"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Hi John Allen

sorry for shouting!
let's go team!!
Avatar 9:10am Wild Neil||Peace All:

So somebody gave us a combination coffee grinder/expresso machine, a real sturdy one from Montreal private label of an Italian company. Really really nice machine. I need to learn how to grind coffee the right size apparently, that is half the battle. Looking forward to serving guests cappuccinos and lattes.

Avatar 9:14am John Allen:

everybody hi!
Avatar 9:14am John Allen:

Rolinck's is the official JA in the AM sabbath song
Avatar 9:16am PKNY:

For whatever reason, I never got around to picking up Mark Hollis' solo record, and from what I've heard so far, that's a big mistake. RIP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am dale:

like this un-talk talk-like voice. what year is it from?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Krys O.:

Thanks for playing Mark Hollis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Krys O.:

I read his obit in the Washington Post and this intrigued me the most: His aim, he told the Times of London, was “to produce a piece of music so that it was impossible to know in which year it was recorded.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Krys O.:

And I loved Talk Talk. Such great pop music and that voice....
  9:21am Corey:

RIP Mark Hollis. Pretty special musician
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am steveo:

i like that quote krys
Avatar 9:21am TDK60:

Morning DJ JA. Only recently, via WFMU, did I find out Talk Talk and post T.T., went more and more experimental.
Avatar 9:22am TDK60:

..that's why you should send in your dollars, pounds, gold, etc. to the Woofmoo building soon..
Avatar 9:27am John Allen:

love that quote KO
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am sphere:

good morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am randyfrommichigan:

I only know It's My Life by Talk Talk ... I'm enjoying this one
Avatar 9:32am TDK60:

.."experimental" is a broad term but hopefully you get my gist.
Avatar 9:32am ben abs:

Avatar 9:33am ben abs:

Spiritualized took a Lot from this record
  9:34am prudy:

really enjoying the piano in these pieces...amongst other things
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Phillippe Bastille:

My goodness! Lovely set John
Avatar 9:36am TDK60:

Ben abs: huh, didn't know Spiritualized has this influence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Ken From Hyde Park:

It snowed lightly overnight here and the sunshine is making condensation rise from south-facing rooftops now. If only Little Susie were awake to see this!
Avatar 9:40am ben abs:

Spirit of eden specifically I think, especially if you consider Spiritualized tracks such as cop kill cop. Idk, I just heard it then and it seemed obvious, not something I've noticed before either
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am randyfrommichigan:

loving this smooth jazz funk!! Gotta tell my son, he's also a big fan of the genre
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am randyfrommichigan:

sounds like early 70's Herbie Hancock
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am sphere:

i dunno. chorus on bass is just bad in my book.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am randyfrommichigan:

I'm multitasking / working so I'm not listening too closely :P
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am sphere:

oh sure. as ol Saint Aquinas said "tastes are not to be disputed"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am randyfrommichigan:

I like the mood though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am sphere:

my favorite chorus bass is on "A Remark You Made" by Weather Report (Jaco) and "No One Is To Blame" by Howard Jones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am randyfrommichigan:

... and the mid 70's ARP synthesizer :)

I like the flow.
With religion and politics aside
Freeform Woofmoo is a very nice ride.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am randyfrommichigan:

@sphere one of my brother's friends got to meet Jaco one night at a bar in Toronto ... he told me they partied way too hard but how cool he got to hang with him ... and his friend is a huge musician and super fan ... so sad how young he passed away
Avatar 10:14am Chris from DC:

Aw, I missed the Mark Hollis portion. Also a latecomer to his solo record, but it's amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am steveo:

i thought freeform was a religion

Avatar 10:28am WmKMoss:

I've listened to WFMU a couple times in the past. Started listening again a couple weeks ago and I can't seem to stop. Always something new. And its all good.

this "canal st" track is great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am TomDash:

now we're talking...
  10:51am jesse in illinois:

i missed the beginning of the show and hearing mark hollis recordings too. i was surprised and bummed to see hollis' obit in my local paper. maybe i heard their radio hits as a kid but a decade ago plus talk talk later albums really blew me away. i always imagined spiritualized to have really felt that deep loud soft soul thing that talk talk really owned.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am randyfrommichigan:

nice hearing the Martha & The Muffins reference - from Toronto I believe - big hit was Echo Beach!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am randyfrommichigan:

@jesse I always thought of Talk Talk as a one hit wonder from the 80s, I remember dancing to it at the clubs, sadly I didn't realize that they have such a good catalog of music
  10:56am David Colangelo:

I was on Canal street yesterday....stopped at White Palace....great coffee....
  10:56am jesse in illinois:

and the show has been so good since i tuned in for the fun of wfmu playing yet another album named 'mutations', sunwatchers, scriabin breathing sounding so good and that canal st was dreamy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am randyfrommichigan:

@jesse I only know the Beck album called Mutations
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am steveo:

jive baby is not my lover
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am melinda:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am randyfrommichigan:

Avatar 11:00am TDK60:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am steveo:

hm 1981. jacko jacked it
  11:01am jesse in illinois:

i just assume lots of people name their album mutations and it all sounds messy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am randyfrommichigan:

Avatar 11:05am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@David Colangelo-I used to live in NYC and Canal Street seemed to be the heart of China Town with most businesses focused on Chinatown stuff...and Pearl Paint back in the early 90's. Has it changed a lot? I know Pearl Paint is not gone.....
Avatar 11:06am Chris from DC:

Ultrafrog. I like this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am adampsyche:

i want to get up to get a banana but i'm liking this too much to do so

Avatar 11:11am TDK60:

Pearl River mart was wild (still there?) with expensive Chinese music instruments right next to cheapo lamps.
Avatar 11:11am Wild Neil||Peace All:

I remember buying bricks of Maxell Chrome blank tapes there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am TomDash:

@Wild Neil - fun fact, I first met Daniel Carter on Canal Street. Mentioned I was a fan of his improv jazz band Test (back then they played on the 6 line in the subway station - Astor or Bleecker Stop) - he asked if I played and I kinda flubbed that I was self-taught drummer/bass player - not on his level - and he gave me his number and said let's jam sometime. Never called...
Avatar 11:12am Wild Neil||Peace All:

And Canal Surplus which had everything and anything.
Avatar 11:19am crateslinger:

All those stores are closed buy Canal St oddly still feels like it did back in the 80’s, just more tourists. Still plenty of scammers and people walking in the middle of the road. China town in general is pretty much the only Old New York feel in all Manhattan if you ask me.
  11:21am Andrea in Jersey City:

Pearl river mart moved to Chelsea market. Don’t go to Chelsea market if you’re the least bit claustrophobic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am randyfrommichigan:

heading out to get a haircut - in the words of Napoleon's brother - peace out
  11:25am matt:

Really nice show this morn. Nice vibes!
Avatar 11:27am crateslinger:

so about a month ago I was talking about a memorial day motorcycle ride for WFMU listeners and some people were into it. I got Ken’s permission to call it a WFMU event, but the station cannot sponsor it officially. Since then I have not known what to do to promote it because I didn’t want to talk about it all the time on the forum and bore everybody. Well a whole month has passed and I have done nothing, so here I am talking about it on the forum again. Ken from Hyde Park suggested going on Wake and Bake and I will next week but mean time - I’m gonna talk about it.
Avatar 11:28am crateslinger:

so Monday May 27, we’ll meet in the parking lot at WFMU and ride to Bear Mountain. Who’s down?
  11:31am steve gunn:

Digging the show Mr. JA!
Avatar 11:32am John Allen:

hey steve, coincidentally i'm holding your cd
Avatar 11:33am TDK60:

..still get an old town feel on smaller Village streets.
  11:33am jesse in illinois:

memorial day is trip metal and the big rave in detroit plus i dont have a motocyle but i want to see pics if the ride happens
Avatar 11:35am crateslinger:

I tried to get somebody to do a flier, but they never got back to me. Any artists here want to do a flier? Like I said this is approved by Station Manager Ken and could turn into a thing.
Avatar 11:36am crateslinger:

By the way, John Allen - I am listening and loving the show and not trying to hijack your message, but I need to start this thing.
  11:36am steve gunn:

Niiiiiiiice ✌
Avatar 11:37am crateslinger:

@jesses in illinois - I will be at Maryland Death Fest Saturday and Sunday. Coming back for this ride. Gonna be a full weekend!

How does it feel to be listened in Porrtugal?
  11:47am jesse in illinois:

oh i dont know if Trip Metal put out a lineup yet, too lazy to look it up. happened to see big rave lineup this morn so had tm on the brain.
Avatar 11:47am crateslinger:

Chris from DC we got a hotel for the two nights. My friends, Dissassociate are playing. Getting there for Voivod would mean too many days off and away from kids, dogs, cats, birds, and jobs.
  11:48am jesse in illinois:
