A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

  9:02am Dropof Goldensun:

Good morning!
  9:03am Robin Eisgrau:

That's from the Diva soundtrack, yes? Loved the film and the music when I was a teenager. Good to listen to your always awesome show!
Avatar 9:06am Sem:

Own a copy of Diva. Love that film, and all of the music.
Good morning, Trouble, and hello, Modern World dwellers.
  9:14am Shane:

Sucks to be at work! But WFMU will get me through the day!

Good morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Thursday greetings to all. Enjoying the tunes, thanks, Trouble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am melinda:

Morning! I have the Diva soundtrack and VHS too, bummed that I missed la wally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Brian in UK:

Hello Trouble. Hope that you have caught up with the Festive times.
Got an Egon Schiele book, shame it does not cover the last four years of his life so much. Especially as he was really coming into his own with his use of colour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Brian in UK:

Sem, how were the scallops?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Ken From Hyde Park:

Hello and sunshine, folks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Granny Spicy Tuna:

one more hollerdaze tradition smashed on the rocks of feckless freeform!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am EG_Astro:

Good morning Trouble! Good morning everyone.
  Swag For Life Member 9:44am tadpoles:

Agree Trouble....I thought the sound track in "The Favourite" (the title that is driving spellcheck mad) was great. The contrast between the wonderful minimalist sounds to the waves of classical washing the visuals. Neat film.
Avatar 9:45am mb:

Hi DJ Trouble. Hello board
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am ɛɨk:

I saw Mary Queen of Scots because my mom demanded it. It wasn't bad, but we'd watched Roma on Netflix the previous night and by comparison MQOS seemed quite rushed. I'm wary of seeing The Favourite just because I hated The Lobster and it's the same director, though Olivia Colman is always great so that's a point in its favor.
  9:51am Shrunken Planet:

Trouble may not be a year-end list maker, but I am, and she is always on my best DJs list!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Ooh, @Shrunken Planet, are you doing a year-end show this week?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Trouble:

jeffrey, you are too kind!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am sphere:

hullo folks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am melinda:

eik what was wrong with The Lobster? I haven't seen it, just curious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Brian in UK:

We have to wait until NYD for release for The Favourite.

@melinda, The Lobster is not a comfortable film, disconcerting might be the correct word. It might be the case whether you accept the world in which it is set will decide your opinion. There were only us in the cinema when we saw it. Odd, that it was on at a multiplex.
  Swag For Life Member 10:07am tadpoles:

"The Favourite" is based on a true story. Nothing like the "The Lobster" which I enjoyed. Haven't dived into "The Killing of a Scared Deer" which I hear is difficult to take.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Granny Spicy Tuna:

oooh, luscious textures
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am zopa:

Trouble! You are scratching that itch. Thank you! o que se cala
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Passaic River Blues:

Love all the jump-cuts in this Brazilian mélange since Veloso.
Avatar 10:20am Wild Neil||Peace All:

In IMDB the review for The Lobster headline was "unpleasant." If its intent was to depict dating, American style in 2015 or whatever, it is probably correct.
Avatar 10:21am Wild Neil||Peace All:

The Lobster is a dystopian fictional piece set in the near future. All single people must go to The Hotel and find a mate within 45 days or be turned into an animal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Trouble:

obrigada @ passaic river!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Granny Spicy Tuna:

OK, Elza Soares is my new favorite of all time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Rarouse:

Just so good, thank you Trouble!!!
  10:25am Shrunken Planet:

Trouble: I'm not known for my kindness!
Granny Spicy Tuna: probably not, just the usual mess!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Trouble:

@shrunken planet; NOT TRUE!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am sphere:

@ Granny Spicy Tuna - how many favorites of all time do you have?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am ɛɨk:

I'm at work so I can't really get into everything that's wrong with The Lobster. Don't even get me started. Calling The Lobster "uncomfortable" is almost like praising it because it makes it sound like it could be a worthwhile art film. It's as dumb as a Transformers movie. It's set in perhaps the single least realistic world ever seen in any arty film. I kept waiting for some allegorical value to its fantasy world, but there was none. Interesting dialogue? Nope. Characters? Zeroes. Good acting? Eh, the actors have nothing to work with. The description posted by WN is accurate, yet it makes it sound 1000x as interesting as it actually is. Boring, stupid, empty, dull, dumb. I'd rather watch Santa Claus Conquers the Martians again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Shrunken Planet, you know your mess is my favorite!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am steveo:

good morning! been enjoying listening quietly; just here to say hi and click the star on boys :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am ɛɨk:

@WN@10:20, dating sucks, and I've been on bad dates, but I've rarely been on a bad date as bad or as stupid as The Lobster. And none of those lasted 2 hours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Granny Spicy Tuna:

@sphere depends on who topples the others off the top of the heap. Who could beat Elza Soares? She was honored as Brazilian Singer of the Millennium?!?! Seriously. My life just changed.
Avatar 10:32am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Wow eik, ok. I was trying to be neutral. By the way, I saw that movie where the guy dies and he is a literal ghost (bedsheet with holes in it) and his wife binge eats an entire pie. I hated that movie (hate is too strong a word maybe, it implies I felt something. I felt nothing. ) so much, I walked out without a second thought. It was literally the WORST movie I had ever seen, bar none, including that stupid movie about a poet my wife made me sit through once. REALLY REALLY REALLY bad. AVOID!
@eik-I was set up on a blind date, that was actually really good and we got married. Arranged marriages have a certain logic to them in my mind and could work in practice because, quiite often, in India, they do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am sphere:

@ Granny Spicy Tuna - She is awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Priscilla:

We enjoyed The Favourite, especially the break dancing
Avatar 10:34am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Ike-Ghost Story. Do not rent nor download. You can never get that time back!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Granny Spicy Tuna:

I still regret the hours i lost when a friend made me watch "Tiptoes." I will NEVER get them back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Trouble:

omg@priscilla, i was screaming with joy during that scene!
@ike: honestly? isn't there something else you can be doing with your time?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Granny Spicy Tuna:

I am no longer friends with that person. I think that was one of the reasons why.
Avatar 10:39am Wild Neil||Peace All:

I saw Sun Ra at Maxwells in Hoboken. I totally did not appreciate it the way I would now. Still, I felt compelled to go see this very very important artist.
@GSP: Yeah, Tiptoes ok. IMDB review gives it 3/10 stars. UG.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am sphere:

The Tom Cruise movie Oblivion was a disaster. However, it was a make-out movie for me and my date, so it was no problem. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Priscilla:

@Trouble: I keep seeing the red coat with the sword sticking out sauntering in front of me, haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Priscilla:

Sorry if we are leaving out those who have not seen The Favourite...
Avatar 10:43am KenW:

Good Morning Trouble, tuning in late, THANKS for the Sun Ra AND the Louise Bourgeois> LOVE HER
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Granny Spicy Tuna:

When i see a movie as awful as Tiptoes, i suspect that someone in the film industry actually lost a bet.
Avatar 10:43am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Sphere-I actually liked Oblivion. I like cheesy sci fi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am sphere:

@WN - and Oblivion definitely is there. :)
Avatar 10:45am Wild Neil||Peace All:

How did the word "cheesy"come to describe cheap quality? Cheese is NOT cheap by any means!

Nice wormhole to disappear into :-) Has a bit of a Battles vibe me thinks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am tim from champaign:

I watched A Quiet Place the other night. I really dug it. I liked how the film started mid-story and had an abrupt ending. Plus, everything in between was pretty great too.

Dipping my toes in the pool - beautiful show, Trouble. Thanks for the movie chat everyone. You've got me psyched for 'The Favourite'! Saw 'Cold War' last night, which was beautifully shot and scored.

Sing to us, Yasmine!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am ɛɨk:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Webhamster Henry:

Hiya Modern Residents! I've been listening, but interrupted by a little cable service this morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Brian in UK:

Possibly one of my all-time favourites! is Le Grand Meaulnes known in English as The Wanderer directed by Jean-Gabriel Albicocco. Brigitte Fossey stole my heart.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Passaic River Blues:

Trouble shouting "Because of the Shutdown, there are no rules!" elicited a rare laugh from me in the workplace.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Brian in UK:

The only rule is, there are no rules.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Passaic River Blues:

@Brian in UK: never saw the movie, but "Le Grand Meaulnes" is a hell of a novel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am tim from champaign:

I started watching the 1975 Picnic at Hanging Rock. Some of the soundtrack music reminded me of Air's Virgin Suicides soundtrack work.
Avatar 11:41am Sem:

Hello, Brian Away from the keyboard for some time, making beignet.
The scallops were ambrosial, 90 seconds a side in a hot pan w/ a ittle butter and a squeeze of key lime.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Brian in UK:

@PRP you are right. It was made in 1967 so reflects the times (vaseline on the edge of lenses) though it is set in the previous century.
  11:43am Tom in St. Paul:

Utsu – this sounds like Moondog
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, Trouble. Have a Happy New Year. See you in 2019!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Brian in UK:

Sem, there is a confection in these parts called a Butter Bun, not disimilar to beignet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Passaic River Blues:

@Brian: that's very fitting (Vaseline on the edge of the lenses) because, as I recall, Alain-Fournier's narrative has the feeling of an airy fairytale, with time and space telescoped and then elongated in a truly childlike way. I definitely should see that Albicocco adaptation. Thank you for the heads-up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Brian in UK:

@PRB in the modern parlance, very trippy. It is not that easy to find but worth the effort.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Trouble:

thanks for sitting in this morning. happy new year to everyone! see you in 2019, counting down to magic...
