Hi, folks. I had an idea last week that I meant to post on Station Manager Ken's show this morning, but this may be a good a place as any to toss it out: WFMU ringtones. I thought it'd be cool to be able to download from 4 or 5 choices. When your phone rings, any 'FMU listeners in the vicinity could identify another listener.

Then this one starting in 2000?
Avatar @5:47 Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

In 1993 I made a website which had a color scan of my hand. In early 1994 I created my radio show site and also a huge growing list of links to other sites.
Avatar @5:48 Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

The KenzoDB thingy I made that WFMU uses I launched in 2000, yes.
Avatar @5:48 Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

In 1995 I made an automated online version of a bi-weekly newspaper I managed, and also co-created a radio station website.
Avatar Swag For Life Member @5:49 Webhamster Henry:

WFMU's site started as a gopher site on ECHO, and eventually the gopher became part of WFMU's web offerings. Before KenzoDb, I hand formatted a whole lot of playlists here.

My first email was prodigy, back in 1989. I only emailed a friend of mine a few times, and the novelty wore off, as no one else had email. It wasn't until 1993 that I actually started using it again, and then I went to college, where the university gave us a free accountwas mostly used to communicate w/ my professors and classmates. Damn, I was boring. I didn't even make a website until '98 (again, for academic purposes). I found WFMU online in '98 and only my work could handle the tinny sound, so, when I worked late, I would listen to WFMU. Two years later, I would be able to listen terrestrially.
Avatar Swag For Life Member @5:56 Rich in Washington:

I just need to fix that static problem. It's intermittent and somewhat infuriating. Otherwise, it has pretty good fidelity. The other minus, it being such an old phone, there's no speed dial or memory. I must manually redial, like in the old days.
Avatar @5:56 Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I started emailing around 1981. BBS'ing around 1982. Internet emailing starting in 1985
Avatar Swag For Life Member @5:56 Ken From Hyde Park:

I like how the Unix has little two-character commands (rm ls mv, etc.). It's annoying to try to memorize and type out stuff like copyOldFileToNewPlace kind of stuff.

I had WWW on the NeXT (the first browser), and it predated <FORM> and <TABLE> tags. When those showed up .. and the idea that you didn't need reciprocal links, which was a key part of Ted Nelson's concept of hypertext, the web started weaving.
Avatar Swag For Life Member @6:04 Webhamster Henry:

Before there were search engines, Panix used to have an internet search contest. You'd have to pull lists of files off of FTP servers, dig around UUnet, etc.
