Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm
Ike:

A surprisingly good instrumental section in this one! Wow, lots of (that era's predecessor to) AutoTune applied here to make it sound like he can sing. Have you guys heard this bozo croaking on any of those wretched Dead boots that Jeff C. plays on Sunday nights? He's awful. It's straight-up Incorrect Music singing. The music is sometimes good, though.
  4:14pm
judy from croton:

Thanks hon. Lil too much mortality last year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm
Ike:

To be clear, I mean that Garcia is awful, not Jeff C. Everything else Jeff C. plays is amazing. The Dead is the only thing that spoils it. The rotten decaying carcass marring the beautiful field of poppies, much like that moldering idiot Don Felder who pollutes Garbage Time every week. Yeah, I said it! I went there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm
coelacanth∅:

Ike yes Garcia's singing was terrible much of the time (though maybe 1/40th as abominable as Weir's almost always was) i very much doubt they used autotune on this album. (and Garcia played everything except the drums, by the way, i think)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm
Irwin:

Ike, your cantankerous opinionizing will always have a home on my playlists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm
coelacanth∅:

most of what Jeff plays is later (mid-late 70s and later) too. Jerry's voice was already failing as he got sicker and sicker by then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm
coelacanth∅:

hey,what about MY cantankerous opinionizing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm
Ike:

Thanks Irwin! But I'm worried I'm getting repetitive. I need new material. What else can I attack? For instance, nobody here plays Whitney Houston, and there's no Styx or Starcastle lately because CP isn't allowed to pick his own music anymore. Oh, the humanity.

@coelacanth∅, ugh, if he was sick, then maybe that makes me sound more assholish (asshole-ish?) than even I'd prefer.
Avatar 4:24pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The irony of the Dead doing an end-run (ugh sports metaphor) around the Music Biz only to become an Institution that Jerry's spirit rebelled against being the center of...They still have yet to be fully integrated into the Oh-fficial Narrative of Rawk History...
Avatar 4:26pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& the irony that for all of Punk's blather about Anarchy - it's the Dead who comes closer than any band to creating an Alternative Society...
Avatar 4:27pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I always think - what if - say - KingCrimson had played that much ?!?!...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm
coelacanth∅:

you didn't sound assholish to me.
but he had diabetes and as he got more and more obese and did dumbass drugs like coke the complications of his blood sugar grew.
- anyway, after Pigpen checked out, he was the best they had. his vocal quality wasn't great but he could sing in tune on his good days, unlike anyone else in the group.
Avatar 4:32pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

They sure sang pritty on 'American Beauty' - which I think lacks not one thing that qualifies a masterpiece. When they sang 'what a long strange trip' on it - it had only been ~five years...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm
coelacanth∅:

Erika W ☆ ... new to me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm
ɨkɛ:

Coke?!? Jesus. They could've just hired a singer! Maybe even... (gasp) a lady!!! Ha ha, yeah right. Or hire somebody like Y. Bhekhirst! Now *that* would've been a properly strange trip. Nope, they just let him keep croaking along like a mentally-disabled frog after getting hit by a baseball bat. SAD!
Avatar 4:36pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...wull - now yer phrasing like Donald Drumpf - but you're pretty much correct...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm
Michael 98145:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm
coelacanth∅:

Rabbit yeah that album sounds good. far from my favorite, but well-produced. Weir i think still was cautious about his singing and didn't suck that bad yet. it seemed that the more sure he got about his singing (yelling, really) the worse he got.
(my favorite album is "vintage dead", followed closely by "san francisco's grateful dead")
