Dave, nice surprise to hear ya here.

Hello Dave.

Was expecting to hear DJ Jonathan Herweg

Morning, friends and neighbors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am fred:

Good morning Dave and all
Avatar 9:04am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Primitive air is pretty awesome. It sounds like a punk Pink Floyd. Driving, droney, kinda groggy yet wilder than PF. Wow. Dave Mandl, I like your show already!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am George of Troy:

Morning, Dave! Nice surprise to hear you filling in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am Webhamster Henry:

Good morning Dave!

How to sum up this past year...can one even attempt?

oh hi, good morning... good to hear you

Yay, Linda Perhacs!

Linda Perhacs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Webhamster Henry:

Parallelograms is still very impressive!
Avatar 9:10am TDK60:

Linda P. new to me; been around?
Avatar 9:11am Dave Mandl:

Oh yeah, that's a storied record, big favorite here at FMU forever.
Avatar 9:12am TDK60:

New, and old, discoveries every day here at WFMU!
  9:14am Listener Robert:

Hi, Dave, don't think I've checked in since moving to Sussex Co. NJ 2.5 yrs. ago. August last year I visited John P. in Columbia SC for the eclipse.
Avatar 9:14am Dave Mandl:

Welcome, @Robert. Thanks for joining the party.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Ken From Hyde Park:

I guess JA went off to try to wake up Suzie personally. Welcome, Dave Mandl!
  9:19am David in London:

Great opening set DM.
Avatar 9:20am Bob from Millburn:

Good morning, Dave. It's good to hear you back on the radio.

Good day, all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am sphere:

hello folks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am BLCKDGRD:

Daylight Echo!
Avatar 9:23am northguineahills:

Parallelograms, one of the few LPs I have on vinyl and cd....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am sphere:

Parallelograms is such a great album.
Avatar 9:24am TDK60:

One thing I like about Dave's show is, the sets are a shorter length, about 20 min. Some WFMU shows the sets last 45 m. -1 hr; I lose track of what was what. (In the days before the
playlist/comments it was more a problem.) I prefer the 20-25
min set.
Avatar 9:27am Dave Mandl:

Hey BLCKDGRD, northguineahills, sphere, Bob from M, David in L, Ken from HP.
Avatar 9:27am Dave Mandl:

@TDK60: Short attention span.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Ike:

Agreed, @TDK60! When I first started listening to FMU circa 1993-94, that was more of an issue. It was much easier to identify things Dave played than things other DJs with longer sets played, especially if they back-announced back-to-front instead of front-to-back. Back then, I think Dave posted his playlists to Usenet! Ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Webhamster Henry:

I have a dub of Parallelograms on DAT that Irene Trudel made for me in the difficult to share things days of underground music distribution.
Avatar 9:29am Dave Mandl:

@Ike: I did!
Avatar 9:30am TDK60:

Don't worry DJ Dave, I'm "relaxed and paying attention." (Byrds- "5D")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am adampsyche:

I had to play Neil Rolnick to remind myself that it is Friday so just tuning in but this is nice
Avatar 9:33am TDK60:

Webhamster Henry: you have/had a DAT tape player?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Webhamster Henry:

I do TASCAM DA-30 - it needs a little work though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Webhamster Henry:

I think I've copied all my DATs by now anyway - they were mostly digital backups of stuff from my late lamented 4-track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am sphere:

Technology is still pretty amazing. I have WFMU blaring out through Apple TV into my flat-screen speakers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Ike:

DAT? Why not MiniDisc or Digital Compact Cassette?!
Avatar 9:36am northguineahills:

I dj w/ cassettes, but, yes, it's a PITA, as you have to pre-cue the track beforehand. (I used Minidiscs a few months ago).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Webhamster Henry:

DJ Chris T. was a Mini-disk fan.
Avatar 9:37am TDK60:

I have a Japanese Panasonic blaster with cassette, radio, CD, and mini-CD. Never used the mini CDs, have several unused.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Webhamster Henry:

3" CDs - a solution looking for a problem!
Avatar 9:38am Dave Mandl:

I was a heavy minidisc user. They were also very popular in the UK at one time, more than in the US.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am panix user #10421:

Coincidentally, a little bit ago, I looked at one of Dave's playlists that looked like that was from usenet... The first "new style" is from December 30, 2001. It's funny how primitive the year 2000 seems in some ways now.

