows.

Hmmm ... probably. I was obsessed with Peanuts as a child, so that makes sense. :-)
Avatar 5:52pm

there might've been an outhouse there at one time .. the house was very old.. but we definitely had a bathroom. with sink!
love this 'tico tico'!!
Avatar 5:53pm
Linda Lee:

you too? gosh i was too.
what was childhood in the 60s without Peanuts? they were colossal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

My mother and stepfather bought a house (end of terrace Victorian) in the mid 80s and that still had an outside loo. Much building and converting later to get a whole bathroom!
Avatar 5:54pm
Linda Lee:

i had a Peanuts t shirt i would not allow to be washed. i loved it so much. they had to resort to trickery to get out away from me.
Avatar 5:54pm

yes. eventually the women had to have indoor bathing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm

Paul Mauriat could use the strings. sometimes the string arrangements curl my teeth, but this isn't bad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I know what you mean ... although the "clean up on aisle 3" moments make me chuckle in these songs. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm
Rich in Washington:

The Limey is one of Soderberg's best films, imo. A great performance by Terrance Stamp as well as Peter Fonda.
Avatar 6:06pm
Linda Lee:

i think the strings made sense for the limitations of sound reproduction at the time, when strings were popular. digital sometimes renders strings really tinny.

DJ GeorgyGirl:

Today's show is making me remember ... I lived in Bonn in the then West Germany in the mid 80s for about 7 months, and one day my friends and I visited one of the US army bases there. It was like someone had picked up Picket Fence, New Hampshire and plonked it down in Bonn. They had a whole US supermarket. Fabulous. You had to pay in dollars so we couldn't buy anything but it was fun to visit. :-)

I went to the wedding of some friends back in the 90s and the DJ was being a smart arse and playing trendy music ... and no one was getting up. So one of my other friends took over, put Tom Jones "Help Yourself" on the deck and the entire venue got up and danced. lol.
