Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm Matt from New Orleans:

Hey Larry. I’m here. I’ve been listening to Gary for a few.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Matt! I'm listening to Gary, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm Matt from New Orleans:

I went over to my friend’s house earlier to help him prep what to me seems like an absurd amount of meat that he’s going to smoke tonight/tomorrow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm Matt from New Orleans:

I’m not even sure I’ll be staying there long tomorrow afternoon as it’s supposed to be in the mid to high 90s with lots of humidity. His backyard doesn’t have enough shade.

Everyone ready for the 4th of July special?
Avatar 10:01pm Jeff Ash:

Reporting for duty from the great state of Wisconsin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm Funky16Corners:

@Matt - I don't think any amount of meat can be described as absurd as long as you're smoking it
Avatar 10:01pm Erica:

Listening from the garden state of New Jersey, south Jersey that is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm Gary:

Howdy, Larry & Testifees!

Avatar 10:03pm Franco Twinkie:

Matt, I was just out in the front yard trying to asses the likely hood of burning the house down if I should do my patriotic duty by firing up the grill.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm Matt from New Orleans:

I’d recommend a chimney starter rather than lighter fluid if you’re using charcoal
Avatar 10:05pm Franco Twinkie:

Larry! I know you're in the kitchen tomorrow.
Avatar 10:06pm still b/p:

Love the tilty Edsellence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - I may just be the helper tomorrow. I think Jen is going to make some mussels!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm Funky16Corners:

Hey SBP!
Avatar 10:10pm Franco Twinkie:

Mussels - thrown on the grill until they open up?
Avatar 10:10pm Erica:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm Funky16Corners:

Steamed with Thai spices!
Avatar 10:11pm Franco Twinkie:

Okay now!
Avatar 10:11pm Erica:

All we need now is Granny Spicy Tuna's .Gif image to dance to the music.

C'mon Granny! Where you at! Jump in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm Funky16Corners:

BTW You can follow along on the map at the bottom of the playlist.
Avatar 10:17pm Franco Twinkie:

Larry, when I'm at my mom's house and she's really driving me nuts, I duck out to the Thai restaurant by her house and get a seafood curry loaded with mussels to set me right. I go back to her house a different man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm Funky16Corners:

I used to get a Thai seafood stew called talay sarm rod. I haven't found it on a menu in years
Avatar 10:18pm still b/p:

There's work I should do tomorrow, and a separate definite commitment I must keep for a portion of the day. No holiday freedom. No picnic. No party. Just my spirit draped in the red, white and blue bunting of self-pity. Maybe bike in latter part of day and meet someone for the mobby music and fireworks scene on the waterfront. I'll stand up on the grassy slope and shout, in the manner of Robert Taylor in the Colosseum crowd in Quo Vadis, "Citizens of Maine! I WORKED today!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm Funky16Corners:

As long as you shout it at the fireworks, all is not lost
Avatar 10:22pm Franco Twinkie:

Still b/p, you're a real cut up when you're depressed.
Avatar 10:22pm Erica:

Oh yeah, Steely Dan!
  10:25pm Dean:

Checking in to see what's going on. Sorry to say I'm playing an old Jorma/Jack record, so I can't listen just now.

For those who care, I blame Steely Dan for the downfall of rock 'n' roll. They were close to the very worst.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm Funky16Corners:

Hi Dean! Thanks for checking in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm Funky16Corners:

Manasquan is right around the corner!

You're welcome.

