I have maybe three albums that I can listen to all the way through without jumping up and putting on another record because my brain does the DJ thing. lol.

Spotify pisses me off because every time you close it, it wipes the history. How am I supposed to remember the sequence of records??? Just ... urghhhhhhh.
  4:19pm

I don't like spotify because I feel like I'm at the same record store as everybody else and I want to visit far out places hahah

i fell in love as a small child. early 60s. & have always seen radio as a personal journey we're invited to take part in. it feels like an immediate friendship. what's befriended with spotify?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm
Jan Turkenburg:

I think Spotify is like the other media, it's the way you use it.
Avatar 4:20pm
Linda Lee:

it wipes out your history? that's shitty!

Martinibomb:

Ya know what people actually use those amazon devices to listen to to local radio more than spotify so I think most people agree
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Spotify isn't supposed to wipe out history. Overhere it doesn't....
  4:22pm
Martinibomb:

@Fab yeah I was searching your blog for one man bands for inspiration for that medium cool piano bar I'm workin on ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm

The first record I ever remember in its entirety is my favourite record :-) "Itchycoo Park" The Small Faces. I was 3 when that came out :-)

i remember the car radio before our home radio. nat king cole was a favorite before i could speak!
  4:23pm

The first record I ever remember listening to was a 60s comp my parents had which had I wanna hold your hand and Doo Wah Diddy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I have a Manfred Mann story this Friday ;-)
Avatar 4:24pm

that was the first single i asked for & owned! I wanna Hold Your Hand! bright gold & orange spiral design on the 45.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm

Yes LL, listening to radio in the car! No Milk Today, Penny Lane, Haha said the clown, "Grozer djeck" ;)

Rich in Washington:

I don't know what it is - age related techo-ineptitude - what? But I can't make Spotify work. I mean literally just work. It's weird. And I don't know if I want it to. I listen to almost 90% real DJ'd radio in one form or another.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Teenager Soap Opera (I'm Dutch and pronounced what I thought they were singing)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Out of breath. I just ran out to go put my pjs on, and then did the thing where I got my foot caught and nearly went arse over tit. Oops. Never dance when putting on pjs.
Avatar 4:28pm
Mr Fab:

i remember really being struck by "Uncle Albert Admiral Halsey" over a PA as a child, not out of a tinny AM radio. Just magical.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm
Rich in Washington:

I think Wild Thing by The Troggs was the first 7" record I bought myself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I am indeed LL! The Flange & Frigate Show :-) Just before the lovely Otis :-)
Avatar 4:29pm
Mr Fab:

Linda, Georgy rocks your world with '60s psych/garage sounds every Friday on "The Flange and Frigate."
  4:29pm
Martinibomb:

Oh I was obsessed with the Greatest American Hero theme I remember I got that on 45 and played it till it bled
Avatar 4:29pm
Linda Lee:

fantastic!
glad you're not hurt, as well!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm
Rich in Washington:

The first NEW 7" record I ever bought (maybe other than those Scholastic records you'd buy through school) was The Residents Satisfaction. I didn't even know what the Residents sounded like. I just blindly mail ordered it because it sounded cool in writing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

h now. First record ever bought ... single was Procol Harum "Pandora's Box". Album was ... Wings "Venus and Mars". But my mum gave me a copy of Herb Alpert's Greatest Hits when I was 4 which she won on the radio. Little did she know ;-)
  4:30pm
Martinibomb:

@Rich daaaamn! What was that like hearing them as a kid??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Keith West - Excerpt from a Teenage Opera, I meant of course. But a lot of music from 1967, when I was three, still has something magical for me.
Avatar 4:31pm
Linda Lee:

Herb Alpert was absolutely everywhere for a while there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I just read that Rich!!! HA!!! Excellent :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Blimey Jan - we're the same age :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm
Jan Turkenburg:

yes GG, explains a lot of our common taste, I suppose
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm
Rich in Washington:

It was incredibly mindblowing for me. I didn't immediately like it, but was sort of horrified by how weird it was and then I was hooked. It also made me realize that I have really peculiar music tastes which my friends did not understand at all.
  4:33pm
Martinibomb:

I loved Herb Alpert too.. the lady from Whipped Cream lives close to Portland area
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm
Rich in Washington:

The B-side of that record sounded like a demented children's record from another planet. I just couldn't believe it was real.
Avatar 4:33pm
Otis Fodder:

First record I bought with my own money (mowing lawns to flyering cars) was Bowie's Let's Dance on 7" at 14. Remember that well going to the record shop in San Diego. Before that it's a blur with parents helping to buy or gifts or whatnot... but def in the late 70s I wanted very Blondie, ELO, Led Zep, and Moodies release +++. Kids records from Banana Splits to Roosevelt Franklin were before thanks to my cool parents.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Roosevelt Franklin. That must have been sampled :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@MB - the Whipped Cream lady is still alive? That's so cool :-)
Avatar 4:35pm
Linda Lee:

i know that outcast feeling, Rich. my junior high buddies were real deep into Bowie & i loved Bessie Smith :-D
  4:35pm
Martinibomb:

yeh it's somewhat of a blur to me before 12/13 but I remember getting records at Bi-Mart in Roseburg Oregon as a child like that monster mash and Spider-man vs Draco
Avatar 4:35pm
Otis Fodder:

