A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Avatar 9:31am still b/p:

Can we create a large social shift and revision so that "In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes," instead becomes "..except death and vanilla?"
I'm thinking ice cream relevance, personally.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Planet Tyler:

@Beast - nice cam
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am melinda:

@Trouble haha! It's small, made from a fine synthetic fiber of some sort. Found it going through my dad's stuff after he died, and it seemed quite mysterious since he didn't wear macrame necklaces but my mom recognized it as something they probably picked up at a craft fair in the 70s.
Avatar 9:49am still b/p:

melinda, I saw a barred owl sitting on top of a car on a mild winter night a few months ago, in Ferry Village neighborhood of South Portland. Was great and so unexpected.

Where was that nest, perhaps osprey -- though I'm sure it's happened more than once -- where parents rejected chick and got quite brutal with it and plenty of upset people watching webcam pressed wildlife people to intervene. They did not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am @sugarwolf@:

I had a couple of 70s style owl necklaces but they are metal/enamel no macrame

Have you seen Picasso's pizza owl???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Trouble:

owl moon by jane yolen is the most fabulous childrne's book about an owl. gorgeous story and beautifully drawn
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Phillippe Bastille:

@still b/p Those osprey can be mean suckers! We just moved this week to a little cove not far off the Chesapeake. One of our neighbors told us that there's a bald eagle hanging out nearby that gets run off by the osprey when they return to nest. Who messes with an eagle? Saw an osprey go after a heron a couple days ago as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Passaic River Blues:

Sidenote: Newark Mayor Kenneth Gibson declared June 15th to be "James Mtume Day" in 1983. Mark your calendars.
Avatar 10:01am still b/p:

Plenty of osprey to be seen and heard around here by ocean and inland, but haven't seen bad-ass (bad-oss?) belligerence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Phillippe Bastille:

Its cool watching them flap around with a fish in their claws...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Trouble:

thanks!!! fantastic to know @passaicriverblues merci!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Passaic River Blues:

I'm not really into fantasy but I'm currently reading the first Gormenghast novel by Mervyn Peake because Marlon James has spoken so highly of it. In a recent interview with Long Reads, James discussed how the Gormenghast series was an inspiration of his soon-to-be published "Black Leopard, Red Wolf," saying "the fantasy novel that continues to rule my life is Gormenghast. It was a blueprint for how the fantastical grows up."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am sphere:

Mervyn Peake has an amazing prose style but man his plots crawl so sloooowly. BTW, Black Leopard Red Wolf is out now and it is really good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Z-pulpa:

Wow anyone else looking at this red tailed hawk at Cornell?
Avatar 10:18am Buddha of Suburbia:

Avatar 10:19am Buddha of Suburbia:

Aaron in Newark! Salut! Are you really going to Portugal tomorrow?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Trouble:

@PRB: i am reading marlon james right now because of his interviews! i knew the book was going to brutally violent( not my thing), but his interviews were outstanding and always so free form in how he looks at the world, i said i have to try to read this book

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Barney Grubbs:

Part way through Black Leopard, Red Wolf (found it in paperback on a trip to south africa)--it is enjoyable and a great take on the fantastic adventure tale, but maybe even more brutal than 7 Killings (though hard to compare fantasy fantasy directly to historically grounded fantasy)
  10:36am prudy:

btw, painting on today's comments board recalls for me maps of the five boroughs.

@sphere we will definitely give that a try! We've gone to Mike's for years as my wife's company dinner, but nowhere else since we lived in Crownsville back in the 90s. And no problem on the spelling -- its a made-up name and I spelled it wrong when I made it up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Trouble:

@brian: my son didn't buy a t shirt at any of his colleges. some kids love to buy one at every college they visit...luckily the college of his choice had handed out t shirts on his tour, so he was prepared for college t shirt day.

@beata: that is a mighty high compliment , even if it's a question. i'll take it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am sphere:

@Phillippe - Edgewater's prices have gone up but I suggest what we always do--only order one crabcake. It's much cheaper and last time I checked the crabcake is the size of your fist.
Avatar 11:29am beata:

Take it @Trouble!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Z-pulpa:

oooh I should eat some good crab before I leave Maryland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Phillippe Bastille:

Will do. I'm on that 16/8 interval diet, so smaller meals now seem to be the norm. Thanks for the advice! Do you ever go to Cantler's? Its been recommended but I hear it ain't cheap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Phillippe Bastille:

@Zpulpa If you have access to transportation that can take you just a little ways out of the city, try G&M, in Linthicum near the airport. Maybe a little overhyped, but we were never disappointed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Cool Runnings:

Olé y Bien hecho. Adios!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am sphere:

I have been to Cantler's a few years ago and I enjoyed it. But that sounds about right. BTW, the state has a list of restaurants who are supposedly certified to use Maryland blue crab in most of their cooking:

Avatar 11:39am Jeff Moore:

G&M is a reliably good place for tasty crab cakes with giant chunks of crab meat in 'em.
