Rally cap on
Avatar 9:38am crateslinger:

I been surrounded by Jazz guitar lately. Thinking about buying an epiphone dot. Anybody know anything?
Avatar 9:38am crateslinger:

I’m not much of a player. Less than two years and I’m 51, so I will always suck, but I play like two hours a day. Can’t stop.
  9:40am MplsCoco:

Beautiful show so far Scott!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Booz:

crateslinger - that's exciting, keep it up, so cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Booz:

This year The Long Rally has been a graduate seminar on the wiggier reaches of jazz guitar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Stephen O:

Yes, beautiful Scott. Some much needed cerebral distraction.
Avatar 9:44am Chris from DC:

Eisenberg also has a duo record with Shane Parish coming soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Barney Grubbs:

@crateslinger - don't know if it helps but I bought an epiphone les paul a few years ago and it has been solid & for occasional middle-aged noodling
Avatar 9:44am crateslinger:

thanks Booz. I’m diggin it. Might play on the subway. I got like 10 country songs down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Booz:

The latest Steamroom is a mind-stretching listen.
Avatar 9:46am mb:

Great segue in to that bed music today, btw
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Booz:

crateslinger, let me know what station, I am an enthusiastic listener of buskers!
Avatar 9:47am crateslinger:

@Barney Grubbs. That sounds about right. I tried my friend’s electric. It’s nuts. So different.
Avatar 9:47am crateslinger:

Ha! Booz - I’ll be out by the airport on the E train at like 4 am for the first year or two. Probably won’t even play if somebody else is on the train!
  9:49am elf:

RIP Mark Hollis. Anyone here familiar with "Spirit of Eden", "Laughing Stock" or his solo LP? They'd fit right into this show. Just listened to an interview with him talking about Roland Kirk, Sketches of Spain, Tago Mago and Forever Changes.
Avatar 9:49am crateslinger:

or platform. My freind makes $100 in like 2 hours around Union Square. Unfortunately he then gets drunk. Also he has to play stand by me like twenty times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Phillippe Bastille:

Hi all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Booz:

disintegration loops live
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Rich in Washington:

Disc rot sucks! I'm starting to experience that with some - especially generic brand - burned or purchases CDRs.
Avatar 9:52am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Who has carrot cake?
Avatar 9:52am WmKMoss:

Jah Lites - "Right Road To Zion" bed music, very nice, thanks mon
Avatar 9:53am Chris from DC:

Is that lard free carrot cake?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Rich in Washington:

I started using those Panasonic/Taiyo Yuden brand CDRs years ago and they're supposed to be pretty archival safe. We'll see in a few years.
Avatar 9:54am AnAnonymousParty:

What? He just makes shit up?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am steveo:

lol that segue
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am randyfrommichigan:

I love the jazz improv 101 explanation!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Rich in Washington:

What's also scary, prosumer grade CD playing equipment are getting rarer and rarer.
Avatar 9:56am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Fear not, Toad. The lard cake is for later. If things get extremely.......challenging.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Booz:

When I was ripping all my CDs to FLACs last year, I found that a few that I bought in the eighties had disintegration problems that made them unplayable. All my vinyl is in great shape. (So is my carrot cake.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am randyfrommichigan:

@Booz wow re CD's ... and they were marketed as indestructible!
Avatar 9:59am βrian:

High gravity on the isthmus today. Good morning.
Avatar 9:59am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Booz:

In the eighties I thought I was indestructible too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am randyfrommichigan:

@Booz we all did I think! :P
Avatar 10:04am Chris from DC:

Love this version of the Flintstones theme.
Avatar 10:05am βrian:

Y'all got to get your migration strategy in order. Put out a call for audio archivists to lend help. We're doing quite a bit of file migration where I work, but mostly images.
Avatar 10:09am AnAnonymousParty:

Do the burned discs have stick-on labels? I've found that over time, the labels shrink and causes the disc to warp or 'dish', with the effect that it plays fine, at first, when the laser is tracking the inner tracks, but as it moves towards the edges it has a harder time focusing on the outer tracks where the warp has a greater impact. You think it's rot, but it's not. I have been able to fix a few just by gently flexing them, dunno if it stretched the label back or removed the warp, but the disc will often play again. But it's also easy to snap a disc if you are not careful or the plastic is particularly brittle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am randyfrommichigan:

I love this "basics of jazz improv". I play trombone in several bands as a hobby (a couple are jazz) but I'm not very good at improv. My son was the pianist in his high school jazz band a few years ago and got decent at comp'ing - I was so impressed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am randyfrommichigan:

the smear! Had to do some of those at my concert on Sunday :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am dei xhrist:

Avatar 10:28am Rev. Turnip Druid:

I still have the first CDs I ever bought (a saturday in 1992, syracuse. i remember it well) - both play perfectly. Many pro-manufactured ones from more recent times haven't fared so well...
  10:32am Andy the painter:

this is great. i’m running a vacuum sander at work right now, and this piece just goes perfectly with it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Booz:

Ooh Merzcast sounds great.
Avatar 10:35am AnAnonymousParty:

@rev: Huh, it's almost like, at first, CDs were considered something special and rare that had only a limited appeal and were created with care and quality, and then later became a commodity to be produced as cheaply and quickly as possible with no regard to quality or longevity. I wonder how that happened?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am randyfrommichigan:

Jump The Shark ... cool Jon Hein / Howard reference ... hit 'em with the hein!

