It's a Public Service Announcement fest, spliced, collaged and reinterpreted in real time. Later participation via live call-in telephone nonsense, and ambient noises.

The "Ad Council" was constantly sending tapes and CD's to the station. Some small fraction of these made it onto carts (like 8-track tape loops).

One day in early 1998, I showed up to the station, grabbed the massive box filled with these from the office, and started seeing what I could do with them on the air.

It was 10pm on a Friday night, and apparently I wasn't worried about offending anyone.

Today I'm playing sides A and B of the first aircheck tape. Tape #2 may never be heard again...

I really like PSAs.
Avatar 5:09pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

This is Side A of the first aircheck tape. I'll flip it after 45 minutes. (Show was 3 hours long. Tape #2 won't be heard today...if ever again...)
  5:12pm chresti:

PSAs scared the hell out of me when I was a kid
Avatar 5:12pm northguineahills:

I always found it curious my parents, fundies, and my father was an officer in the Navy, actively differed recruiters and told me not to join (when graduating HS) after I got a 99+ percentile on the test, and kept getting calls for the nuclear navy. (I liked taking tests) Probably for the best, I never could stand authority, I guess they knew who I was.
Avatar 5:15pm northguineahills:

Sounds almost like a Residents rekkid…..

ngh maybe they're still waiting to get you

Avatar 5:18pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

chresti yup, made by the ad industry, creepy stuff, all of it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Rich in Washington:

I was not here before.
Avatar 5:22pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@Rich It's true, you've finally done it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Rich in Washington:

We had a similar thing with Ad Council CDs at KBOO. We NEVER ran PSAs, but they kept coming in. But the weird thing was that our News/Public Affairs Director Kathleen apparently NEVER threw them out. She had thousands of them packed into boxes on the shelves of her already tiny office. She was such a hoarder, that by the time she retired, her desk area was like the seat of a Gemini space capsule - she just had room to sit down at her computer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Rich in Washington:

and then I came into the station to see six or seven big boxes of unopened PSA CDs stacked in the hall with my name and a question mark on them.
Avatar 5:24pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Yeah, the history in the piles in our station office were crazy. Unclear if anyone had ever looked at any of it before adding to the pile. When I took over as program director, I went through a pile of papers and found our license renewal in their, due soon, uncompleted.
  5:25pm Sandra:

Hi Ken!
Avatar 5:25pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Indeed, now that you remind me: One of the managers handed me this PSA box. Everyone knew me.
Avatar 5:25pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Welcome home, Sandra!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm listener james from westwood:

Been in since the git-go, but on the road. This mix is a total gas.
Avatar 5:26pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

listener james, just in time for the road segment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm Rich in Washington:

our program director now forwards every digital PSA to me. I don't think they mail out CDs as furiously as they did in previous years. It's mostly digital now, I think.
Avatar 5:28pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Can me and Olivia and you take me to the zoo?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm Rich in Washington:

Oh wow! This is fantastic!
Avatar 5:30pm northguineahills:

For Christ's sake, just take them to the zoological park!
Avatar 5:30pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

My heart is pounding as I anticipate the climb up to the over-the-top point, before it eventually collapses into silly and pointless phone calls

Avatar 5:46pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Avatar 5:48pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Those are Ad Council PSA gunshots. chresti, no wonder you were so scared of PSA's.
Avatar 5:51pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

This must be my David Cronenberg episode, where you get lulled into the thing and suddenly realize you're really disturbed by it and aren't sure if you should be looking.
Avatar 5:53pm northguineahills:

Avatar 5:55pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Oh there's probably going to be a station ID
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm listener james from westwood:

"She drives a wooden car" is a very 90s snark-lyric.

...I'ma take some space right here...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Rich in Washington:

I recently dreamt there was a brand of cigarettes called Father and Son Cigarettes. I think it was supposed to be an old ad from the 1940s. The pack had an illustration of a dad and a small boy, in portrait. You'd pull one out and a smaller cigarette somehow broke off of the regular cigarette that a child could smoke. It was in the form of an ad myself and someone else were looking it. We were surprised and appalled by it.
Avatar 6:06pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Smoking: If you think you're old enough to start, you're smart enough.

Avatar 6:11pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

And the first caller has called in, changing the entire format of the show forever.
Avatar 6:13pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Avatar 6:26pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Now it's yet another format. This should be called part 3
Avatar 6:27pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Whoops, tape 1 runs out in 5 minutes and I don't have tape 2 here (it's in a BOX)
Avatar 6:28pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I am proud of us for trying. This fellow used to call into my show and scream into his phone from his parents' basement.
Avatar 6:29pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Good thing this tape is running out.
Avatar 6:29pm Carmichael:

Late hello, Kenzington and other smokers/dads (I am one but not the other).
Avatar 6:29pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

It's now 11:30pm on a Friday night and apparently I'm even less worried than before about offending anyone. Little did I realize this tape would get played on the internet.
Avatar 6:31pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

We've jumped ahead a few months. Here I let the live phone callers try to talk to samples of each other. I'm pretty sure I never speak in this one.
  6:32pm chresti:

Late Friday night means everyone’s lubricated and toasted
Avatar 6:34pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I'm supposed to be training my DJ apprentice who for some reason specifically wanted to pair up with me, so I just gave him his own studio and aired him simultaneously.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Gary:

Hey gang
Avatar 6:35pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

3 phone lines on the air, someone is sitting in another studio not knowing what's going in, I'm in a different room figuring out how to use a Windows 95 computer to sample from the board
Avatar 6:36pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

The strange apprentice is responsible for the club music and droning narration
  6:36pm chresti:

It’s getting interesting
Avatar 6:36pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I'm astonished at how different this all is from the cut-ups part.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Rich in Washington:

I used to get asked to let DJ hopefuls shadow me but most of them seemed nonplussed by me playing 4 or more things at the same time and eventually I was never asked to do it anymore.
  6:41pm chresti:

That sounded like Marty mcsorley laughynd
  6:41pm chresti:

*laughing
  6:42pm chresti:

The giggle/chuckle
Avatar 6:43pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Avatar 6:46pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Avatar 6:46pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Using CoolEdit Pro, same as today
Avatar 6:47pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Why do you want to know who I am and then tell me things like that?
  6:49pm chresti:

Because she likes it
Avatar 6:49pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I'm having trouble fathoming that there were 53 shows between these two shows, only 7 months apart. And wondering if this is the sound of devolution.

Avatar 6:52pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@chresti I love Wobbly and by the time of this show I had met him
Avatar 6:54pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

There's no transition out of this. How do we escape...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Gary:

  6:55pm chresti:

Yeah/ I first heard him on Shirley and Spinoza
  6:56pm chresti:
