Hi Granny Spicy Tuna! Yes! It's awesome to see you here as well. I have the day off. I have a cold, so, I'm just chillaxing.
  3:39pm Jocelyn:

It's sad. I've been feeling that lack of community the last few years. I noticed a weird shift happening at work and blamed it on generational differences but I'm finding it's much deeper than that, happening everywhere.

Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:43pm The Oscar:

Totally agree on community-- I'm lucky enough to have a writing gig as part of a local arts collective, and it's so amazing to have a place in such a warm and supportive community (and a creative outlet to boot!). The good news is I'm pretty sure there are communities like this everywhere-- you just need to know where to look :)
  3:44pm John from Florham Park:

@buddha your boyfriend sounds like a great guy
  3:45pm Jocelyn:

There's also a general lack of helpfulness. Almost like everyone's out for themselves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm zpulpa:

Music has always brought me community more than most things!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

Jocelyn, as much as i adore this virtual clubhouse, i suspect that online socializing is hindering our ability (as a society) to interact graciously in person. WFMU has many opportunities for folx to gather in person, and i think that's one reason why the WFMU family feels more stable than other online communities (even for those of us in far-flung places).

I try to balance my online interactions with local, in-person gatherings. Small is good, simple is good. But keep on showing up is the best.
  3:45pm John from Florham Park:

@jocelyn I am at a complete loss to what it is and Facebook is part of it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm Phillippe Bastille:

@Jocelyn Truly depends on the people and where you are. Lived in the house we are fixing up to move from for almost 20 years and know the names of only 3 of our neighbors, and have only been invited into two of their homes. Different story where we are moving to. Met all the neighbors and one has already traded keys to our front doors for emergency dog-walking.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Cmurtha:

This ties back to Bowling Alone, and a few other works that started popping up around the 80s onward. About how the failure of democratic institutions in America, and the crisis of America culture/community stemming from the to the revanchism of the late 70s and80s/the loss of regulations, and a new emphasis on the individual which justified these larger power grabs). Its strange we now live in "American Psycho"esque world. I think people my age and younger try to form these bonds and suceed, but there's just so much external preasure, I worry more about the kids born after my brother, who seem genuinely afraid of admitting to having feelings, or afraid of the damage to their image/themselves those kinds of relationships may entail. Though that last one is just personal observation, not sure if its actually BACKED by anything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

zpulpa, yay! so cool. Any particular spots you're hoping to explore?
Avatar 3:48pm djsheilab:

Thanks for all your wonderful thoughts on this community/ social isolation issue!
  3:48pm John from Florham Park:

@phillioe where I live the neighbors all know each other and watch out for each other, where I used to live in Florida no matter how hard I tried I could not get to know my neighbors at all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Very happy that you located your bag, Sheila.Although your bag's whereabouts were inconclusive when I left, it was impressive to see FMU folk in search mode. Saved by the Nazario Scenario!
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Cmurtha:

I will have to check out the documentary, but I do hope that Gupta ties this to the ultimate failure of the Civil Rights movement, and the blow back stemming from Stagflation, and the unrest of the 70s leading to the sanitized culture of control we find ourselves in now
  3:49pm John from Florham Park:

@djsheliab I hate getting this serious on Friday afternoons while listening to your always great show but you got us talking about it
  3:49pm Jocelyn:

I see all these workplace changes, attitudes, and it's weird. Also weird that I blinked and suddenly I'm the one with seniority. Where did the last 20 years ago?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm zpulpa:

@Granny Spicy Tuna, I will be just outside of Portland OR in Happy Valley working on an art project for June, then ill be in Portland most the time but really want to visit Washington, I have a friend in Olympia I want to see, im not sure other than that. I think ill be around the area until fall.
  3:50pm Luna Nueva:

Hi Sheila, it's true that Hispanics are not as stressed out as Americans. I lived in Puerto Rico for ten years and I lived in the Dominican Republic for three years. My American friends referred to the experience as culture shock. We can learn a lot from each other.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

Bookstores have been a place for nurturing local community, and that's why it's a tragedy so many are closing. On Lopez Island, we have few public places where strangers are likely to interact socially for free, so the library has become one of the most important spots for such community building. We also have a free store which is always a fun place.
Avatar 3:51pm Buddha of Suburbia:

Hi DJSheilab! LOVE Your SHOW!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

zpulpa: i will be in portland in mid-June. If you want to try out that weird "in-person socializing" thing, we could meet up somewhere. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Phillippe Bastille:

Its curious to see how that looking out for each other thing eveloves as neighborhoods turn over. My 89 yr old mom lives in a 50s-era development that has a lot of starter homes for new families. She doesn't have to worry about finding someone to clear her walk when it snows or mowing her tiny lawn. Neighbors step up and it just happens.
  3:53pm P-90:

Truth is I’ve been curious to see what “One Nation Under Stress” has to say, but I’ve been too busy/stressed out to make time to watch it yet...
  3:53pm Jocelyn:

Hi Buddha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Passaic River Blues:

More or less on point and tacking on to CMurtha here: I am currently reading a book by Jonathan Metzl called “Dying of Whiteness: How the Politics of Racial Resentment Is Killing America's Heartland.” It concerns not only how far-right policies undermine the physical health of everyone including white Americans who endorse those policies, but also lead to the fraying of a larger sense of community and a variety of negative psycho-social effects. Instability and zero-sum politics breeds mistrust breeds despair.
  3:54pm Rick G:

@zpulpa: Olympia has a great record store: Rainy Day. It’s been around since the 1970’s. The Hood Canal area is an easy drive from Olympia and well worth it.
  3:54pm Jocelyn:

Yes :( Too many bookstores closing or already closed. So many great places are closing or already gone. That's been one of my social problems the last decade. New York has lost so many places I'd gather.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm zpulpa:

@Granny Spicy Tuna, that would be awesome! I am really looking forward to that time. we will be in touch!
  3:55pm John from Florham Park:

Jocelyn I have no idea, it’s a damn shame though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

P-90 i'm laughing til i cry here! Oy.

