A two-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Rich in Washington:

Hi all. Let yourself in and make yourself at home. Please let the cat in if you hear her scratching at the door.
Avatar 6:59pm Martinibomb:

My cat has been next to the speaker all day listening
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm Rich in Washington:

I'm recovering from a flu shot this week that's knocked me for a loop. If I sound low energy and half dead, that's because I am!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm Rich in Washington:

Oh. I made this show specifically for cats!
Hi Martinibomb! Thanks for tuning in!
Avatar 7:01pm Mr Fab:

Another quite thoroughly NON crappy show, Don-O.
Avatar 7:01pm Don-O:

RIGHT. The switch has been made!! Let 'er RIP, RIch!!
Avatar 7:01pm Martinibomb:

Oh shit! Yeah I fainted about 10mins after I got a flu shot back in October. Was not fun! Sorry Rich
Avatar 7:01pm Don-O:

Brave cat, btw!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Rich in Washington:

Hi Don-O! Loved your show today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Rich in Washington:

Hi Mr. Fab!
Avatar 7:02pm Martinibomb:

Don-Os show was very relaxing today. I love scratchy record sounds
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Otis Fodder:

2 cats are in the room, sleeping. They slept through Total Radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Rich in Washington:

i extracted this track years ago and have always called it Monkey Frenzy for some reason.
Avatar 7:03pm Don-O:

Thanks, Rich!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm Rich in Washington:

Hi Otis! Your show was fun today!
Avatar 7:04pm Mr Fab:

yeesh, sorry to hear about what condition your condition is in, Rich. If you're too sick to do a show, it's not worth killing yourself over! (Well, unless it's a *really* good show...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm Rich in Washington:

I need to do guest shows. My radio room's a bit cramped, though. But could add to the fun...
Avatar 7:05pm TimmMcCoy:

HELLLOOOOO PLANET EARTH! I needs my Lung Butter!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm Rich in Washington:

Timm with two Ns! Hi! Thanks for tuning in!
Avatar 7:06pm TimmMcCoy:

Im Always here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm Rich in Washington:

I'm actually fine, Mr. F! Thanks, though. Just really run down feeling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm Rich in Washington:

M's I mean. Stupid stubby fingers!
Avatar 7:07pm Don-O:

I don't think I could have guests in my "radio room" as the city I live in is kinda small.
Avatar 7:07pm TimmMcCoy:

I have listened to WFMU now for 30 years. Every aspect of the station and substations are the best that radio has to offer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Rich in Washington:

This is probably my favorite David Thomas album.
Avatar 7:07pm Don-O:

I hope you're feeling better up there, Rich!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm Rich in Washington:

Oh. Much better! Thanks!
Avatar 7:10pm Mr Fab:

Thanks Timm, I appreciate that.
Avatar 7:12pm TimmMcCoy:

Ive been in the radio biz for 44 years now. DJ everything from Commercial, college, pirate, internet (still) and this is the most eclectic and open minded station I have ever heard. Just clean, simple expression!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm Rich in Washington:

This was sort of hippie cult music made by ex-pat Americans in the UK in the early 80s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Linda Lee:

first time listener here, Rich, after 30 years loving fmu! i'm thrilled!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Rich in Washington:

I think they used one of those weird looking Serge Modulars, for you gearheads.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Rich in Washington:

Hi Linda Lee! Thank you so much for tuning in! I hope you like it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm Linda Lee:

so far so good! :-)
Avatar 7:16pm TimmMcCoy:

I subscribed to the RSS so its always available to me. Your library is SUPER MEGA SWELL!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm Rich in Washington:

I love this record so much.
Avatar 7:16pm TimmMcCoy:

AUDIO DRUGS!
Avatar 7:17pm Mr Fab:

Hi Linda, This channel's only been on for barely 3 months. Still finding an audience. But everything's archived, like the rest of WFMU's programming.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Rich in Washington:

Thanks, Timm! Glad you're digging it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Linda Lee:

beautiful!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Rich in Washington:

I'm glad you've found us, Linda Lee! We've had fun conversations on the other stream's shows.
Avatar 7:18pm Mr Fab:

"Super Mega Swell"! Ha, thx, THERE'S a quote for the promos!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Linda Lee:

yes! always fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm Rich in Washington:

The cover of this record is really funny. Not sure if he was serious or not. Sadly, my copy is in a generic sleeve but I'm on the prowl for a less hammered copy with cover.
  7:20pm JtotheK:

Digging these sensual dream sounds. Within more sensual dream sounds. Saucy. Hi everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm Rich in Washington:

Avatar 7:20pm Mr Fab:

Speaking of promos, I'm seeing the Flesh Eaters tomorrow night - maybe I can get John Doe, Dave Alvin, Chris D, et al to say something. If any of you all meet interesting people, ask for a station ID, I'll stick 'em in the stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm Rich in Washington:

Thanks, JtotheK! Glad you like it and thanks for joining us!
Avatar 7:21pm Mr Fab:

ha ha, well it's as cool as you can possibly look rockin a key-tar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm Linda Lee:

feel a bit like i've found the secret back room at the club .. :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm Rich in Washington:

yes. Nothing like either side of his record. I suspect it may have been tongue in cheek.
Avatar 7:23pm Mr Fab:

Linda we're like the weekend detention crowd. Don't tell your parents you're associating with us!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm Rich in Washington:

Linda Lee: That is exactly the aesthetic of this station. Totally!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm Rich in Washington:

HA! We all have attitude problems. They say we better straighten out and fly right, whatever that means!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm Linda Lee:

i'm very pleased with myself then :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm Rich in Washington:

SOMEONE GETS US!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm Rich in Washington:

Speaking of which... This next bit gets a bit naughty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm Kat in Chicago:

Nice to see you here LL! I've been spending a fair amount of time in the Jungle Room, but mostly on archives.
Avatar 7:26pm Martinibomb:

Super cool set today! As always you baaastaaard :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm Linda Lee:

hi Kat! i cannot believe i'm hearing the sounds i would play on the radio myself.
Avatar 7:26pm TimmMcCoy:

Man I not only get it, but am infecting others with it too. Radio Goo Goo! Like I said "It's Super Mega Swell!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm Rich in Washington:

Thanks, Martinibomb!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm Rich in Washington:

Hi Kat! Thanks for tuning in! Glad you're digging the archives, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Rich in Washington:

Spread Sheena's Jungle Room like the measles!
Avatar 7:28pm Mr Fab:

"I just don't understand you Sheeaa Jungle Room people. Why can't you be more like those other stations and play nice boys like U2 and Coldplay? Your mother is worried sick."
Avatar 7:28pm TimmMcCoy:

OH BABY!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Otis Fodder:

Okay, I'm up off the floor now, been staring at the celing with a cat on each side for over an hour. This Mort/Z album is so good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Rich in Washington:

Sorry if any of you are listening at work. That's just how we roll!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Webhamster Henry:

Hey you didn't say we needed to have an assistant here to listen to this show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Rich in Washington:

Hey, Otis! How's that floor?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm Linda Lee:

this synth noodling behind the breaths just kills me.
Avatar 7:29pm TimmMcCoy:

Its getting warm in here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm Kat in Chicago:

Otis, are you okay?
Avatar 7:29pm Don-O:

Some one at the station is passing out there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm Otis Fodder:

It was good but the cats got up first and so we are listening and playing now watching the snow fall like crazy outside in Montreal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm Webhamster Henry:

I'm going to have to chill out with an environment record after "J" is done.
Avatar 7:30pm Martinibomb:

My Parents would HATE Sheena's Jungle Room -- of that I am certain. I sometimes wonder if I got into odd ball music to annoy my parents. My dad literally told me once, "Why can't you listen to the same music as everyone else?" Lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm Kat in Chicago:

We're supposed to be in blizzardland already but it hasn't hit yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm Rich in Washington:

Ha, Webmaster Henry. Hopefully not too steamy...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm Otis Fodder:

I'm grand Kat. Don-O's show made me wanna zone out and listen to teh crazy voices. + cats will sleep through anything.
Avatar 7:30pm Mr Fab:

Ha, I have that Sensous Woman album. really should digitize it, and chop out some samples. Goes well with all those Xavier Hollander samples Georgy was playing this past Wednesday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm Rich in Washington:

i found this at a Salvation Army, of all places.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm Linda Lee:

frankly, hanging out with cats on a snowy night in Montreal sounds quite heavenly.
Avatar 7:31pm Mr Fab:

This is another set that would go well in the planetarium up on the roof of Sheena's Jungle Room.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm Kat in Chicago:

Doesn't it LL? I have recently fallen in love with Montreal. Only been there in August though :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm Rich in Washington:

My parents have never ever heard me do a show. I think they're scared because of the type of music I listened to as a teenager.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm Otis Fodder:

It so is. Food. Cats. Soft lighting. WFMU. And when I say, okay, let's go to bed, it's 2 cats and Otis with snow falling. The little things wash away all the other life stress and anxiety. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm Otis Fodder:

I adore Montreal. 10 years here now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm Linda Lee:

i've never been, sorry to say. i'd best work on that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm Otis Fodder:

Rich - That was a really great mix/set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm Kat in Chicago:

I don't have the patience for Salvation Army digging any more, alas. Still have my fave find which was Jack Van Impe's "Marked For Death: Will America Survive?"
Avatar 7:34pm Martinibomb:

@Rich same here also I think they are just completely uninterested. My Dad just likes the Eagles... period.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm Kat in Chicago:

That was a very cool set
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm Rich in Washington:

Thanks, Otis! That means a lot to me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm Otis Fodder:

Oh god, the Van Impe records. Here too, I rarely go out to thrifts as it's time... but I vicariously live through friends who frequent often and once in a while I get the itch and go with.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm Rich in Washington:

been listening to lots of spacey music lately.. Mainly drawn back into it by Tangerine Dream's Phaedra, since my wife and I watched Bandersnatch, believe it or not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm Otis Fodder:

Rich - I have the Z Mort record and used to have the Connie one and I always thought about doing that mix together and never did... so thank you for taking that off my mental plate fellow record nutter. :)
Avatar 7:36pm Mr Fab:

ha, hey Kat, i chopped out a bunch of funny samples from a Jack Van Impe album for the Sheena stream! "From Nightclubs to Christ." Him ranting about commies trying to infect us with homosexuality and rock n roll music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm Otis Fodder:

Oh wow, this 10". Finders, yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm Rich in Washington:

I finally found THE ONE Van Impe record that has all those desired Negativland samples. I didn't know which one it was, so bought every GODDAMN Van Impe record I found. It's painful to listen to them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm Linda Lee:

i've loved thrifting for as long as i could walk in with my own money. it's been quite a while though. my understanding is that many stores are cashing in on their own treasures once they see what similar items sell for online. that's a shame.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm Otis Fodder:

Rich - I liked the Bandersnatch episode a lot. But then again, I was nuts over Choose Your Own Adventure books as a kid in like what was that, 1980 or 1981.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm Kat in Chicago:

Ooh I hope I catch that on the stream Mr. Fab. I've heard samples from the one I have used... somewhere? Stuff about the MC5 advocating "open sex on every street corner" and how awful rock'n'roll is in general.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm Rich in Washington:

Yes. and Goodwill corp is sort of killing all independent thrifts, at least in my town.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm Linda Lee:

good Lord, Mr Fab, is that what happened to me?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm Otis Fodder:

Linda - Prices totally have gone up. I avoid Value Village. Plus, living in the city it's all about timing, if I lived out in the country or burbs, I bet I'd have a lot more finds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm Linda Lee:

this is so discouraging! there's nothing quite like pulling a gem from the dreck at a thrift store, for no money.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm Otis Fodder:

I haven't been to a Goodwill in years, but we have Value Village and Salvation here and another called Renaissance (which is the best of the 3).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm Rich in Washington:

I did like our Value Village for 7" records, but they've all closed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm Linda Lee:

what's happening out here in the country is that what might go to the thrift store in the past is now going to ebay ..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm Otis Fodder:

Blue Sunshine - Love the soundtrack and the movie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm Linda Lee:

terribly awkward post there, sorry.
Avatar 7:42pm Martinibomb:

i don't think I've found anything I wanted at a thriftstore in at least 10 years. it's all crap.. and not good crap. But prior to that.. I'd say maybe half my record collection came from 2nd hand stores
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm Otis Fodder:

That's it. Different time for digging for sure.
Avatar 7:43pm TimmMcCoy:

I love the Value Village for always giving me their 7" every week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm Rich in Washington:

yes. That's what Goodwill does, which is why you suddenly couldn't find any decent records there. That and the newbie hipster influx of record buyers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm Rich in Washington:

Have you seen this film? It's incredible. That's where today's gif comes from.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm Linda Lee:

goddamn it!
Avatar 7:44pm Martinibomb:

I haven't seen it.. been meaning to watch it for years
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Otis Fodder:

The bulk of my finds come from digger/seller friends or a shop locally who puts aside odd things for me. I hit a shop every 2 weeks or so these days locally. My heavy digging days of going out in the 80s/90s are behind me now. Home with the cats ya know. Old man walkin'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Rich in Washington:

It's not great, but so goddamn odd. Music's really good, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm Kat in Chicago:

It's nice to have a place where they know what you like and they save stuff for you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm Rich in Washington:

Boom Wow Records in Portland, a record store specializing in R&B 7"s used to put peculiar records aside for me. I loved them. They were awesome.
  7:46pm JtotheK:

Re: Z Lovers - I’ve probably mentioned before but will again — my bro in law was over one afternoon and I put that record on to listen to. My wife’s cousin came over later, during peak moaning track - and was quite puzzled, thought maybe she was interrupting a private moment. Excellent record!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm Otis Fodder:

Also helps that I do the website for the shop. Barter!
Avatar 7:47pm Martinibomb:

I had a friend who worked at a store that closed. He'd hold stuff for me plus give me a good discount. When it closed he was like come grab all these 78s we got.. which i did.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm Otis Fodder:

Ha! That's great JK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm Linda Lee:

this was actually true of our town recycling center here in the catskills. under one man's management it actually became a truly fantastic free store. just amazing. whenever vinyl came in he'd hold it for me. superb.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm Linda Lee:

this was totally gratis, since if we didn't take stuff away the town would have to pay to have it hauled.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm Rich in Washington:

That's hilarious, JtotheK! I had a similar experience when I brought that Mort Garson record home. I had to show it to my housemates so that they didn't think I was watching a synth-scored porn in the other room.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm Otis Fodder:

Yep, when you have nice down-to-earth non-pretentious laid back mofo's at a record (or book) shop it's killer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm Otis Fodder:

I want the Scarfolk book!
Avatar 7:52pm TimmMcCoy:

soundcloud.com...
Avatar 7:53pm Martinibomb:

ohh gawd I love Dockstader sooo much
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm Rich in Washington:

Me too, Otis! Why don't I have it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm Rich in Washington:

I have tons of Dockstader. I did a really long show on him on KBOO when he died.
Avatar 7:55pm Martinibomb:

I love that he worked in animation.. storyboards editing sound etc..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm Rich in Washington:

I got this Xerophonics CD from Don Joyce. He sent it to me shortly after it came out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm Linda Lee:

this music would be a fantastic soundtrack to a video by Sholim. do you know him? www.instagram.com...
  7:57pm JtotheK:

Enjoyed the tunes, thanks Rich! Cheers everybody.
Avatar 7:57pm Mr Fab:

We'd been having all kinds of technical issues this week, so glad today's programming went off without a hitch. thanks to all the "super mega swell" DJs!
Avatar 7:57pm Martinibomb:

damn that went by so fast. Thanks again Rich. Can't wait for next weeks episode
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm Rich in Washington:

YAY! With nary a hitch!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm Rich in Washington:

I'll have to check that out, Linda Lee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm Rich in Washington:

Thanks, JtotheK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm Otis Fodder:

Cheers Rich and everyone, have a great evening/weekend!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm Kat in Chicago:

Yep, nice afternoon in the Jungle Room. Only caught part of Otis's show so I have to go back to that one. But great programming today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm Linda Lee:

of course it did! :-)
Avatar 7:58pm Mr Fab:

The Sheena stream plays all kinda of kooky crazy stuff. 24/7, so dont' go no wheres! Next live shows: Monday. See y'all at the Record Roulette Club
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm Rich in Washington:

Thanks for listening everybody! I had fun and I hope you did too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm Rich in Washington:

BYE!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm Linda Lee:

fabulous. thanks Rich!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Rich in Washington:

Thanks Linda Lee! Glad you could make it!