Avatar 10:28pm Franco Twinkie:

Dean! The Cars, Steely Dan, make it a trifecta, who else?
Avatar 10:28pm geezerette:

Howdy, Larry and other fellow citizens!
  10:28pm Dean:

Neil Young.
Avatar 10:28pm Franco Twinkie:

  10:30pm Dean:

Ironically, I *just* played Roxy Music's "Hurricane" minutes ago. Which proves my point: Neil can't even deliver his own decent songs to any degree of respectability.
Avatar 10:31pm geezerette:

Highly recommend "Rolling Thunder Revue"for a shot of Rock 'n Roll stage prescence. Electric!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm Funky16Corners:

I'm sending Neil over to your house.
Avatar 10:32pm Erica:

Haha Larry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm Matt from New Orleans:

Dean aside from the WFMU message boards where else do you share your years of accumulated wisdom? Do you print pamphlets and stand on street corners haranguing people to take them?
Avatar 10:33pm Kris Holmes:

Hey all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Kris!
Avatar 10:34pm Franco Twinkie:

Avatar 10:34pm Kris Holmes:

My Mom just saw Neil in Vancouver last month & of all the times she’s seen him from the 90s through, this was the best
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm Funky16Corners:

Hey C!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm Funky16Corners:

I can't say I dig everything he ever did, but Neil gets the 100% seal of approval anyway. Anyone who founded Buffalo Springfield and Crazy Horse is OK in my book
Avatar 10:36pm northguineahills:

Avatar 10:36pm Kris Holmes:

We went to Corpus for a few nights last 4th of July, not making that mistake again (heat, crowds, traffic related) so we’re just gonna stay at home!
Avatar 10:36pm Erica:

Haha ngh. Also, I enjoyed that Little Feat song.
Avatar 10:37pm northguineahills:

Is it me, or is the volume a wee bit low.....?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm Funky16Corners:

NGH! Chresti!
Avatar 10:37pm still b/p:

A friend of mine saw Roling Thunder in MA in '75, and asked me this week -- he couldn't remember -- if I was there with him, because he thought maybe he saw both of us in the Scorcese film. I didn't go to the concert. If I'm in the movie, I think Marty's creating "deep fake" video clips as part of his whole documentaire elastique approach to veracity and twisticity.
  10:37pm Dean:

I have no accumulated wisdom. It's a day to day thing, man. But I really don't get the affection for so many of the lauded artists like NY. I don't like...for example...Nick Drake, Elvis Costello, Can, Scott Walker...the list goes on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm Funky16Corners:

NGH - might be you, all my levels checking out
Avatar 10:38pm Kris Holmes:

Don’t forget about the Mynah Birds either, Neil Young & Rick James trying to be the Stones? No way I don’t wanna see that lol
Avatar 10:38pm northguineahills:

Miami, where I got my staph infection, jumping a fence on the interstate to relieve myself when I got cut. At least I had fun w/ the Talibam! lads that weekend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm Funky16Corners:

Don't get me started on that Rolling Thunder movie... (takes of hat and rolls up sleeves)
Avatar 10:39pm northguineahills:

huh, my volume is maxed out on both my laptop and equalizer.
Avatar 10:40pm Franco Twinkie:

The Sultans - Aurora.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm Funky16Corners:

Anybody else having volume issues?
Avatar 10:41pm Kris Holmes:

Nope, volume seems fine here
Avatar 10:41pm Erica:

No volume issues here Larry. It's actually a bit louder than usual on my end.
Avatar 10:41pm still b/p:

Needs extra bump here, but not so much as to be an issue.
Avatar 10:42pm coelacanth∅:

levels fluctuating with each track, but mostly lower than usual.
Avatar 10:42pm Kris Holmes:

Oh, please play Chuck Willis “Kansas City Woman”
Avatar 10:42pm geezerette:

Hey, Dylan could actually sing then. And the crazy charisma!
I don't care about anything but the music.
Avatar 10:42pm coelacanth∅:

i want that edsel
Avatar 10:43pm coelacanth∅:

no i don't i want a coupe or sedan
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm Funky16Corners:

@Geezerette - The performance clips are aces. I love that period of Dylan. I could do without the cutesy-poo fake horseshit, though
Avatar 10:44pm coelacanth∅:

(the only ford i would drive)
Avatar 10:47pm Franco Twinkie:

On this night in 1976 we went to see the firework show in Capitola. On the way back to Santa Cruz the two lane road to the harbor was blocked by two giant bikers beating the shit out of each other right in front of our truck. When their bodies hit the street, you could feel ground shake.
Avatar 10:47pm Kris Holmes:

Love this Butterfield
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Funky16Corners:

It's a shame the Edsel didn't catch on. I always thought it was a nice looking car.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Funky16Corners:

@Kris - Me too, all time fave!
Avatar 10:47pm geezerette:

Yeah, those clips are all that matters. If you've seen any of "Renaldo and Clara" the clips Scorcese chose did Dylan a huge favor.
Avatar 10:48pm coelacanth∅:

looking at the map i see we do get to hawaii after all. i said "aloha" because i figured the chance was slim!
Avatar 10:49pm Kris Holmes:

The band is so tight & the solos just attack!!
Avatar 10:49pm geezerette:

Kris & Larry, likewise this Butterfield.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Funky16Corners:

Butterfield is ON FIRE
Avatar 10:50pm Kris Holmes:

Oh yeah, it’s the Memphis Train!!
Avatar 10:51pm geezerette:

Great single!
Avatar 10:52pm Kris Holmes:

Buddy Miles version is also great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm Funky16Corners:

Of Memphis Train?
Avatar 10:53pm Kris Holmes:

My favorite Bobbie Gentry track too
Avatar 10:53pm Kris Holmes:

Yes, on Mercury 45
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm Funky16Corners:

There's a great version of this by Billy Lee Riley
Avatar 10:54pm coelacanth∅:

that's funny Larry... i think the 2nd year (59) it looked pretty hot; but i wanted the '58 (as pictured<) because i thought it was ugly!
i considered buying one c.1991 when i was staying in plainfield,vt this guy was cruising around "for sale $3000." it sounded great it looked great but it wasn't the ugly one so i didn't buy it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm Funky16Corners:

I'll have to look for that Buddy Miles!
Avatar 10:54pm Kris Holmes:

Probably on an LP too
Avatar 10:55pm Franco Twinkie:

I like the one about bugs on this album.
Avatar 10:55pm Franco Twinkie:

Avatar 10:55pm Kris Holmes:

I’ll have to look for the Billy Lee Riley! On Crescendo or Mojo?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm Funky16Corners:

It has another soul cover on the flip
Avatar 10:56pm northguineahills:

On this day in 1976, I was 9 weeks old.
Avatar 10:56pm coelacanth∅:

(i have it on a Billy Lee Riley comp. i'm satisfied.)
Avatar 10:57pm northguineahills:

Not to be confused w/ the Chalaratans UK (Tim Burgess et al)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm Funky16Corners:

These are the San Fran pioneers
Avatar 10:58pm geezerette:

NGH, yourmemory goes back that far? Wow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm Funky16Corners:

BTW RIP Mike Wilhelm (in the last month or so)
Avatar 10:58pm Franco Twinkie:

Wow! NGH, you're just a baby.
Avatar 10:59pm Erica:

Older than me though (I was born in '91)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm chresti:

On this day in 1976, I went to the races @Hollywood Park, for the first time
Avatar 11:00pm northguineahills:

My first memory was when I was 11 months old, so, unfortunately, I only remember 1977 onwards.
Avatar 11:00pm Kris Holmes:

I just checked, the Billy Lee Riley is filed away in the other room already! Stoked :)
Avatar 11:01pm Franco Twinkie:

One day walking thru the Haight i looked up and saw the house they were standing on the porch in that iconic photo.
Avatar 11:01pm geezerette:

NGH, you are the youngest punk rocker!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm Funky16Corners:

On this day in 1976 I was 13 years and 9 months old-ish...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm Funky16Corners:

@Kris - I always like discoveries like that!
Avatar 11:02pm Kris Holmes:

On this day in 1976 I was not born
Avatar 11:02pm coelacanth∅:

on this day in 1976 i very likely got drunk and stoned with friends
Avatar 11:02pm geezerette:

Oh, now yer talkin'! Jelly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm chresti:

I got drunk and stoned after the races..
Avatar 11:04pm Kris Holmes:

Super impressed if this is off the original Gennett 78 right now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm Funky16Corners:

No. off of a Gennett boxed set
Avatar 11:05pm northguineahills:

@Erika; Wow, my wife was -6 years old in 1976, hopefully the future is bright (in a few years) for those of your generation. (I'm technically Gen X, and my wife is technically a millennial.)

chresti just gave me a good idea for my evening (minus going to the races).
Avatar 11:05pm geezerette:

Yeah, it sounded so good!
Avatar 11:05pm coelacanth∅:

ngh i remember being trained to use the little yellow potty, so - 1 year old? 2?... and i remember a dream i had when i was 3. what do you remember from 11 months old?
Avatar 11:06pm geezerette:

...never mind.
Avatar 11:08pm geezerette:

Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?
Avatar 11:08pm Kris Holmes:

Whenever I find Gennetts they are never the good ones
Avatar 11:08pm northguineahills:

@coel; I was potty trained at 8 mos., and could talk full phrases at 10 mos. (there's a tape of me talking at said age), but I couldn't walk until I was 15 mos (too many left feet), I did it all backwards (most kids walk, then get potty trained, then talk)>
Avatar 11:09pm Kris Holmes:

I remember seeing that clip, it was incredible
Avatar 11:10pm Franco Twinkie:

I love the forth of July and all the crazy shit that always happened these two days. On July 2nd 1967 an irate neighbor called the sheriff on me for blowing up shit in the street in front of her house. The first of many encounters with the law for making noise.
Avatar 11:10pm Erica:

Thank you for sharing that ngh.
Avatar 11:10pm coelacanth∅:

hmm, interesting ngh. i'll have to ask my mother for a timeframe.
Avatar 11:12pm coelacanth∅:

...oh but you still didn't say what your earliest memory is!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm chresti:

So, how can you be potty trained if you can't walk yet?
Avatar 11:13pm northguineahills:

@coel: as a historian, dates are tattooed into my brain. I can tell my parents events they don't even remember, w/ the exact date/time. Too bad such skills don't pay the bills... idiot savant I am, emphasis on idiot

@chresti: toddler portable toilet I could crawl to....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm Funky16Corners:

My earliest memory is fro maybe 2-ish, viewing fire truck coming to put out a fire in the apartment building across the street. I also have memories of the pediatrician my Mom took me to when we still lived in NY
Avatar 11:14pm Franco Twinkie:

That is a great scene! Bill Graham threatens to push his teeth down his throat. Wihelms other band was Loose Gravel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar 11:15pm Erica:

How can you even remember that ngh? I don't even remember my own infant hood, expect for one time when I went to preschool in a stroller.
Avatar 11:15pm Erica:

Aww I wanted the Glen Campbell version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm Funky16Corners:

I love this TJW version, too
Avatar 11:19pm still b/p:

If I could remember infancy, I could remember the pet monkey and the VW van my dad had. But I don't. I know they were real enough, but would be good to have personal experience/confirmation of those very unlikely and incongruous-for-dad features of the household.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm Funky16Corners:

I have some recently refreshed memories, thanks to my sister soliciting stuff for a memory book for my Dad's birthday
Avatar 11:21pm coelacanth∅:

i probably remember many scenes and events from infancy but i don't trust the matching of these things to particular ages.
i do know that my mother was/is a person of limited tolerance and less patience so i would've been geared for independence (pun intended) asap.
sometimes good parenting is inadvertent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm chresti:

Well, I remember crawling around with the cats and eating catfood from the cats' dish in the kitchen, don't know how old I was
Avatar 11:23pm still b/p:

Watching and feeding the neighbors' cat for holiday weekend. Maybe I'll try that, chresti.
Avatar 11:24pm Franco Twinkie:

Oh yes, yes, yes!
Avatar 11:24pm coelacanth∅:

Franco told me about that chresti. 2-3 years ago?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm Funky16Corners:

Most of my earliest memories are sense memories, sights, smells, voices etc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm chresti:

Haha, it's fun, still b/p
Avatar 11:25pm Erica:

Aww cats. Eww cat food.
Avatar 11:26pm coelacanth∅:

cat food isn't the only supremely gross thing about cats
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm chresti:

Haha coel, no cats anymore, Franco's allergic
Avatar 11:26pm northguineahills:

My first vivid memory was when I was asked what b-day cake I wanted for my second bday, I asked for a Pooh-Bear cake.