Many times. Still have the Roosevelt hand puppet my aunt gave me at like age 5. Ha!
Avatar 4:35pm
Linda Lee:

is this Riddle track truly called 'your zowie face'?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Like Thrillsville, man! You and your zowie face! ;-)
  4:36pm
Martinibomb:

yeah it's from the our man flint soundtrack which i stole from my dad
  4:37pm

I hope to one day visit The Enchanted Forest, that's just so cool.
  4:41pm
Martinibomb:

@Fab I wanna go with you if you do! It's only open from May-September
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm
Rich in Washington:

A lot of my earliest 'album' buying experiences were the $5.99 bin at Musicland (later subsumed by Sam Goody), but on cassette, because I didn't own a record player until my sister gave me her old one when I was probably 15 or so.
Avatar 4:41pm
Linda Lee:

here's what i'm wondering about: since our first conscious sense is hearing, does music touch us more deeply than other media? apparently we're hearing and responding to sound vibrations in utero.
  4:42pm
Martinibomb:

@Rich yeah same here Musicland in the mall hahah
Avatar 4:42pm
Otis Fodder:

MB - Thanks again for the word on the Enchanted Forest LP. It's a gem!!
Avatar 4:42pm
MrCrispy:

Enchanted Forest is almost hard to believe it's real
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm
Rich in Washington:

I too would love to visit the Enchanted Forest. The only time I ever went - I think I told this before - was hopping the fence while the place was closed for renovations in the late 90s.
  4:43pm
Martinibomb:

@LL I just saw a study that shows even if you get dementia you still remember music. I think it's part of the brain where language is
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda Lee - there's beena an article doing the rounds on facebook where studies suggest that sound and music are things that never leave us even in cases id dementia or such. So ... I think so. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@MB - snap!!! You posted it but then I saw a bunch of people posting it too. :-)
  4:44pm
Martinibomb:

As far as I'm aware it's the only theme park with it's own original music and pays no royalties to anyone plus his daughter made all the music.. just crazy. She later went to University of Oregon and got a degree in music
Avatar 4:44pm
Linda Lee:

i've seen that story too ~ along with a new study concerning the 'hearing' of plants! specifically flowers. they 'hear' an insect buzzing & sweeten their nectar production in response!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

It seems to have captured everyone's imagination today :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm
Rich in Washington:

You may be onto something, Linda Lee. I don't know anything else that moves me or affects me like music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm
Jan Turkenburg:

There's a Dutch neuropsychologist Eric Scherder, who published a lot about that, who confirms that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Ok ..... I have synasthesia (my spelling is shit) ... and I'm wondering if any of you do too?
  4:45pm
Martinibomb:

I like music because it's inexplicable to me why i like it. Love that mystery.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Willeke and I used to play live music for demented elderly. The sheer wonders we saw happening!
  4:46pm
Martinibomb:

Theres a kickstarter for Mort Garson documentary just starting up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

That's amazing, Jan - that must have been so fulfilling to see :-)
Avatar 4:46pm
Linda Lee:

a response to sound vibrations seems encoded.
remind me again GG ~ synasthesia is visual experience of sound?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm
Jan Turkenburg:

We often heard from the nurses that there were people singing along with us that hadn't spoken for months.
Avatar 4:47pm
Linda Lee:

that is beautiful, Jan! i can imagine!
Avatar 4:47pm
Linda Lee:

that is just fantastic.
  4:47pm
Martinibomb:

@Jan that's so awesome!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Depends LL - there are different types of syna-thingammy (I seriously can't spell!). I taste sound and colours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm
Jan Turkenburg:

For babies all senses are interconnected. They're slowly disconnected, in the first years of childhood, but for some reason with 20 t0 30 % of the people that doesn't happen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm
Jan Turkenburg:

or doesn''t happen completely
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

That ID just scared the shit out of me. LOL!
  4:51pm
Martinibomb:

I've read that the first two years for babies kinda lock on music in the way they do language and thats when they can develop that perfect pitch ear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm
Jan Turkenburg:

there are factors of influence however
  4:51pm
Martinibomb:

@GG haha yeah!! Lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Jan - I didn't know that! I guess that's why babies act like they're on acid. In a good way. :-) Like they're REALLY into everything without filters etc :-)
Avatar 4:52pm
Mr Fab:

I have a slight case of synasthesia, which i think is why ive always preferred strange and unusual music - its more colorful. Too much normal music is like drabs shades of beige everywhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm
Jan Turkenburg:

People with perfect pitch ears, always have some form of synesthesia to begin with
Avatar 4:52pm
Linda Lee:

wow. that sounds lovely, actually, GG.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Mr Fab. can you also literally get sick from boring music?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

