frank - how was the road?? i had good journeys
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Year-End Fundraiser 2020 Swag For Life Member 11:05am Frank In Queens:

hi clarke! The tour was mostly amazing; probably the best one yet. There were also some colossally dumb moments, but that's the way it goes.
  11:05am clarke:

i got back a few weeks ago - but then MS was away
  11:06am clarke:

touring is ALL ABOUT dumb moments!
  11:10am clarke:

for instance: anyone wishing to avoid a cluster-f**k of traffic snarl and tourist trap bs should avoid the corridor in the smoky mtns between Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, TN - ouch!!!
  11:11am clarke:

and all the way to knoxville for that matter!

Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Year-End Fundraiser 2020 Swag For Life Member 11:17am Frank In Queens:

The dumb moments on my tour had more to do with the personalities involved than it did with logistics. We were fine in that regard.
  11:19am clarke:

i don't doubt that, frank. i was touring by my lonesome = hard to blame on anyone else!!
Avatar 11:22am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

i should refine that to EAST TN

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Sid:

Not to knock the pursuit of the perfect plantain, but the classic banana requires only timing to ripeness and peeling. Plantains require inordinate work to convert them to something more tasty than wallboard!
  11:26am clarke:

there IS something to be said for SIMPLICITY!!

I only knew Frank from his fill ins for Bob on Saturday mornings, but I thought he was the perfect choice for that time slot. Sad that he's gone.
Avatar 11:44am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

OK. He did have a stroke.
He made it work - even as a unique way of phrasing - which I think must have been his manner w/ words anyhow.
He's was on early on Mondays when I got really into his program - an important buffer in the week.
I loved his apparently post-psychedelic idealism - along w/ his both topical & surrealist - & @ the same time understated! - views & ways of speaking. Very wry & yet welcoming, yes! It meant a lot to me.
  11:45am Peanut Gallery:

I got on a Dear Madam Barnum kick this past week. This is my 9th or 10th listen to this lately. Thanks Michael and Frank. RIP.

  12:05pm Dennis Diken:

Frank O’toole and Bob Brainen did an annual Brian Wilson trib show (I think around BW’s birthday in June) in the late 70s which really drew me to WFMU tho I’d been tuning in since 1968. Frank championed a young Smithereens, citing our 1983 Beauty & Sadness among his fave records of that year. He was very supportive when I became a WFMU staffer in ‘96. He was a good friend and a good guy and I’m gonna miss him.
  12:07pm clarke:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Listener Baby:

Hitting the road Baby. See you app-side.
  12:08pm Ross T:

Ah Frank O'Toole...didn't know the whole story but he was one of the WFMU DJs (along with Bob and of course Michael and a few others) that I always knew I was in for a good ride with. Same with Gary Stewart -- shared a name with my all time favorite brilliant country artist so his name on all those amazing rhino comps always jumped out at me. Come to think of it I won the wonderful 70s/80s/90s power pop comp on Michael's show by knowing who coined the term!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Melissa Jean:

Avatar 12:09pm Michael Shelley:

About 25 years ago I was listening to Frank’s show and he played something I had never heard and really liked. I called the station and Frank answered the phone. I asked what the groovy music was he had just played and he said it was a band called Pavement. He was one hep cat.
  12:11pm clarke:

speaking of Cactus Blossoms - i did a color print of that photo MS took in the jersey studio - it came out GREAT!! very good shot!! gotta find a good frame

Gary Stewart was a class act, he did a lot of nice things for a lot of people and his community. Another rare soul who was very supportive to me. Just saw him in February. Damn.

  12:14pm clarke:

Avatar 12:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Just read Keef's autobio 'Life'. Interesting what he says about his relation w/ Mick. 'Always wants to do the Dance stuff he just heard in the club'...
  12:16pm clarke:

it was a bad confluence of compression that was popular with chris kimsey and took over in a different way in the 80's
  12:16pm Baby:

Super tight aluminum snare
  12:17pm johnk77:

another great show selecter:>
anyone going to plimsouls
at hanks saloon brooklyn tonight?
my guess on the stone's snare sound:
might be overdriven
at the mic pre?
Avatar 12:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

You'd think CharlieWatts would have major agency...
  12:17pm Baby:

Most likely
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Year-End Fundraiser 2020 Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Frank In Queens:

I would be going to Hank's if I didn't have a prior obligation. Be sure to get there in time for McKinley James! He's not to be missed!
  12:19pm clarke:

you can get the same sound with any compressor - just squash the shit out of two mics on each side of snare - top and bottom
  12:19pm 1whoknewcthulhu:

Michael--to make the snare shots sound loud like you hear Charlie Watts do on the Stones' "Neighbours," the drummer hits the share head and rim with the stick at the same time.
  12:19pm egould310:

Not going to Cactus Blossoms. But I am going to see Rolling Blackouts CF on June 10 at the Lodge Room.
  12:21pm johnk77:

thanks @frankiq
have not heard of mr. james
planning to make it
for support
supposedly starting 9pm
  12:21pm clarke:

charlie watts hits rim shots most of the time, ever since he changed his drumming style - right about the time of Some Girls (he skips the downbeat with his hi-hat hand)
the drum sound on Neighbors - which was an outtake of Some Girls is just super-compressed
  12:24pm paul:

George Thorogood did a great version of this CB tune.

Ken Hyde Park...promise not to drop in univited nor plant any plants in your premise ... I used to look at the Buffalo (Mozzerella from Amenia???) and swim round about Germantown.... If the PCBs do not kill you they make you stronger!!! As X-Ray would say.. when there is no Taylor Ham, enjoy a lead paint sandwich...

FXO was the Master @Segues or "Mash-Ups" and for me, the greatest segue mix he ever did was on Jan. 3, 2003 when he mashed Brian Protheroe's "Enjoy It" with Primal Scream's "Morning Sun," then he went BACK to "Enjoy It" to tie the two songs together in a sandwich. It was an amazing combination of two fantastic songs so check it out here:
My favorite mash-up/segue of FXO. I mean, it's amazing how he went from one song to the other then back to the original without ever missing a beat and keeping the lyrics all in line with each other. Definitely you should check it out sometime, but not now 'cause Michael is doing an especially good show today.