Women and men are the same now.
Avatar 10:48am crateslinger:

the worst thing about working from home (which I do somedays) is eating my lunch at 9:30 and drinking way to many expressos. I am like freeking out.
Avatar 10:49am crateslinger:

geez omg - espressos.

See what I mean!
Avatar 10:50am WmKMoss:

My wife calls them expressos, I love it. Express-O!
Avatar 10:50am crateslinger:

This show is great. I don’t just mean today. Good Job Scott! You had some shoes to fill.
Avatar 10:50am AnAnonymousParty:

At least you didn't say esprexxos. That would be weird.
Avatar 10:51am crateslinger:

Express - O MY GODD!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am steveo:

whispers: i hope scott will have a spot when ken comes back
Avatar 10:52am βrian:

@crateslinger: I assume that's a typo, but I know what it's like to drink my way to many espressos. That path generally involves red wine or Armagnac.
Avatar 10:52am crateslinger:

yeah steveo, and during normal human hours

ps - all humans live in new york city (tongue sticking out)
Avatar 10:53am crateslinger:

Good idea Brian - IPA’s at lunch! Since I already ate the one my wife made me.
Avatar 10:54am AnAnonymousParty:

I'm learning a lot about Jazz today.
Avatar 10:56am AnAnonymousParty:

I'm waiting to hear one of these educational segments followed by some Ornette Coleman.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am randyfrommichigan:

I am the same re coffee ... I work from home when I'm not traveling for work and I limit myself to 8 cups on the coffeemaker ... sounds like a lot but it's really only 4 mugs .... today I got kicked out of the house and I'm "working" at Starbucks ... limited myself to one venti cafe americano :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am randyfrommichigan:

@Scott I'm really enjoying your show today - I loved the jazz improv 101
Avatar 10:58am mb:

Sunwatchers were very impressive at their record release show last week. I really like what they have come to be. The bass sound live was very hard hitting and therapeutic
Avatar 11:02am ben abs:

Anybody listen to the Minutemen cover album Sunwatchers did? JA has played it a few times. Fire!
Avatar 11:03am ben abs:

lol. here it is
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Scott McDowell:

This is it! Right now. : )
Avatar 11:06am doncaballero:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Devin B.:

Here we go!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am tim from champaign:

Hello! I like that the Trouble in Mind records label has been getting weird. They were always solid but this recent lane change is great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am maestroso:

Howdy Scott, just joining for the Laddio!
Avatar 11:17am doncaballero:

Nice, Scott!! You're killing it this AM. I remember you playing this back in the day before the most recent hiatus. Already have my clicky-star from back then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Mick:

This has been an astonishing morning for music! Rally on.
Avatar 11:26am crateslinger:

This Coptic Light is infinity manifest.
  11:27am Listener Gregory:

Ptah, the El Dauod is officially a WFMU hit. I've heard it three times in the past few days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am tim from champaign:

So if I adopt a DJ, does that mean I am responsible for buying their pot and supporting their record habit?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am steveo:

according to the advanced playlist search, those 3 times are all the times (i blame the new bin)
  11:32am JetBoy of Brooklyn:

That’s right - keep with the rock!
Avatar 11:34am crateslinger:

I used to sell pot to a WFMU dj.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am sinner:

This is how a playlist poster writes.
  11:35am Listener Gregory:

@steveo Doug Schulkind uses the original Alice Coltrane version as talk-over music quite often.
  11:36am fletchernyc:

Hey Scott! Great show! Who is the Jazz educator excerpt guy again?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am steveo:

@greg cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am steveo:

the a.c. version has been played many times, of course
Avatar 11:42am AnAnonymousParty:

Sounds like the jazz education guy has had a few too many espressos all of a sudden.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Barney Grubbs:

when I saw a.c., my first thought was of AxCx, which just isn't right.
  11:42am Listener Gregory:

@steveo Oh, I was talking about the composition—not any particular performance of it. I've now heard the Sunwatchers version twice. It's interesting that they felt confident enough to do a piece that had Pharaoh Sanders, Joe Henderson, Ron Carter, etc. on the original. That would have paralyzed me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am steveo:

sorry about that gregory, and everyone
Avatar 11:47am SSS:

What your playing here has been a really fitting background to the Cohen testimony happening right now. Brings it all together for the WFMU brain. Thanks!
  11:47am Listener Gregory:

No, *I'm* sorry!
Avatar 11:50am AnAnonymousParty:

Is this Tuva throat violining?
Avatar 11:50am WmKMoss:

My aunt used to listen to some pretty wild jazz. It was the first time I ever heard the saxophone. Scared the hell out me. I was only 4 or 5. This Sunwatchers and Eugene Chadbourne piece reminds me of that time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am steveo:

thanks for the show, Scott
