Options April 2, 2019: Andre Previn RIP
The RIPs keep coming. Morricone Island pays belated tribute to jazz and classical pianist, conductor and composer Andre Previn who died in Manhattan on February 28th at 89. Previn started his career in LA in 1946 as an arranger, conductor and composer for MGM while still in high school, eventually composing over 50 films before turning his nose to the world of film scoring after 1975's "Rollerball." However, his work on "Valley of the Dolls" never allowed him to shake his Hollywood past.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm dale:

they always will. as long as we turn around the sun.
  7:02pm prudy:

yeah, great!
Avatar 7:02pm Linda Lee:

there's a voice i heard throughout my childhood. still astounding.
Avatar 7:03pm Linda Lee:

that little catch, when she lets it happen, just breaks your heart.
Avatar 7:04pm Jeff Moore:

Oh, it's Previn Day!

Hey, Devon.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:04pm ultradamno:

My favorite addiction cautionary tale of the sixties.
Avatar 7:04pm slugluv1313:

agreed, Linda Lee -- loved this song ever since i was a little kid (and way too young to *understand* what Valley of the Dolls was all about)
Avatar 7:04pm Linda Lee:

oh gosh, me too. but the song! :-)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:05pm ultradamno:

And definitely the best movie about macing people on rollerskates.
  7:05pm prudy:

diggin this!
Avatar 7:06pm Linda Lee:

golly, they filmed 'the subterraneans'?
Avatar 7:06pm Linda Lee:

i see they took a few liberties with the love interest..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm dale:

there's a scene in rollerball where some people at a cocktail party go outside to blow stuff up with bazooka type armaments and they're all laughing and having a blast. it was telling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@ least the tune's good...
Only Literates can separate Beat from Beatnik...
Avatar 7:09pm Linda Lee:

i can get behind Peppard as Leo Percepied, i guess!
  7:09pm prudy:

Anne Margaret???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm dale:

ann margret - the original kitten with a whip!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& that's just her voice...
Avatar 7:11pm Linda Lee:

that 'yeah' made it.
  7:12pm prudy:

anyone ever seen the film with Taylor and Burton. (late in careers) sort of ...Now I remember... called BOOM!
  7:12pm prudy:

didn't know about Previn...Oy!
Avatar 7:13pm Linda Lee:

i think i'll just go ahead & see all the films i was "too young" for in the 60s & early 70s :-)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:17pm melinda:

I would like to see Bill Bixby as a tattooed French sailor.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:17pm ultradamno:

Wilder and Maclaine were a good team. You can't beat The Apartment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Seems everybody quite liked the man Andre Previn as well as the music.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:20pm melinda:

@Linda my sister and I did that with Altered States and Times Square a few years ago, it was fun. Both seemed kind of ridiculous, in different ways, but Times Square was more fun.
Avatar 7:21pm Linda Lee:

i'll bet! if they're dated, they just seem silly.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:22pm ultradamno:

Damn, Dog! I saw that in the theater.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:25pm melinda:

@Linda both films have interesting backstories about conflicting visions and demands between screenwriters/directors/producers, and you can see it in the end results.
Avatar 7:26pm Jeff Moore:

I've seen far too few of these – although I've gotten exposed to the music more than the films somehow.
Avatar 7:26pm Linda Lee:

  7:27pm prudy:

God, now I feel like I'm listening to Lawrence Welk!
Avatar 7:27pm Linda Lee:

@Jeff Moore ~ that makes sense, if we're fmu listeners.
Avatar 7:29pm Linda Lee:

i'm still waiting for a great easy-listening radio show.
Dory Previn had a singing career too!
  7:31pm Keith from Oregon:

@Linda Lee: Have you listened to Sheila B's show? It's not all easy listening, but a good proportion is...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:32pm melinda:

I'd like an easy-listening show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Explorer's Room' often features Lounge & Exotica. Distinct of course...
Avatar 7:33pm Linda Lee:

i have! that's definitely pop. great show ~ but i'm talkin' henry mancini & the lemon pipers!
Avatar 7:35pm Linda Lee:

or rather, the lennon sisters. i get my lennons confused with lemons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...if life gives you lemons...somethingsomething joke...
  7:38pm prudy:

just saw BDBR recently for first time. Early acknowledgement re racism in US
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm dale:

hot damn this is big.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

So...this Previn fella - a bit of range did he...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:41pm melinda:

@prudy interesting, isn't it? When I worked at a public library years ago it was one of the videos that was hardly ever checked out, so I checked it out.
Avatar 7:44pm Linda Lee:

melinda, i love the idea of working at a library & checking out obscurities. i'd call it a dream job.
  7:45pm Johnzon:

You're an honorary night according to me dj... if you're a more than decent person you can call anyone sir you feel like. I call my boss Sir. Sir Mark, Lord of Ace Hardware
  7:45pm Johnzon:

  7:46pm prudy:

Melinda, and interesting it also featured a veteran missing an arm.
  7:49pm prudy:

Love Wood in Daisy Clover. She is so genuine in a lot of ways. And I don't mean the person Natalie Wood.
  7:50pm prudy:

Ah, and ending in a cocktail lounge....
  7:52pm Boods:

good evening folks
  7:54pm Johnzon:

BOOD evening to you too!!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:57pm joe mulligan:

that does sound like Gerry Mulligan in the bad guys track!
  7:58pm Boods:

hi and bye bye Johnzon...
Avatar 8:04pm slugluv1313:

yes! i want to go back and watch all those "forbidden" films from my childhood too!
@ Linda Lee -- right? re: Theme from The Valley of The Dolls -- still remains soooooo evocative of feeling lost, lonesome, etc. . . . when i finally saw the film, it was just so PERFECT for the story . . . (my Mom had the book too! but, i was not "allowed" to read that either until i was "older," hah! gotta dig that out too and read it again :) )
Avatar 8:17pm Linda Lee:

i hear you slugluv!
Avatar 8:17pm Linda Lee:

there's an idea for a film festival :-D
Avatar 8:52pm slugluv1313:

@ Linda Lee -- YES! "Forbidden Films of Our Childhood" :)
