A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am randyfrommichigan:

@Linda same here! I was just telling my wife that I wish I had taken advantage of DJ'ing when I went to University of Toronto ... however I didn't have parents paying for my tuition so I was working 2-3 minimum wage jobs all year round to pay my way thru ... had to even drop out of the college jazz band after a few months of my freshman year.
Avatar 9:41am Linda Lee:

sure. i get it! life intrudes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Webhamster Henry:

I'd like to point out on this largely Francophone friendly program that "Heavy Metal", the magazine, was translated from "Métal hurlant".
I don't know if there's a French cover of Matt's signature musical offering.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am randyfrommichigan:

@Linda I have guest DJ'd with a buddy of mine at University of Kettering's WKUF-LP and he said I'm welcome to do it again anytime so maybe I'll do that more, especially when I retire
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am randyfrommichigan:

@Linda yes exactly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am karlward:

Webhamster: you're playing a dangerous game. Don't dry up the donations with French language Felder.
Avatar 9:43am TDK60:

..in high school some students started a tiny radio station but wouldn't let me DJ, even though I donated some of my Yardbirds LPs.
  9:44am SeanG:

Avatar 9:44am Linda Lee:

yes, randy! do that!
@TDK60 ~ i'd take those Yardbirds lps right back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am sphere:

when i DJed at Carnegie Mellon during my master's degree, someone called and yelled "you are the best DJ ever!" i was playing a set of math rock at the time, so that was not surprising in Pittsburgh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am randyfrommichigan:

It's Like That ... AND THAT'S THE WAY IT IS
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am randyfrommichigan:

@sphere That is so cool!!! and LOL re math rock :P
Avatar 9:46am TDK60:

sphere: was it Don Caballero?
Avatar 9:46am Linda Lee:

since i'm ill & activity is limited, i like to encourage people to do what they'd most like to do while they can. it all ends soon enough!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am The Oscar:

My favorite college radio story was when the program director, who was a friend of mine, threatened to name my show for me if I didn't send her my show description. I missed the deadline, so she put me down for "CHILLIN' WITH THE BROS." I ran with it, and did my show for an entire semester as a fictional fratboy character (while still playing stuff like Sun Ra and Throbbing Gristle). Good times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am randyfrommichigan:

@Linda well said and thanks for doing that! PS sorry to hear you're ill and activity limited.
Avatar 9:49am TDK60:

..many eons later I got to guest DJ at a college station a few times; years after that, was an internet DJ for about 3 years. (Yardbirds LPs goners.. but I had taste, eh?)
Avatar 9:50am Linda Lee:

thanks, randy.
Avatar 9:51am Linda Lee:

TDK60 ~ indeed you did. as a kid in the 60s i loved the yardbirds almost as much as i loved the beatles! for me it was the beatles, the yardbirds & the dave clark 5 first. then came the mamas & papas :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am sphere:

@ TDK60 - I don't recall exactly but given that it was math rock, the probability is high that Don Caballero was involved somehow!.

Garbage (i.e. Matt W)

@Itzall Ablurr yes. single mother support.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am karlward:

I am still waiting for WFMU to organize MARIAH THREAT, a reunion of Mariah Carey with the members of Minor Threat as her backing band. Only you, WFMU, can make this happen.

Avatar 10:00am Linda Lee:

hi melinda!! thank you so much for being there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am sphere:

@TDK60 yeah, they had a good collection with a lot of obscure stuff. I found out about Magical Power Mako's Hapmoniym box set from there--it's SO good.

Avatar 10:03am Linda Lee:

@TDK60 ~ thanks dear!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am randyfrommichigan:

@The Oscar what a great story! My son is trying to figure out what he should call his show ... or just use the default show title "freeform" which is what a lot of DJ's do at WCBN.
Avatar 10:04am Itzall Ablurr:

Perhaps my first exposure to reggae (Kung Fu Fighting), unless "The Lion Sleep Tonight" counts. LOVE it.
Avatar 10:04am Linda Lee:

long term chronic illness that impacts your activity is a gift, in real ways. horrid packaging, but a gift! i realize time is short. that's a good thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am SeanG:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am randyfrommichigan:

@dotpattern very cool that you were a DJ and love the station name explanation!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am ɨkɛ:

I was a DJ at the long-lost WMNJ in Madison, NJ. 10 watts of throbbing music power! WFMU had a better signal in some of the dorms than we ourselves did, and the WFMU DJs had much better taste (WMNJ just let any student in and play anything, so there was too much Doors, Motown, Dave Matthews, and Billy Joel -- though Sugarwolf was there and played good stuff), so I usually listened to WFMU instead.
Avatar 10:05am TDK60:

..yes, Trouble & Matt are fun together. When else will we hear such funny vocalizations on the mike?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am randyfrommichigan:

@Itzall Ablurr LOL re Erasmus B. Draggin
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am joe:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am The Oscar:

@Randy Thanks! I had a bunch of shows over the years, at a couple of different stations. My favorite (and most purely freeform) was probably "Gonorrhea Gone Awry."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am randyfrommichigan:

@ike very interesting ... we seem to have a lot of former DJ's, part time current DJ's and DJ wanna-be's on the ACCU!
Avatar 10:09am Linda Lee:

  10:11am John from Florham Park:

@TDK60 that is the sucky part
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am randyfrommichigan:

@Linda I bet it does. We lost a full term baby about 15 years ago and my family and friends thought I was going nuts cuz I would say "I feel blessed that at least we have our son" (he was 6 yrs old at the time). But it was my survival technique.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am sphere:

@TDK60 Never heard WYEP--don't think I heard about them. Though I was among the first WFMU listeners to plug into the net stream (back in 1999). CMU actually had enough bandwidth to stream at the time.

@Linda thanks for posting that, glad you reconciled with you dad and completely agree with your comment! My brother and I also had a troubled relationship with our late dad, we both reconciled in different ways with him ... he got to meet my nephew Del (who's been on WFMU!!!) in the hospital days before he passed away.
Avatar 10:37am Linda Lee:

@randy ~ during that week he opened up to me a lot. told me things he'd never told anyone. i'm so grateful! he was a fascinating guy. when i was born he was an enforcer for the latin syndicate. not the italians. after he decided to quit & go straight he was nearly killed in an automobile accident that left him without his legs from the thigh down. the rest of his life was spent building a life from that experience. he did well!

@Linda yeah my dad was bipolar and wouldn't take meds until his final years so he led a tortured life ... loooong story ... but we figured out a "working relationship" ... I drove to Toronto every weekend for what turned out to be his final month or two of life to help manage his care in the hospital and manage his terrible behavior to my sister and the nurses at the hospital.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am randyfrommichigan:

@Linda we didn't even know what was wrong with dad, my mom used to think he was just "moody". I was taking an abnormal psychology class in my sophomore college year, read about "manic depressive" ... had a light bulb moment ... photocopied the section to my mom, brother and sister and wrote a note "I think this is dad". totally undiagnosed until then, around 1980.
  10:50am John from Florham Park:

@linda who did he try to elope with

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am randyfrommichigan:

@Linda yup my dad told me once we talked again that part of why he didn't want to take meds ... besides the side effects ... was that he felt so elated when he was in his manic phase it was like an addictive high.
  10:52am prudy:

i thought the "old" term for bipolar was manic depressive. That's what I understood as a kid.
Avatar 10:52am Linda Lee:

@randy ~ wow. amazing how that goes, doesn't it. my friend wasn't diagnosed for at least a decade after first going manic. that was the 70s. he was made to think there was something wrong with his character!!

@Linda @John my psyche textbook said that based on what they knew in the 70's there is a 30% chance that children of manic depressives will also get it ... so my brother and sister and I wondered which one of us would get it! Luckily we are all in our mid 50's and none of us got it so I think we dodged that bullet.

Dale - if you have a swag for life thing going you should email Joe or email upyours (@wfmu?) though I did mine through the normal means, and just confirmed that with Joe to avoid getting double billed since I upped my pledge twice this marathon.

in some towns in upstate NY you can't get reception, yet they have removed all the pay phones. I took a bus up once from the city and got stranded. A kindly storeowner let me use the phone.
Avatar 11:22am TDK60:

..there are a few phone booths left; wooden ones in the main NYC library but sadly they'll be ended. I think they still have more booths in England.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am randyfrommichigan:

@Cmurtha very cool. In the early 60's we lived in rural Alberta Canada and we actually had a wooden wall phone where you had to spin the handle to ring the operator and tell her the number you wanted to call!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Cmurtha:

@Dale, yeah I'd email Joe then, and he will get you sorted
Avatar 11:22am Linda Lee:

randy, there's a terrific video series called 'dirty old fun city' that compiles dramatic moments from 2 decades of hollywood films set in nyc. there are themes. one of the first themes is pay-phones! it's fabulous. vimeo.com...
Avatar 11:24am Linda Lee:

There are a few dolphin shaped pay phones down the hill from me, but they are not maintained. Then out of the other places I've lived, I think only my subway stop in NYC still had a functioning pay phone. The town in dutchess county I'm from never had one, and Columbus I think has lost all its pay phones too

@Linda If it makes you feel better, I think most kids in the not-disgustingly afluent parts of NYC learn about the revanchinism, and the fact that NYC is the city on the hill and exemplar for the militarization of America and the police either by direct exposure to it, or through education....Though you do have things like the Colony in Brooklynn where people proudly toute their violence racist nonsense. That narrative though certainly haunts our culture as a propt, and even people who know better like to toute it. I remember people upstate/the rich schmucks I was exposed to being really disparaging and condesending because I lived in Harlem with my family. The gentrification of my neighborhood only started much later, and they are taking full advantage of the Columbia kids to basically have people constantly moving in and out (since you can jack up the rent even if its rent controlled every time someone moves out). Its a shame
