Howdy folks. Howdy Joe. Joe - I sent you an email today and forgot today is your show. Carry on.

That walking bass, that flute and those cool swells of brass. Our prime suspect is one Henry Mancini.

Good morning.

Still reeling from incredible Ken Nordine opening salvo last week. If you missed it, you should head to the archive later.

Mornin'! Thanks for the reminder on the Nordine set-- I was on vacation last week and missed it, but I definitely need to check it out. What a legend.

Great tune. And good background to put on a turtleneck sweater and chase a criminal. Or to get an a Batman style fight.

Juvenile delinquent movie theme circa 1956.

Avatar 9:30am ManhattanMike:

Love the scene in Sweet Smell of Success where Burt Lancaster pulls out a cigarette and goes "Match me, Sidney!!!" to Tony Curtis...without even looking at him
Swag For Life Member 9:32am davehamilton:

good movie Joe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am VincentNifigance:

Yes! Great film, becomes more relevant with the passage of time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am The Oscar:

Just saw SSoS maybe a year ago, and it really is great. Burt Lancaster gives one of those performances that's completely terrifying while rarely raising his voice or standing up.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Hughie Considine:

Avatar 9:45am Sem:

A poet and don't know it.
Hughie, do not know Monochromes, but now looking up some lyrics.
Maybe they have an opening.
Wallington, Oxfordshire.
  9:49am Brendan:

@Joe, you could back announce by 1)saying you hadn’t prepared a speech, followed by 2) thanking all the artists in the set , then extemporaneously thanking random objects in the studio then cause a stir by getting naked and go off on a cause célèbre diatribe ,on say like, Don Felder.
Avatar 9:51am Roberto:

That "Joonta" song takes me back to '82, when all the British press were reporting on the Falklands War and the Argentine "Joonta."
Swag For Life Member 9:51am davehamilton:

i only know WallingFORD in Oxon
Avatar 9:52am Joe McG:

@Brendan: Ha ha ha, wish I had!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Hughie Considine:

@Sem, you'll see they are lyrically audacious in every way.
@Joe, thanks for choosing from the breadth of TMS oeuvre -- I admit I am stuck on the classic-era records so this is an eye-opener.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Krys O.:

It may be just a hunch , but I’m noticing more than a little alliteration iteration (iteration) in the song titles . Joe you are a mad scientist!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am The Oscar:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Hughie Considine:

@futurescamp -- I can see that! And of course "mony" pronounced that way doesn't have a real English equivalent. I love how those songs and lyrics we misunderstood as kids stick with us and bring us back to a good place.

Funky shit goin' down in the city

@ Ven
those were golden days.
my kids have no idea what AM radio is.
  11:16am Brendan:

Crosswinds and trade winds too . There. Now we have four strong winds. May the wind be at yer back in any case today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Ken From Hyde Park:

As I reported during Wake 'n' Bake, the wind blew over a basketball hoop into the rear window of my car overnight. Insurance will fix it, so that is good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am tim from champaign:

That Jon Camp was mighty fine.
Avatar 11:24am Joe McG:

@tim; I meant to play it a couple of weeks ago, but I'm glad I waited since we got the vinyl in. I was going to play an mp3.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am tim from champaign:

Thanks for waiting, Joe! Jon Camp is completely new to me. Great set of guitar finessing!
  11:27am Fashion Tashjian:

@NGH we'd have to look into the numbers, but as commenters to listeners per capita, perhaps. There's as far as I know 4 active listeners including myself, and two of us consistently comment. There's roughly 3 million of us. So, there's one and a third people per million that listen here. BUT - we have a 50% participation on the comments rate. I'm wonder how we stack up against Other developing nations with regards to FMU))
  11:31am Brendan:

@Ken from HP sorry to hear . You got it much worse than me - just a plastic lawn chair knocked over here and a plastic bag/grill cover blown into neighbor’s yard . #WeWillRebuild #MarylandStrong
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am steveo:

this rocks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Rich in Washington:

My ancient, broken and apparently neglected sitar finally committed suicide and jumped off its high perch on a shelf where it had been relegated to life as a simple decoration. Its gourds shattered into a hundred pieces so I had to throw it away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Hughie Considine:

@steveo Eventually the cleaned-up version, with "funky kicks," replaced it, but for awhile, yeah. If you listen to the end of "Hot Stuff" by the Stones, Mick sorta says, "All those people down in Jamaica/they all fuckin' in the sun" ... I think that still passes.
Avatar 11:33am Joe McG:

David First doesn't know how to play a sitar, which makes this interesting!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am steveo:

@hughe, not sure i ever heard kicks (maybe i just never wanted to)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am tim from champaign:

Slippery When Wet? How about Crazy From The Heat!
  11:35am paul:

Speaking of sitars, happy birthday, George Harrison!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Hughie Considine:

@Steveo, there were two versions, maybe you just missed the G-rated one. I had a friend who SWORE that the very last thing Robert Plant wails at the end of Whole Lotta Love is "Pull my cock, yeah."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Cmurtha:

What is everyone's favorite version of Scarborough Fair? Obv Simon and Garfunkle is lit, this version is new to me but it is also lit. I'm partial to Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66's version. Which plays in one of Ralph Bakshi's few good movies.
  11:38am Brendan:

Barleycorns sage and herbs de provence. Sorry S&G i’m riffing on the original recipe. That’s jazz man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am steveo:

Cmurtha, this one is now, WOW

Hughi,e I believe it all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am steveo:

Avatar 11:43am Joe McG:

@Brian: March 17th! @Hughie: I love him without reserve.
Avatar 11:43am Sem:

Ah yes: is the 2019 DJ premium list posted anywhere yet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am steveo:

here's the personnel listing for Hasting's Street Opera:

Cro-Magnon Man Flute
Bumble Bee Electric Lester; Schmalz
Mole Fender Jazz Bass, Acoustic Guitar
H. Root Wellott Drum, Gee-Whiz Teen appeal

There is a WFMU dj who speaks over this, and I will make a real unhip confession, whenever I hear it "Some Velvet Morning" gets stuck in my head. I'm sorry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am steveo:

here's more on the hasting's

Avatar 11:48am Joe McG:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am steveo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Hughie Considine:

@Cmurtha, I do too. Gabor covered Some Velvet Morning, so clearly he was aware of this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Cmurtha:

That's good to know, I am glad I'm not the only one too.
