Avatar 9:34am TDK60:

randy: I have a pal who lives in NE Detroit, not far from the border with Hamtramck.
  9:34am randyfrommichigan:

no my wife's mother ... he lives in same little city - Hamtramck
  9:36am randyfrommichigan:

@TDK60 cool! I drove from Hamtramck to Warren a few weeks ago and had to drive thru NE Detroit, pretty scary area, hopefully your pal is in a decent part

  9:41am randyfrommichigan:

@TDK60 that's cool, that's what you gotta do ... my mother-in-law is the same, tough German lady, friends with her non-white neighbors in Hamtramck, they help each other out to survive there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am The Oscar:

Mornin'! Not sure if he remembers me, but I'm 90% sure I used to work with Jason from Anteloper at a major chain bookstore in Boston maybe 15 years ago. If so, tell him I say howdy!
Avatar 9:43am TDK60:

..he told me he's had some close calls; once at a traffic stop some kids put a pistol in his face. He ripped the gun out of their hand and drove off.
  9:43am poo-mania:

Barnes & Noble then
  9:44am randyfrommichigan:

@davefromtoronto has been there too many years ago ... wassup bro?
Avatar 9:44am TDK60:

..another time he was sitting in a mainly black bar and the cops came in and beat up everybody, for no reason.
  9:45am randyfrommichigan:

@TDK60 wow! I wish I didn't know that ... I try to avoid driving thru that area ... when I did it back in December it was the evening, I think I might have only seen one or two cars during 10 min of driving, almost no houses or people, was relieved when I crossed 8 mile rd!
  9:45am randyfrommichigan:

@TDK60 wow again
  9:47am Brendan:

TDK, was his name by chance, Walt Kowalski? I’m getting a visual from Grand Torino.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am The Oscar:

@poo-mania Yep-- in the music department, which attracted a very specific strain of batshit customer. We had not one, but two regulars who were street clowns (named Bobo and Scruffy). They were literally feuding. It was insane.
Avatar 9:48am TDK60:

Brendan: No, Mike. Obviously not easily intimidated.
  9:48am randyfrommichigan:

@Brendan LOL totally! Loved that movie BTW.
  9:49am poo-mania:

did the clowns buy music books or cds
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am The Oscar:

@poo-mania I don't remember if Scruffy ever bought anything, but Bobo would exclusively buy Lou Monte CDs, which he would order 5 or 6 at a time. He eventually exhausted the supply at the warehouse, and subsequently threw a fit.
Avatar 9:54am βrian:

Was there a recent change to the CSS for the playlist? The comments text is cut off on the right.
  9:55am poo-mania:

if thats true, then it must have been quite a bizarre thing to witness. I wonder what ever happened to Bobo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am coelacanth∅:

good morning Scott & others
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am The Oscar:

@poo-mania I still see him around town occasionally, which never fails to make my blood run cold. My girlfriend describes my reaction as "Like when a cat sees another cat."
  9:59am poo-mania:

does that make u a clown in her eyes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am The Oscar:

Ha-- If there's one thing I learned from the experience, it's that we're all just a few steps away from becoming just another unstable balloon clown.
  10:01am poo-mania:

pretty much sums me up
  10:02am Brendan:

Brian, CSS? Nobody says that and lives - not in this here town! Thats high falutin web developer talk! He’s one of them! Git a rope!
  10:02am randyfrommichigan:

@The Oscar yup so true!
  10:03am JakeGould:

@TheOscar: So these were balloon guys? Weird middle aged men to hang out in the malls, main streets and near playgrounds making balloons and people accept that as if that is normal?
  10:05am poo-mania:

i expected this reaction from Jake
  10:06am poo-mania:

clowns are lovely, trying ti make everyones day happy; at least when on duty
  10:06am Brendan:

Seriously Jake , thats a clown question.
Avatar 10:08am βrian:

@Brendan: I'll tell you I honestly believe javascript is the root of all evil, if that helps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am The Oscar:

@Jake To be fair, I don't think anyone could take a look at either Bobo or Scruffy and think "normal." The only times I ever saw Bobo "on duty" was in the subway, which was even more unnerving. We had a news clipping behind the register from when Bobo got arrested for making lewd balloon animals. I swear I am not making this up.
  10:09am Brendan:

@Brian I ++ that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am coelacanth∅:

my next band: "lewd balloon animals"
  10:10am poo-mania:

u sure these werent just homeless guys who found some funky clothes and a bag of balloons
  10:12am poo-mania:

my worst fear if i was homeless is where am i gonna take my next *hi*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am The Oscar:

@poo-mania Honestly, that's probably a pretty apt description of Scruffy. Bobo at least had a phone number, which I had to call whenever his Lou Monte CDs came in. His outgoing message had calliope music on it, and ended with him making calliope noises with is mouth (which didn't line up at all with the actual background music).
  10:13am Listener Gregory:

Any idea if this is composed or a group improvisation?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am coelacanth∅:

so you have poo-phobia?
  10:14am JakeGould:

@coelacanth∅: How many bands have you had?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Krys O.:

Don't feed the trolls.
  10:15am poo-mania:

@TheOscar, these tales are charming if true, but beware, they are almost at the level where some in here may call u out as a troll, or a clown if youre lucky
Avatar 10:16am TDK60:

Alice shall please all..
Avatar 10:16am βrian:

Cat has found lap ...
  10:19am poo-mania:

itll be almost Criminal now is Scott doesny ask Jason about Bobo n Scruffy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am The Oscar:

I promise these are all true (and they're not even the craziest stories!). I have friends who worked at Tower Records in Cambridge who also had to deal with him. He was something of a scourge for a while there. I think he finally got banned a year or two after I quit.
Avatar 10:21am βrian:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Barney Grubbs:

Jaye P. Morgan also featured on an episode of the Muppet Show www.youtube.com...
  10:23am JakeGould:

@KrysO: Exactly. But hey, what do I know.
Avatar 10:24am mb:

oh Jaimie Branch. Maybe i delay turning myself in to the police until this afternoon.
Avatar 10:24am Chris from DC:

Wow, this.
Avatar 10:24am TDK60:

this stuff should be climbing the WFMU charts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am steveo:

could have used another 20 minutes of this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am coelacanth∅:

Oscar, anyone who's worked with the public -or gets out of the house now & then, knows there's nothing unbelievable about your tales. especially in specific markets, like book stores; health food stores, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am steveo:

oh good, it's still going
Avatar 10:26am TDK60:

..are these folks tryin' to whip us into a frenzied trance?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am coelacanth∅:

JG -1.
Avatar 10:27am Chris from DC:

Into the Bandcamp wish list that goes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am The Oscar:

@coelacanth Oh, for sure. I went on to work at an actual record store for many years, which had a similar (and slightly overlapping) rogue's gallery, but B&N had a special breed.
  10:29am JakeGould:

@coelacanth∅: Can you clarify your -1? Me asking about bands or me +1ing KrysO’s comment about trolls on the chat-comments thing-a-ma-jig.
  10:30am JakeGould:

@coelacanth∅: “Oscar, anyone who's worked with the public—or gets out of the house now & then—knows there's nothing unbelievable about your tales.” This is really obnoxious for no reason. Oscar’s tales are valid and unique.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am coelacanth∅:

yeah the health food stores had their own special breed as well.
  10:32am brick layer:

feelin this one
  10:32am JakeGould:

Jake - "you *think* this is really obnoxious, for no reason".
  10:36am Listener Gregory:

I looked it up, and the Turiya song by Cyrille et al. was written by Smith. You're welcome.
  10:36am JakeGould:

@coelacanth∅: Look, not all of us can be as world experienced as you.
  10:36am JakeGould:

@TheOscar: It’s really amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am The Oscar:

@JG I think coel's comment was in response to poo-mania's earlier comment about potential doubt. It's all good :)
  10:37am randyfrommichigan:

the current song album cover looks like my view today ... well without the mountains :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am steveo:
