Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

For what it's worth: The last syllable in Françoise is pronounced like "SWAHZ."

I play in Fluxus/Situationist bands, it's not a reaction to anything outside reality.
  12:36pm frenchee:

right you are Brian with a strange "B!" I didn't want to hurt UM's feelings by pointing out that he was masculinizing Françoise--a major feat!

Avatar 12:39pm northguineahills:

Panacea, not to be confused w/ the noise/drill & bass uk group.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm joe:

My personal opinion is not that Canned Heat was a reaction but very lucky that they decided to play the type of music they did in the time that they did.
Avatar 12:40pm Franco Twinkie:

Well put Michael, yes for a group of teenagers in a suburban garage in 1965, The Rolling Stones or Yardbirds might have been the catalyst, but these guys were of a different order altogether.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

this is marvelously haunting
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Uncle Michael:

  12:43pm chresti:

I know Nancy Sinatra did “Lies”— I’m just assuming she did “Who Will Be The Next One in Line”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Uncle Michael:

The Brit blues kids had a "please don't notice we're white" thing going on and seem hung up on authenticity. The Butterfield band headed to left field fast...before there were hippies. And Vcanned Heat...they were just hippies.
  12:44pm chresti:

The bird set—— super!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm joe:

I definatly feel there was a lack of caring of the outside "worlds" opinions as far as Canned Heat went
  12:46pm dan:

I never knew there were so many little birds in music.
Avatar 12:47pm Franco Twinkie:

I was very lucky to meet Korla Pandit at a drive-in movie theater in Azuza California. Into old age, he was still in character.

Avatar 12:50pm northguineahills:

I love Korla Pandit. I dug as an Alabaman, he masqueraded as an Indian. He could tickle the organ ivories (phrasing?)
Avatar 12:51pm northguineahills:

or was it MO, my brain is failing me....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm coelacanth∅:

maybe canned heat were hippies (whatever that is!) but the genuine passion of the blues (especially in Alan Wilson) made them more sincere, in my opinion, than some others who may've been trying harder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm coelacanth∅:

(...i didn't and wish i'd heard whatever was said during the mic break about canned heat)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

So far, Panacea has delivered my favorite Little Bird.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm The Oscar:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

TheOscar—ha ha! Yeah! Lene Lovich has a song by that title.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Uncle Michael:

"Korla" was from St. Louis, yes.
Avatar 12:55pm northguineahills:

@The Oscar: Follow That Bird?: My favrorite part of that movie as a kid was when they showed a map of his wanderings, they only showed small obscure towns, not the large cities.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm The Oscar:

@ngh I should probably revisit that sometime. It was almost certainly the first movie I ever saw (give or take the time my parents took me to see Spinal Tap at the drive-in as an infant).
Avatar 12:57pm βrian:

Edith Piaf would work in this context.
  12:58pm dan:

The next song title you should do is "I Need You". Bands to include that title include, The Beatles, The Kinks, The Walker Brothers and The Who

The Tielman Brothers were one of those wild instrumental Indonesian Rock'n'Roll bands that -based in the Netherlands- conqueered German Clubs in the early 60ies.

  1:30pm dan:

From Indonesia to the Netherlands, that's an odd combination.

Today's country music needs to be thrown in the dump and replaced by the old fashioned country music of the Grand Ol Opry.
  1:46pm dan:

This Hank Williams song was in The Shawshank Redemption.
  1:46pm davefromtoronto:

i like hank better with the drifting cowboys than the studio guys he recorded with.
Avatar 1:47pm Listening Out There:

I heard that four-letter word. Now dialing FCC. One ringy dingy, two ringy dingy...
Avatar 1:48pm northguineahills:

@Jeff: The Mighty Sparrow did "Yellow Bird", originally Haitian. Close enough ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Uncle Michael:

Fuck the FCC. L.O.T.!
Avatar 1:48pm still b/p:

Working on a spoofy thing that includes a version of Hank's Jambalaya and someone involved remarked that it's not "iconic" or really well-known. Oy, whattaya gonna do? And someone said the same thing about "America" from West Side Story. Oy yoy yoy.
Avatar 1:49pm northguineahills:

UM can use all of Dan Carlin's "7 words" on GTDS stream.
Avatar 1:49pm Brian in UK:

@LOT what is the 'hold-on' music?
Avatar 1:49pm Listening Out There:

Oh, tsk. No coal in your Xmas stocking this year, UM....
Avatar 1:50pm Listening Out There:

@still: Sounds like a case of "Their icons are not our icons," eh?
Avatar 1:50pm Jeff Moore:

No FCC radio cussing rules for stream-only shows! UM could be working completely blue if he wanted!
Avatar 1:53pm northguineahills:

Lazy Jim Day has the same accent as my mom. My Dad lost his WV accent, but not my mom. (I never had one, I was out of the state by the time I was two).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm chresti:

I think he does "Yellow Bird" @ngh 1:33
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

My sweetie is fondly recollecting our courtin' days because of that Lazy Jim Day song…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm chresti:

oops! nevermind-owe you a beer @ngh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

My sweetie is now informing me that Lazy Jim's father was named Baldy Bill.
Avatar 1:58pm northguineahills:

@chresti: I realized I had the LP w/ the eponymous name!

Now I have an additional reason to see Cali again!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm chresti:

Lazy and Baldy!
Avatar 1:59pm northguineahills:

well, not eponymous, but entitled, "Yellow Bird".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Asheville Jon:

Avatar 2:01pm still b/p:

@ LOT -- 'zactly. If someone's not familiar and has missed the not-small cultural footprint & persisting references and countless covers of a song, well, fine. But it's a reminder -- in both directions -- about characterizations and expectations...how we stretch individual experience to an assumed more-widely shared awareness or lack of it and what's in the brain-bank.
Avatar 2:03pm northguineahills:

For the last 20 years, UPS wouldn't allow their drivers to take left turns (most hazardous turn), unless it was a dead end, so they would take multiple rights to their destination, They still do so....(well, they're supposed to). (UPS training in college)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Jeff Golick:

How goes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm chresti:

@still b/p tell them to be wise and know their culture

There is many Caribbean folk songs from the mento/calypso/soca genres in the American pop song bool (Ie: the Beach Boys)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm coelacanth∅:

ngh that's interesting. i'm trying to remember a ups truck making a left onto a street and i can, but not where there's a light at a 4-way.

so...do they also train them to not give a shit, and that 2 & 4 are interchangeable?
Avatar 2:15pm Brian in UK:

@ngh, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, no returns.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm The Oscar:

It's like the country Nurse With Wound List!
Avatar 2:16pm βrian:

I've seen UPS trucks taking left turns recently, so they must allow some exceptions.
Avatar 2:17pm northguineahills:

@coel: Basically, if you make a left turn, and get cited for a infraction or accident, you're terminated. I worked there in the regional warehouse while studying their routing algorithms in school (late 90s). Curious coincidence.
Avatar 2:18pm northguineahills:

(studying for my undergrad)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm The Oscar:

"Oscar" is just uncommon enough a name that I still get that weird twinge when I hear it spoken out loud in pop culture.
Avatar 2:20pm northguineahills:

Even more curious, my current office is a block for a UPS warehouse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm coelacanth∅:

i know they're pretty strict to enforce their rules. that's why i figure the ups policy is that it's okay to leave packages at the wrong address; within reach of thieves passing by; in rain; in snow; at the street end of a long driveway...
Avatar 2:22pm northguineahills:

don't be a grouch.....

My father passed away a week and a half ago. Attending the wake was....the UPS driver who'd worked my folks' residential neighborhood route for a couple decades and regarded Mom and Dad as friends he really enjoyed talking to. I wonder if tighter time control of UPS drivers today ever allows more than a quick "hello" relationship.

Nearly 92, occurred suddenly, so no difficulties in treatment, care or family decision-making...like the difficulties everyone has experienced or heard about and which had been described to me -- the very morning of the day I got my own news -- by a friend going through it now with her mom.

Thanks to all for the thoughts.

Jumping awkwardly back onto a way-earlier thread after running some errands... the "Little Bird" calypso song I recall is definitely distinct from "Yellow Bird", with which I'm familiar. Whole different melody and cadence.