(I'm gonna tell Tony Coulter what you said about cassettes. JK, I'm not.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am sphere:

Minidisc maybe, but 3" CD was always weird.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am melinda:

Morning Dave! Nice to hear you here.
Avatar 9:40am Dave Mandl:

Hey @melinda. Thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am fred:

I used to have a minidisk player and I loved the fact that it had a line input (very convenient to record LP/tape to it). I still miss that. Someone grabbed it from my pocket and ran a few years ago. Not sure what he could do with it, I bet he thought it was a phone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am steveo:

Dave one more question, and then I'll shut up. Are your archives intentionally not available on the Android app? I don't see them there.
Avatar 9:42am Dave Mandl:

@steveo: You mean, mine personally? Not sure because I don't use Android, but it could be that it's only people who do a regular show currently.
Avatar 9:42am Dave Mandl:

@steveo: No need to shut up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Sullivan Ballou:

Hi Dave. Lovin' yr selections! Do you have yr own show? If not, you should!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Ike:

Another failed audio technology that's still sputtering along for the moment: HD radio. I have one of those. WQXR-105.9-HD2 (New Sounds radio) is not bad, but I'm sure 99.9% of listeners stream that on the Internet.
Avatar 9:44am TDK60:

..on that Japanese Panasonic, I couldn't record FMU shows onto mini-CD, as Japanese FM bandwith goes from 76 to 90! (I could record WBGO or WKCR shows.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am steveo:

Yes, World of Echo playlists. I see many other "fill-ins" listed there, and you did one last week... (Thanks, I usually feel self-conscious about blabbering.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Webhamster Henry:

BTW, steveo, I'm panix user # 427.
  9:44am Andrew in Etobicoke:

Good morning Dave and everybody else.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am steveo:

you beat dave :) my excuse is i didn't move to nyc until 1995.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Ken From Hyde Park:

There was some chat board discussion the other day how Norway was the first country to switch from FM to digital radio.
Avatar 9:46am Dave Mandl:

@Sullivan: Thanks! I've done a regular show here for ages, but have been off the regular schedule for...maybe a little over a year? Check the archives if you're interested.
Avatar 9:48am TDK60:

..the playlists for Dave go back to Dec. 18, 1993!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am steveo:

henry, i don't see 427 in /etc/passwd; are you the henry with a palindrome in your plan?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Webhamster Henry:

Well I lied , i'm really user 616. That was my billing #, incase you'd like to pay my Panix bill.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am steveo:

i thought maybe it was the billing number :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am dale:

mike pinder - mellotron master
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Webhamster Henry:

Mandl is 1453.
Avatar 9:53am TDK60:

..time for some early King Crimson? (mellotron)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am steveo:

yeah, i wasn't going to divulge that personal datum haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am YETI BOB:

Hooray for Mellotron!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am YETI BOB:

There's a new synth that has the "Mellotron" name on it, but it doesn't use tapes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Webhamster Henry:

Let's do the Panix Internet treasure hunt!
Folks - this predates Altavista, we had to use Archie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am YETI BOB:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am steveo:

my billing # is 9977, impressively 4-digit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am dale:

when the moody blues toured pinder said the tapes would jam or come off the spool during performance so they just started piping the mellotron parts in as prerecorded.
Avatar 9:58am Dave Mandl:

@dale: Hahaha.
Avatar 9:58am TDK60:

dale: huh!: mellotron-tape-run-out in the middle of a Moody B. blissed out psych tune!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Ike:

@steveo@9:44, I don't see World of Echo archives under Archives & Podcasts on the iPhone app either. (Also not listed as Dave Mandl.) Must be an oversight. I also don't see anything ancient, only current fill-ins et al. (i.e. no Ning Nong, no Douglas Wolk, that would be too unwieldy) and Dave must've gotten accidentally classified as one of those.
Avatar 9:58am Dave Mandl:

@YETI BOB: There's also a Mellotron guitar pedal!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am steveo:

@Ike Ah. Makes sense.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Webhamster Henry:

Happy Kwanzaa, everyone!
  10:16am Andrew in Etobicoke:

Hi Melinda.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am YETI BOB:

nice track! ("I'm leaving")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am melinda:

hi Andrew!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Doug:

The Clash did seem like it would be out of place
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am melinda:

I love this Tindersticks, have a box set of their film scores for Claire Denis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am YETI BOB:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am melinda:

I don't think I've heard anyone refer to them as just "Eagles", even fans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am steveo:

I can fly higher than an eagle,
Avatar 10:26am Dave Mandl:

@melinda: I want that box set! We don't even have a copy here at FMU.
  10:29am Andrew in Etobicoke:

I saw the Tindersticks and they were great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am melinda:

@dave my other favorite is the 36 Rhums soundtrack, which is also a good film and what put Tindersticks on my radar.
Avatar 10:32am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Which song has Mellotron? Big fan of King Crimson here.
Avatar 10:34am Rev. Turnip Druid:

HOLY CRAP, Mandl's on. All is well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Ike:

I wonder if that was actually about Mary Whitehouse, an infamous reactionary who constantly attacked the BBC for being too permissive. She even went after them for showing footage of people being freed from a Nazi concentration camp. She was a real scumbag.
Avatar 10:35am Dave Mandl:

@melinda: Oh man, I need to get that.
Avatar 10:35am Rev. Turnip Druid:

ALSO: caps-lock hooray for madman Petit.
Avatar 10:36am Dave Mandl:

@Ike: Yes, Mary Long is a combination of Mary Whitehouse and Lord Longford (?), who ran a crusade against dirty rock and roll music in the '70s.
Avatar 10:36am Dave Mandl:

@Rev. TD: Thank you kindly.
Avatar 10:39am Dave Mandl:

@Andrew: Damn, you saw (the) Tindersticks? I'm jealous.
Avatar 10:42am HollyT:

Morning, Dave! I've been up for about half an hour and remembered your show was on, yay
Avatar 10:44am Dave Mandl:

@Holly: Hey, welcome! Still an hour+ to go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Handy Haversack:

Thanks for clearing up Mary Long. There was much discussion around the house.
Avatar 10:51am HollyT:

Mary Whitehouse notably has an entire verse dedicated to her in PF's Pigs All Three of Them
Avatar 10:52am TDK60:

wild neil: first 2 albums of King C. have mellotron..
Avatar 10:52am HollyT:

Lol, I meant "Pigs: Three Different Ones" of course
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Webhamster Henry:

The Government is shutdown too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am ɛɨkɛɨ:

I'm in the office but not too many people are here. The subway, PATH, etc. were ghost towns.
Avatar 10:54am Dave Mandl:

@Holly: Yep, that's her. I once saw an autobiography of Lord Longford where he regretted getting involved in that whole mess.
Avatar 10:55am Dave Mandl:

@WMH: Duh, right, I totally forgot about the govt shutdown.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am YETI BOB:

@Wild Neil||Peace All : take a peep at www.planetmellotron.com... it lists every K.C. song with mellotron!
  10:55am Nate K:

Hey, Dave. Just got here. What percentage of rock 'n' roll have you hit thus far? I see I missed Deep Purple.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am fred:

I'm at work, but there are not many people here today. No bosses, which means I can actually get much more done than usual
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am YETI BOB:

(I love "Easy Money" from Lark's Tongues in Aspic)
Avatar 10:57am TDK60:

..yeah, lots of folks off, but there're still folks workin' too: the working poor, restaurant workers, bus drivers, bodegas, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am YETI BOB:

(Also "Fallen Angel" from Red)
Avatar 11:01am Dave Mandl:

@Nate: Hey! Trying to keep it under 2%, but you know, the flesh is weak.
Avatar 11:01am TDK60:

Yeti B> Fallen Angel is heavy-dark.
Avatar 11:02am Dave Mandl:

@TDK60: True, and a lot of people (involuntarily) unemployed, which is no joke.
Avatar 11:06am TDK60:

...and let's hope the folks out at the aging nuke power plant ain't drinkin' rum in their egg nog. heh..
Avatar 11:08am TDK60:

...wow, a new one from Tim Hecker; my fave electronic musician these days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am TomDash:

Hey Dave - great show! Digging the morning jams, goes great with coffee! Steve Hillage, nice! Been on a huge Gong kick recently...will likely throw some into one of my fill-ins this weekend!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Passaic River Blues:

That Hillage was incredible, and sounded even better coming out of Hecker.
Avatar 11:18am TDK60:

Hillage kept the psych-guitar flame going thru the years.
  11:19am Deep Creep:

Glad to hear you back! Miss the world of echo
Avatar 11:23am Dave Mandl:

@Deep: Thanks! Always a pleasure to be here.
Avatar 11:24am Dave Mandl:

@Passaic: Yeah, that's a great Hillage LP. Hadn't heard it in a very long time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Handy Haversack:

I am listening through the computer, but my partner also left the radio on in the bath room, at the other end of the apartment. The show is pretty wild with a faint, attenuated, five-second-in-the-future echo
Avatar 11:26am Dave Mandl:

@Handy: Time travel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Handy Haversack:

It's the wave of the future!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Wendy del Formaggio:

Hey Dave! I'm just tuning in now. Nice to see/hear you here. Any future fill-ins coming up?
  11:29am Nate K:

I like this Donald Alexander Strachan a lot. New to me.
Avatar 11:30am Dave Mandl:

@Wendy: Hey! Nothing scheudled right now, but probably in the not-too-distant future.
Avatar 11:31am Dave Mandl:

@Nate: It's really good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Krys O.:

Avatar 11:43am TDK60:

Krys, had no idea you DJed here..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Krys O.:

Thanks, Dave. That's kind of you. Hey, Wendy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Krys O.:

@TDK60--I was on the schedule 1985-1991 and I worked in the office as a record librarian from 1981-1983. Terry Folger and I were co-music directors for a brief time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Wendy del Formaggio:

Ha! I love when DJs do the "stage whisper" on a mic break. It's an effect I sometimes use on my own show.
  11:49am Andrew in Etobicoke:

Hello Krys O!
Avatar 11:50am Dave Mandl:

@Wendy: Oh! No one was supposed to hear that!
Avatar 11:51am briania:
