I have a big collection of answering machine tapes. The incoming ones are a kind of weird autobiography, with deceased friends and past relationships. I also produced (over produced?) outgoing messages on my 4 track, many of which are audible on my website.

Back in college, I would use my recs of Reading Rainbow, Sesame Street, etc, or random noise. By the time I got a cell phone (soon after), I stopped putting the effort in, as I rarely checked voicemail.
