FYI: Discogs gives 1981 as the year this tape came out -- but I think that's wrong.

Tony Coulter:

I'm guessing many of you will recognize what's under today's tapes!?! (Not the specific record, but the generic design, used for many different releases.)
Avatar 12:22pm
Tony Coulter:

As you can hear, I wasn't kidding about the lo fi–ness of (much of) this tape.

Rich in Washington:

Is it a Peel Sessions record?
Avatar 12:27pm
Tony Coulter:

Yep! It's the Syd Barrett one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm
Rich in Washington:

I love that whenever a John Peel session would play on an iPod on my car's stereo, it would be truncated as John Pee on the LED readout.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm
Rich in Washington:

was just listening to a radio program about Syd yesterday at work.

What's the point in clicky starring these wonderful recordings when i'll never find them again? Tape Hiss teaches us to enjoy the moment.

Rich in Washington:

Tape Hiss is fleeting. Enjoy it while it's on. It's like listening to a tape which is being hopelessly snarled outside of its shell while you're listening to it.
  1:07pm
Martinibomb:

Hi Rich
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm
Rich in Washington:

I have this perhaps false memory of the music industry trying out a tape technology wherein the consumer would buy a tape that they could only listen to once; I would self destruct upon playing - like Mission Impossible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm
Rich in Washington:

I DO know that they tried to do something like that with CDs and DVDs fairly recently. That's google-able.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm
Rich in Washington:

Hi Martinibomb! How's things?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm
Michael 98145:

@Rich, well we WERE supposed to believe at one time the cassette tape was going to end Western Civilization. Such as it is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm
Michael 98145:

These Tape Hiss shows are evanescent -- like the cherry blossoms of hanami.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm
Rich in Washington:

Michael 98145: for a few moments in the 80s, I dreamt the end of Western Civilization would really end. Sadly, we all toil on... A Nike shoe stamping on a human face for all eternity.
Avatar 1:18pm
Tony Coulter:

Ahoy there, Michael 98145!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm
Michael 98145:

Remember when we all thought the 21st century was gonna be something better?

Heh.
  1:21pm
Martinibomb:

are there any books/movies about civilization ending and whadya know its not so bad?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm
Michael 98145:

... except if we have to listen to WFMU on coal-powered consoles ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm
Rich in Washington:

Martinibomb: I think there a lot of post-civ fiction books out there. I don't know any, but I am sure they exist. There's a whole community of people who live this back-to-the-earth thing that are sort of betting on modern civilization just collapsing, but without all the turmoil that modern preppers are prepping for - just a sort of John Zerzan-inspired fantasy of a Post-Industrial world of gardening, living in mud dwellings, etc.
