So for me, it feels better in the middle of a free form format as opposed to a heavily scripted playlist format.

The genius of WFMU is that there are no playlists and "stress tracks" determined by the "sponsors." The DJs are free to throw their favorite rock/pop and such in a blender and just re-visit and and re-contextualize based on just what they like...