The first time I was big enough to use a big boy potty at age 3 (a normal toilet), I climbed on, and accidentally peed across the bathroom into the bathtub. since, none got on the floor, I walked out whistling dixiie.

My father was in medical school in the military, so I would rarely see him. My mother would take me weekly to the library, and I gravitated by age four to non-fiction, especially reference books. (hence the dork I am today). All I would do would read, or somehow try to nearly kill myself in woods/swamps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm Funky16Corners:

Aww, I love my kitties.
Avatar 11:27pm Franco Twinkie:

I have a photo I took in Omaha of a water tank that was turned into a giant coffee pot that says Sapp Bros.

very strong feelings. distracting and frustrating but kind of fun
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm Funky16Corners:

I remember how the soap smelled in my Nana's bathroom. I remember that my great aunt often smelled like scotch. I remember the sound of the time chime on WCBS-AM the all news station that my Dad listened to in the car when I was little.
  11:32pm Dean:

Everybody should read Joe Brainard's book I Remember.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm Funky16Corners:

Is that recent, Dean? I'll look for that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm chresti:

I remember the smell of squashed fireflies, in Illinois
  11:33pm Dean:

No. Brainard died long ago. But the book endures, and rightly so. It is precious, priceless, perfect...
  11:34pm Dean:

Avatar 11:37pm still b/p:

The smell of the tiny white summer flowers on the hedge around our yard and elsewhere in local neighbrohoods when I was growing up -- as an adult, when I walk or bike into that smell anywhere around here or on Cape Cod, it elicits almost a soft gasp and sigh of unusually deep potent nostalgia, a summer smile and compelling sad air at once.

I was referring to the track listing Carmichael. I'm in New Jersey. I will be going to be after the show.
  11:45pm Dean:

Yes, geezerette. That's it. I can't urge others strongly enough to read it. It is sublime.

I heard McKenzie's San Francisco on the radio this evening on the highway at dusk.

@Dean - I just ordered a copy.

sbp - I had a similar experience, driving down RT88 in Brick while listening to Springsteen singing about doing the same thing 47 years ago

smells permeate to the brain directly without passing through any process of analogy so they can trigger memories conscious and subconscious without the distraction of thought.

(i'm sure there's a more accurate way to phrase that available on the interwebs)

Somebody get me a cheeseburger!
  11:49pm rw:

Checking in. Looks like I missed out on some interesting conversation! But I have been enjoying the cross country tour. Thanks F16! Hey kids.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm Funky16Corners:

Hey rw!
  11:50pm Carmichael:

Sorry, Erica. I dove in late to the list.

I remember driving over a hill in San Francisco on a brilliant blue afternoon in 1967 and seen Alcatraz in the bay and hearing Blindman by Big Brother on the car radio. I thought in was called Show Me The Way for years until I got that first record. I still love that song.
  11:50pm Dean:

Bravo. You won't regret it. Brainard understood how to use small, ordinary words to produce strong effects. He also simply thought about the world clearly, plainly, without pretense. Ultimately, the book is poetry, rich in rhythm and sound. I adore it. I even wrote a paper in law school about it.

The Howard Cam special....He takes it!

Larry, great road trip! What am I going to do with all these souvenirs now?

Oh yeah! Joe also had a Nancy fixation.
  11:56pm Dean:

Yes, geezerette. I recently acquired a book about John Ashbery's collages, which I love. I so miss Ashbery. So prolific, so rarely disappointing.
