"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

hi john wow your premium looks amazing i'm tempted to get it even though i don't have a record player probably a collector's item right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am VincentNifigance:

Don't want to deprive myself, but I think The Pidge deserves a Claycation next week.
Avatar 9:10am John Allen:

steveo, collectors item indeed
  9:10am John from Florham Park:

@vincent I think all the DJs need to take off next week to recover from this

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am VincentNifigance:

@JohnFromFlorhamPark But Clay especially, I mean he's on every weekday, was on yesterday with Fabio, this morning's big finale, now another three hours on top of that?! Most DJs do what, one additional show on top of their own?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Howdy, all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am steveo:

clay is a powerhouse i don't know how he even does his own show every day
  9:15am John from Florham Park:

@vincent very true, have a feeling it will be a crazy weekend at the station
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am VincentNifigance:

I'm sure Kirsten is glad that WFMU gets a lot of the energy out of him so he isn't climbing the walls at home! As a father I know the feeling!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Granny Spicy Tuna:

The Pidge is a phenomenon. WFMU has an almost obscene amount of devoted programmers who put together world class masterpieces every week. And all volunteer. It's mindboggling.

At the risk of contradicting myself and piling more work on him, I think Clay deserves his own show more in line with the Dusty aesthetic, he does so much I think it's unfortunate he's limited in his ability to play the music he really wants to play. Yes, I know that might mean Slipknot, Phil Collins and Starcastle, but are we not Freeform?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am TomDash:

killer buffer zone of a set!

have y'all heard the live Sabbath from Asbury Park early 70s maybe 75? it really opened my eyes to what their live show was really like. loud and amazing.

love the show guys. I'm liking the double dj.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Ike:

@vincent, free-form doesn't mean just anybody is allowed on the air to play whatever they want. My terrible college radio station was like that. It was wretched. A station like WFMU can only exist if somebody is carefully curating and gatekeeping who can get in, and keeping OUT the people who just play Phil Collins and Slipknot. Just my opinion!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Luna Nueva:

Morning John Allen, love the premium intro music --- Swag for life for JA In The AM !

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am melinda:

@Ike what you described is freeform, just a crappy variety of it.
Avatar 9:38am đ¢ ÞäŦ:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am steveo:

i admire your mutual respect for differing F capitalization
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am VincentNifigance:

I get what you're saying, but has he not earned the right to be as crappy an interpretation of freeform as he likes?! Some people would say playing Don Felder ever week is a crappy interpretation of freeform...in fact they do, quite vociferously!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am VincentNifigance:

@TDK60 Last night Fabio said he would be tuning in for Wake & Bake...I think that was his unique way of being ecstatic...and lying!
Avatar 9:45am Linda Lee:

Avatar 9:53am dk50b:

Think South Orange's Don Kirschner formed The Archies as a totally controllable fake band to avoid a repeat of The Monkees rebellion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am melinda:

@Clay so true about reframing. Maybe someone out there has experienced a positive reframing of Phil Collins thanks to FMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am melinda:

I still have my Archie fan club membership card.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am VincentNifigance:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am steveo:

that's the first time i can recall hearing them also, Linda -- not that i would have recognized the track we just heard -- i'm too young for the archies

i experienced Phil Collins as a sweaty mess in a bar once. didn't help.
Avatar 9:56am ben abs:

  9:57am Dratsum:

I believe Sugar Sugar was written for the Monkees, they turned it down - and that’s when the Archie’s as a musical group happened.

Kirschner was born in The Bronx but lived in South Orange in the late 60's to mid 70's. For anyone who hasn't heard the story he had Goffin and King move to West Orange to get in touch with America's youth. Pleasant Valley Sunday was the result.

@Dratsum: "A Mouse of Today Pledge is any pledge $365 or higher. These pledges are used to support WFMU's online presence: our streams, archives, and podcasts, and mobile apps."

