Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

A long time ago, I was home watching TV and my sister came home and said she just saw Crabby Appleton playing in the gym at Cal State Fullerton for two dollars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Uncle Michael:

  12:13pm Dean:

I saw The Tubes in that gym, Franco. A mild riot ensued, due to the "festival" seating arrangement.

Well, on that night, Little Feat opened for Crabby Appleton. My sister and her friend Kathy decided to show their appreciation by pelting the band with mini donuts.

Avatar 1:21pm Roberto:

I don't entirely blame them. My daughter has never been a fan of authority, to put it lightly. Then again, you'd think an arts camp would foster and promote that kind of dissent.

Catalog no. is B6025, which puts it in 1931, as here: https://www.discogs.com/label/37150-His-Masters-Voice?sort=year&limit=500&genre=All&page=4
Avatar 1:31pm Roberto:

I didn't know the story behind Waterloo Sunset until I heard that Celebrity Tracheotomies story. It's really quite moving.

Uncle, Dude!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Uncle Michael:

I guess I don't know the story, Roberto.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar 1:43pm Roberto:

Oh yeah so Ray Davies apparently had a near-death experience as a teen and required an emergency tracheotomy and an extended stay in hospital. While recovering, he would watch people milling about below from the hospital balcony. That was the inspiration for Waterloo Sunset.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Uncle Michael:

That's very different from anything I've ever heard about that song.
Avatar 1:49pm Roberto:

Hmm well listen to the song Celebrity Tracheotomies, I'm pretty sure that's as accurate an account as any :)
Avatar 1:50pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Heard Ray originally wrote 'Liverpool' - then thot - bugger, I'm from London...
Avatar 1:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Terry & Julie' is that movie...
Avatar 1:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Wigkey: en.wikipedia.org...
  1:55pm dan:

It was a rumor that the "Terry and Julie" mentioned were Terrence Stamp and Julie Christie, who were an item back them. That turned out to be a coincidence.
Avatar 1:55pm Roberto:

Evidently the hospital stay was but one of many inspirations for the song.
Avatar 1:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Ray of course in the topdrawer of Writers - & not too much like TheBeatles or Dylan. Altho' 'Waterloo' is a bit Beatley. Has been suggested '19th Nervous Breakdown' is Kinky, otoh - a good point I think...
  1:57pm dan:

Out of all the singer/songwriters of the British Invasion, Ray Davies is in a world of his own.
Avatar 2:00pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

If Townshend is key to PowerPop (his term in fact) - I say Ray is to 'SmartPop'. Any Smiths w/out Ray?...

Schoolboys in Disgrace is The Kinks' unsung masterpiece.

...well - we ironically fortunate they were banned from the U.S. in the 'invasion' - that's for sure...
