@ken If there's something worthwhile going on in Baltimore, something will mess it up...
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2020 Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Cmurtha:

Now, here is the question: Did they take the riff from its source directly, or did the Gagoosh song come out first as an intermediary between the two?

I feel like everytime I am up to hear your show life I get a turkish banger.
  3:27pm P-90:

Yes, that JCS riff always pops out at me too! But it works, it’s not just a distracting appropriation or “quote” like one hears occasionally...

Late response to response on date of 50+ show. Folks always need to check info four times, and info providers need to provide/frame it/restate it/grab-my-head-and-point-it eight times before we have the "Oh, yeah" moment.

  3:34pm P-90:

That JCS riff has a Middle Eastern feel to begin with, the truth might be that someone on the original JCS writing/arranging team might have copped it from something that originated there. In which case Gagoosh and others are just bringing it home...!

Me to Jocelyn
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2020 Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Cmurtha:

That is possible P-90, I do suspect JCS is the origin, 70s turkish Pop had a vogue of taking Arabasques/Western pop and Turkifying it. Esemeray for instance has a great song that is sung over "Jezahel" that rocks. As a total aside this borrowing is a plot point in the movie Unatarsam fısılda which has a pretty damn good sound track.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2020 Swag For Life Member 3:48pm listener james from westwood:

This was when my circle was still heavily playing Def Leppard's "Hysteria" and "Appetite for Destruction" during roleplaying nights during breaks from college. And the "Untouchables" and "Lost Boys" soundtracks from the previous summer too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Phillippe Bastille:

so, what have you been up to, Sheila?? hang in there , Jocelyn!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Phillippe Bastille:

@tim and @tneld I read something a while back that everything Malcolm McClaren created was really just radio-oriented pop, from BowWowWow to the Sex Pistols. Even referred to the Pistols as punk's first Boy Band. Funny how history shines a different light on what we were seeing in the moment
  3:56pm John from Florham Park:

BK845 that is an understatement about Dave
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm tim from champaign:

@tneeld - No kidding! At the time, I chalked Lita Ford up to being bad butt rock but that was long before I was aware of the Runaways and anything they were influenced by. Just goes to show kids (ie myself 30 years ago) don't know shit.
  3:58pm John from Florham Park:

@phillipp I think Malcom was saying that as a put on about the Sex Pistols

@tim - I love when my 7 year old self had better taste than my 13 year old self. (Crystals' Da Do Ron Ron vs ummmmm...Information Society?)

good morning/evening everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm tim from champaign:

@phillippe - there's something there for sure. Oddly enough, the Pistols were the most boy band like with Sid Vicious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Phillippe Bastille:

@John was thinking the article's writer saying that but you may be right. I do remember Lydon referring to Malcolm as the most manipulative person he ever met.
  4:02pm Skagbaron:

Shiela, will you go and see Stereolab when they reunite this tour?
Avatar 4:03pm djsheilab:

HA! Skagbaron—good psychic skills!
  4:04pm Jocelyn:

NGH, I've never visited there. That's the one Disney park I haven't been to. I went to one in China last year and it was surreal.
Avatar 4:04pm JakeGould:

The fish (looks like a toy?) on this Malka Spigel track cracks me up!
  4:04pm John from Florham Park:

Yeah I heard that about Malcom

Avatar 4:06pm northguineahills:

@Jocelyn: Being at Disney parks in HS as your first experience on psychedelics, is surreal....

(the only other one I've been to is Tokyo Disneyland).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Phillippe Bastille:

@jakegould I had a flashlight that looked like that fish. You squeezed it and the mouth would open and the bulb would protrude and illuminate the room by a half a lumen or so. Wonder if its the same

SHEILA UR SO KOOL!!
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2020 Swag For Life Member 4:07pm tneeld:

I'm very excited to see them in October...I'll get to complete the great missed-in-college concert triptch of MVB, Slowdive and Stereolab.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm tim from champaign:

Woohoo! I'm happy to say I've seen Stereolab 3 times. I saw them for the first time in 1993 on their tour with Unrest. It really opened my mind to what can be done with keyboards and synths.
Avatar 4:08pm JakeGould:

I remember buying “Peng!” at Kim’s on Bleecker Street back in 1993 or so. Import prices. crappy office job. Made my days a lot better.
  4:08pm P-90:

Now that set was the essence of Freeform
  4:08pm John from Florham Park:

@skag that is one of the reasons why I love this station

Woah @EarlyMorningInSeoul! That is VERY exciting. Who knew it would travel so far?

Avatar 4:24pm EarlyMorningInSeoul:

@Jocelyn: If you plan on heading to Korea, I can definitely give you tips on where all the cool record stores are. Plus there are some really awesome LP bars here too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Matt Fiveash:

That Julie London stuff with just guitar and upright bass is so f'in good!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Guido from Cologne:

The way "reality" and "plot" intersect is far out.