When i moved into my house in SF 22 years ago, i quickly got to know all of my neighbors, who had been in the neighborhood for a long time. Then real estate boomed and everyone sold their houses and the folx who moved in showed no interest in getting to know their neighbors. Wah. :(
Avatar 3:56pm djsheilab:

Agreed on the bookstores. And to think that Amazon has dared to open their own stores makes my blood boil!
  3:56pm John from Florham Park:

@GST it is known as house flipping and that really screws up a neighborhood

all i gotta say was this grupa guy left me the impression of another big insurance co. /big pharma co. backyard Doc-Dog. he's playing good guy now for his image restoration? or he's gonna pull more pills for concerned community citizens?
  3:59pm John from Florham Park:

@djsheliab I for one would refuse to go to an amazon store give me a book store anyway where I can drink some coffee and do a little reading
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Passaic River Blues:

That was sweet and denatured at the same time.

  4:00pm JasonInBoston:

Right on John! and don't forget the bookstore cat / dog!
  4:00pm Jocelyn:

Granny, I understand that! My old Bowery apartment building was awesome, I knew everyone. Then gentrification slowly creeped in, models started invading the neighborhood then everyone sold out, the new neighbors had no interest in meeting.
  4:00pm John from Florham Park:

@mzzzm we are medicated as it is
  4:00pm Jocelyn:

Amazon. Ugh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

John from Florham Park: house flipping has certainly had a huge impact on SF.

I am happy to report that our neighborhood has a group trying to preserve the things we love (partly by challenging huge development projects) and that my home will be the gathering place for an evening of informational presentations and hanging out IN PERSON.
  4:01pm John from Florham Park:

@JIB I really love going to independent or small chain book stores where I can look around and not get hustled
  4:01pm mzzzzm:

@granny that's cool! I should go to more dance/theater performances.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Phillippe Bastille:

@Granny is The Tumbleweed Cafe on Van Ness still there? That place saved my per diem every trip
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:06pm tneeld:

Ah - what did I miss? Oh - community! I've been thinking a lot about isolation in America - mainly because of the contrast with Istanbul, which is a place where I've almost immediately made fast friends. Plus they have a strong culture of common space sharing and hanging out. I've been in my city in the U.S. for 4 years and I have many more friends in Istanbul.

@tneeld It is a very interesting contrast, its a shame because of the work I am doing here I don't get to enjoy that aspect of Turkish culture as often as I should.

Phillippe Bastille: i think that is long gone. I never went there, sounds like i missed something good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm zpulpa:

I think talking about these things is really important and helps collectively brain storm what we are feeling about this strange culture we are both a part of and a part from. It is nice to hear all of your perspectives.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:11pm tneeld:

@Cmurtha Ahh - I can imagine actually living in Istanbul might be different. On this last trip I fell in with some artistic folks on the Asian side (we listened to old SBB shows which was just about perfect), so I had lots of 5 AM conversations and generalized collegiate-ness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Phillippe Bastille:

@Granny They had this really hearty chili for like $5 that could fill you up. There was a cooking school upstairs and I think a lot of their practice dishes would make their way down. And it was a walk, albeit a long one, from the St. Francis, where our client put us up.

@Tneeld, I just happen to be doing research so I don't run into folks often as I am either in the apt. or a library. But, the friendliness/community is there! Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Cmurtha:

@tneeld its closer to Azeri in that it retains lots of persian words/they speak russian/sprinkle russian into their speaking. As far as I know its similar enough that you can get by/understand a lot of what they say and the grammar/some other things are basically the same, but its more removed from Turkish then Azeri is/the pronunciation is different enough for the same words to cause confusion. I don't think it has vowel harmony. The only thing I remember for certain about it is that onlar = siz in uzbek

Not to be tooo effusive but this We Joe song is immediately great! I have to hunt it down. Thanks for turning us on today Sheila!

Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:58pm tneeld:

@Cmurtha - I only went for a few days during my Turkey trip. I landed in Baku and then pretty immediately (after wandering around the old city a bit and going through a medieval torture exhibit that felt like it was put together by local goth-y art students) took a bus to Quba and then a taxi up to Khinaliq. Pretty interesting place - the language they speak there has no relation to any nearby language - I think they're ethnically Albanian or something? Baku was nice, albeit famously windy.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Carmichael:

Oh BTW Sheila, I was just thinking about the (few) female vocal leads on APP albums. Don't Hold Back by Clare Tory (the same woman who moans through Dark Side of the Moon) would be a good candidate for your show sometime. Just the junior producer in me ...