The following is courtesy of listener coelacanth∅ from Marty McSorley's show on 2019-03-19, also explaining the "house of today" pledge, which doesn't seem to be used anymore:

"that's where the "house of today pledge" came from -when wfmu was trying to buy a house. (then of course that birthed the "mouse of today pledge"; designated toward internet expenses)"

  10:23am jesse in illinois:

just did 10 bucks on the debit card to show my love for ja n the am. I prefer to just throw money into the big wfmu pot but...I love JA, he is so ahead with his looking back. I love when he plays tracks from 81, my birth year. Its hard to get the 70s to 80s musics scene but JA has clued me in, in his edgy but minimal way. I love the Clay too! Was hooked on Wake n Bake recently in the morn after some nite shift

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am VincentNifigance:

@LindaLee I'm hearing that people are listening for Clay and not necessarily the music, so I hope Clay gets a bit more creative control/programming input because he's more than earned it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Guido from Cologne:

Some friends of mit chatted with him in person. He was really a nice modest guy.
  10:26am David in London:

Well, hats off to JA for playing Patto. Ollie Halsall was years and years ahead of his time. He was also a classically trained vibraphone player, and got so fed up with the 'guitar hero' tag he only played piano on the next Patto album. A lost rock genius by any measure. Thanks JA.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Just John:

Avatar 10:27am Linda Lee:

@VincentNifigance ~ did you listen to the tryout shows? competition was tough! i did lobby Ken for Clay though. long time fan from Dusty days! Clay is magic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Ike:

@Linda Lee@10:23, indeed. And he's paid, which changes the equation. Volunteers are, and should be, able to control all their own creative decisions. @Vincent@10:25, I'd argue differently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am melinda:

@Linda I lobbied for Clay too, but I miss the Dusty Show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am VincentNifigance:

@LindaLee I was listening to the tryouts, I thought Clay's spirit was winning out, he was a little looser and more effusive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Cmurtha:

I didn't hear too much of the try-outs I forget what I was doing at the time, but I remember hearing x-ray's try out and clay's and he killed it the one time I heard him (they had a week to try out right?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Ike:

THAT WAS GREAT a couple of minutes ago where Clay tried to pull his usual "too intimate" thing that always ruffles Fabio and instead JA flipped it on him and made *Clay* uncomfortable trying to get him to come in there and touch him! Hilarious!
  10:30am Rachel Bo Bachel:

John Allen seems sweet
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am VincentNifigance:

@Cmurtha There was a month I think, and each had a week, but then it went to knockouts with a few more episodes per DJ and a wildcard from a local web station thrown in.

  10:32am David in London:

@Ike, Clay was mercilessly baiting Fabio on STF last night. JA's Pidge-containment strategy is - as you said - much better.
  10:32am Rachel Bo Bachel:

Ha ha JA cut off Clay’s mic when he was singin along
Avatar 10:33am Linda Lee:

Clay & Fabio's dynamic was brilliant. we were treated to the handover between Clay & Fabio every week after Dusty. golden.
  10:34am ?:

X.Ray did not try out for the morning show. There were three or four weeks of tryouts -- two shows each for however many people it was. 15? It was then narrowed down to three finalists - Clay, Jones and garbage Time. they did three show blocks for two months. Ken announced Clay as the winner on May 25, the thursday before memorial day, 2017

Thick as a Brick is a great concept album, just like mother's song Billie the Mountain, parodies that end up besting the thing they are chiding. Early Tull is great before it gets a bit too folksy/country as it goes along. I even like the synthier tull, "Too old to Rock and Roll too Young to die" is great for how silly it is

sorry clay - i'm in not even in whopper junior pay grade. i'm just in a cheeseburger or fishamajig bracket.

@linda lee I try to ignore the trolls on here which are few and far between

defining whether a type of organization (or disorganization) is "masculine" or "feminine" is a symptom of a desire to show approval or disapproval and thereby boost the definer's status

LL, I was kinda stunned that the dj joined in. No need to waste any more of my time over there.
Avatar 11:57am Linda Lee:

that's right Rachel! yin & yang are how it goes. if you look at the symbols of yin/yang, you'll notice there's a bit of yin in the yang & a bit of yang in the yin. one becomes the other. it's a lovely concept.

William Burroughs and the other beats had influence and inspired those who were re-wired and able to tune in to their message. They anointed the chosen. The Paris ordained. You had to be open to their signal.
Avatar 11:57am Linda Lee:

yeah, that's too bad.

This Gilbert O'Sullivan track is stellar, Pidge!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am Cmurtha:

I think that's a bit too rigidly Hegelian, I don't think we exist in this dialectic, but I don't have a good alternative since we love to think in these kinds binaries, and I don't think I've ever read a theorist who has ever produced a satisfactory response to the antagonism vis-a-vis Hegel, though they certainly have tried, its just a bit too much taking down masters house with his tool. (I hope this does not come off as an attack, more just musing/tossing a thought out there)

@LindaLee, @Cmurtha: I think we tend to classify things along binary lines out of a kind of laziness (two is one more than one, that's enough to divide everything up) but also because we do like antagonism and opposition (fight! fight!), when our experiences and organizations are richer and more complex
