Hey Kurt. The flipside of Sally Go 'Round The Roses, Sing Along With The Jaynettes is real good too! I like to imagine Grace Slick and Tim Buckley both sang along with it and said "Fuck yeah, I'm doing this!" before they played it in public.

some folks here know this, but a lady i cared for was the first treasurer of the ny mycological society when Cage was chair. she had many great stories to tell of their outings. fun times! she saw lots of initial performances of his work in new york. adored him.

linda, that's great! i'd love to have heard her tales.

fred, you only have to keep punching yourself until the archive is up.
Avatar 1:34pm
Linda Lee:

Kurt, they'd sit in a ditch somewhere near a forest after hunting fungi & talk about how his work was going. my friend remembered John's description of a certain premier in Europe, possibly Paris, where the audience was so upset by the performance they threw garbage at the musicians. John was thrilled by that. they were paying attention!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm
Franco Twinkie:

Linda, In 1984 I saw John Cage and Merce Cunningham together at the Pasadena Civic. John fiddled with a pile of old radios on a table while Merce jumped around and ran back and forth. It was close to my house, so I walked to the show.
Avatar 1:35pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

linda, such a good story
Avatar 1:36pm
Linda Lee:

that's my idea of fun to watch, Franco.
it's easy to forget how utterly senseless Cage's work seemed for a long time, to general audiences. a joke punchline. absurdity. fraud. i, personally, love his work & most likely would have loved him just as my friend did. always a twinkle in his eye, she told me.

all that airplay back when, ruined this song for me totally. i'm trying, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm
Doug Schulkind:

From Wikipedia:

"The song is also of note for having the highest note ever hit on an alto saxophone by Phil Kenzie on a studio recording as a lead into the sax solo as Peter White's acoustic guitar solo was ending."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm
listener james from westwood:

It's stuff in the early/mid '90s that falls into that category of radio overplay for me. I lost a vote at the office to have FMU on, and they switched to the local top 40 channel. I kept tick marks for the # of times I heard dross like Ace of Base and Sheryl Crow. 6 times for some songs in 8 hours! Agonizing.

i think i'd stopped hearing commercial radio by then. no idea!