99.9% of the time it's really cool - but sometimes I hear things that make me want to throw up. Literally. Or colours that make me gag. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm
Jan Turkenburg:

That's what I meant Georgy
  4:54pm
Martinibomb:

Hmm I've always had an ear for strange sounds too.. I wonder? I think it worried my parents a little
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I totally get that, Mr. Fab. That sense of "something extra" to certain sounds :-)
Avatar 4:55pm
Mr Fab:

Interesting question Jan, i have to give that some real thought!
Avatar 4:55pm
Linda Lee:

ah. definitely a down side.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm
Jan Turkenburg:

I know a professional jazz musician that really had to leave a Mozart symfony concert, because he really had to throw up. It was the simplicity of the harmonic structure he said
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Or like Mr. Fab said - sometimes sounds are just bland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm
Jan Turkenburg:

'monotony' I should have said
  4:58pm
Martinibomb:

@Jan I could see that. After Bach there was a march toward discord especially in the 20th century and jazz chords are more complex than what they used in early classical
  4:59pm
Martinibomb:

people didn't like discord.. twas the Devils Music
Avatar 4:59pm
Linda Lee:

Jan, i'm fairly sure i've got close to perfect pitch ~ much music or vocal work is just unlistenable to me, flat or sharp (mainly flat)~ & others think it's perfectly fine & enjoyable! i don't believe i have synesthesia though. music is strongly visual, but not halllucinatory... ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm
Jan Turkenburg:

MB and apart from the last 6 and 2 of the first, Mozart Symfonies are insanely boring
Avatar 5:00pm
Linda Lee:

or maybe we're not talking hallucination, exactly?
Avatar 5:00pm
Mr Fab:

I have that with some things like acoustic guitar folk type stuff. Its like being in an art museum where everything is looks...muddy. kinda hard to explain. But thats why no Dylan for me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm
Jan Turkenburg:

That's interesting LL!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

LL - it's ... hmmm ... let me think. Like as I'm listening I'm salivating because I can taste the sounds in my mouth. You know like when you smell dinner cooking? It's like that. :-)
Avatar 5:02pm
Linda Lee:

i find listening to Marianne Faithfull sing, fairly difficult.
  5:02pm
Martinibomb:

@Jan I'd agree. I suspect he probably liked more discord but there's no way the public would have been ready for that. They like those sweet sweet tri-chords
Avatar 5:03pm
Linda Lee:

that's an amazing way to describe it, GG. i get it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Maybe not hallucination, LL, but the scientific article I'm remembering talked about pitch being seemingly connected to another sense somehow.
Avatar 5:03pm
Linda Lee:

i should do some reading on it! never have, really
Avatar 5:04pm
Linda Lee:

no, it's clearly not hallucinatory ~ just joined sensory experience
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Come for the music, stay for the conversation :-) I love it here :-)

But I also remember it was hard to research this, becuase all the different manifastations of the phenomenom and also most people not even being aware themselves that this is something special.

Linda Lee:

right. not an easy thing to compare with others'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm
Jan Turkenburg:

yes! divisions are blurred! That's putting it right I believe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I guess it's hard to quantify too because like you say, different people have different experiences of it and different manifestations too.
  5:07pm
Martinibomb:

It's a hard thing to measure scientifically I think
Avatar 5:08pm
Linda Lee:

& our experiences are both unique to us & totally subjective! no basis for real comparison
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm
Jan Turkenburg:

But I remember that one out of 30 children should have it and so in each class I had... but I never found a genuine case :-)
Avatar 5:09pm
Linda Lee:

i just repeated what you said GG. different words. see! :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I was just recommended a group called "Gallimaufry" which apparently means "a confused jumble or medley of things" :-) I didn't know that :-)
  5:09pm
Martinibomb:

@Jan I've always been a little envious of your music work with kids it sounds super fun
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

One out of 30 children? Wow!
Avatar 5:10pm
Linda Lee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm
Jan Turkenburg:

it can also be very demanding, MB
  5:11pm
Martinibomb:

Gallimaufry is a super interesting word. Never seen/heard it before now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Wish i'd had you as a music teacher when I was a kid
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

It was a picture of Judy garland as Dorothy but with the Dark Side rainbow prism thing coming out of her head so I clicked on it an that's when I saw the definition. :-)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm
Jan Turkenburg:

thank you, MB I must admit I'm also proud of what I've accomplished in this town
  5:14pm
Martinibomb:

I wish I'd had a good teacher when I was a kid it was a real struggle. I think that's why I went toward sampling for so long
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm
Jan Turkenburg:

even though it burned me out in the end, but there where other factors to that... which I rather dicuss elsewhere ;)
  5:15pm
Martinibomb:

@Jan I'm sure it's the politics part of education that bummed you out. That's what usually gets people
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm
Jan Turkenburg:

MB, I'm a very lazy musician myself. I love working with samples.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm
Jan Turkenburg:

@MB That too... certainly!
  5:17pm
Martinibomb:

The cool thing now that I understand music I can do really cool stuff with samples that I never could before especially with the new samplers that allow you to stretch so you can make progressions etc..
