Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:42am Brian in UK:

But Stanley they were stil attached to them.
Avatar 9:44am ausmanx:

send some of that there rain over to these parts, thanks, brian
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:44am dutchtheo:

"Sallet" is an old English word that means "cooked greens", not to be mistaken for "salad"; in fact, a great many cases of pokeweed poisoning result from this linguistic mistake. While it may be that record companies labeled the song "salad", the dish in question was a "sallet" made of pokeweed.

  9:56am Listener Gregory:

It's amazing how it makes almost no difference what the music is that Hodges is playing... tacky pop song or Billy Strayhorn masterpiece. Either way you can't help being caught up in it.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:59am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:02am Brian in UK:

Doug, sounds like Running Dog singer but I think it is not so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Doug Schulkind:

From Wikipedia...

Tabor was inspired to sing by hearing Anne Briggs' EP Hazards of Love in 1965.

"I went and locked myself in the bathroom for a fortnight and drove my mother mad. I learned the songs on that EP note for note, twiddle for twiddle. That's how I started singing. If I hadn't heard her I'd have probably done something entirely different."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
Running Dog singer is...next.
Avatar 10:04am ausmanx:

i'm not sure kyrgios has a problem really, brian, any more than mcenroe or cantona did, i tend to think they're actually just human beings who crack under pressure sometimes. he pays the price - some experts think he'd be number one without this stuff.

Only Old Hoagy knows.

Old Mose knows too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Doug Schulkind:

Actually pulled a different track by Hoagy (himself singing) for a future show!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:48am Jeff Golick:

I don't think I've ever heard a version of "Old Folks" with the lyrics.
Avatar 10:48am ken krimstein:

Hoagy -- wow -- a fallen lawyer from Indiana, childhood pal of Bix, could he write 'em. And sing 'em. And what an actor! And wasn't Cole Porter also from that neck of the woods as a kid too? Looking forward to it.
  10:49am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff. There's the famous Charlie Parker plus voices version, which sounded very strange so wasn't released. However, Phil Schaap plays it five or six times at a go, so you get to know the lyrics if you catch that show.
Avatar 10:49am ken krimstein:

Used to sometimes see Mal at a wonderful (long gone) piano bar in the West Village called Bradleys.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:50am Brian in UK:

John Coltrane's take on Little Old Lady does it for me.
Avatar 10:50am ken krimstein:

Loving this piano set. The first one by Tete is a keeper. Which reminds me of another amazing pianist named Tete -- Tete Montoliu.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:51am Jeff Golick:

@LG: ah yes, that would do it. Wonder how Phil is doing these days...

Mal Waldron has such a unique sound and swing. It's kind of...upright?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Doug Schulkind:

I remember Bradley's well. An oral history of Bradley's in Jazz Times: jazztimes.com...
  10:52am Listener Gregory:

Old Folks lyrics written by Dedette Lee Hill, I am being told.
@Jeff, Schaap is now doing his Saturday show and sounds well there. Morning show is on repeats.
Avatar 10:53am ken krimstein:

Mal has such a powerful left hand. Such direct sound. I hope Phil is well. Regarding Bradley's -- Kenny Baron was always there. Every night of the week there was incredible music to be had. And Scotch. Thanks for there link.

I was at Bradley's once and heard Dave McKenna. That is a name you don't hear much any more. Wonderful pianist who somehow avoided modernism.

These fine artists are presenting you with the essential keys to the piano.

Wow, Friedman has a Maybeck Recital Hall issue! I only know his record on hat Art with Lee Konitz and Atilla Zoller.

Got my dancing ears on. All three of them. Wondered why the barbers charged me extra last week.
It was called Turkish barbers but the guy came from Bulgaria.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

Two years before his death, I presented this Don Friedman special: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Doug Schulkind:

Very Fela-esque on the sax there.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:31am Uncle Michael:

I hope you'll join Lucy and me for Hinky Dinky Time at the top of the hour.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:37am Brian in UK:

Guess this bed music track is dedicated to Mr Astake.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:38am chresti:

That must of been a sight to see, James Brown impersonators
  11:40am Alex In Illinois:

I've been listening from the start of the show, but been too busy to comment.

I sensed your presence, Alex. My nose hairs were all a-tingle.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Doug Schulkind:

No duos on Hinky Dinky Time. Uncle Michael likes to work alone! Stay tuned...

PLAYLIST: wfmu.org...
  11:54am Dean:

My favorite duo is either Bob & Carol or Ted & Alice...or Carol & Ted... Not sure.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:55am Brian in UK:

I've said it before and I'll say it again awopbopalubopalopbamboom. Notwithstanding that, great entertainment, Doug.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:55am Uncle Michael:

Lucy's running a little behind...but it's an adorable little behind. If she shows up, it's a double-act. I think I'm going to have a tough time competing with napping.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Doug Schulkind:

A duo of duos, Deano.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Doug Schulkind:

Gosh dang this has been fun. Thank you all so for hanging out with me!
  11:57am Dean:

You mean...a quartet?!
  11:57am Listener Gregory:

"Mel & Tim" is perhaps the least soulful soul duo name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am Doug Schulkind:

Mel & Tim's biggest hit? "Backfield in Motion"
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:58am dutchtheo:

Thanks, Doug! heaven notch
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:59am Uncle Michael:

See you all in the next room. Thanks, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Doug Schulkind:

Mel Hardin & Tim McPherson
  11:59am Listener Gregory:

Apparently, they sang "Backfield in Motion"! I knew that someone had to have sung it, but I had no idea who.
Once again, I have learned something from your show, Doug. And isn't that what's it's all about in the end?
  11:59am rw:

Thank you Mr. Schulkind for hosting! Did I mention you're a madman? Unbelievable. Thank you thank you!!
