This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

It's only frustrating because access to the conversation is limited.

Coel, in 1971 I bought the first VU album for a dollar at Newberry's, a local discount store. When I got it home the sealed album had a 007 soundtrack inside. The following week, my mom took me back to Newberry's to exchange the album. They didn't have any more of the banana record, so I got the first Ultimate Spinach record. I took it home and put it on the turntable. After a few songs my sister and I started laughing so hard we had tears in our eyes. Not long after that I threw it onto the roof of our house.

Franco (@9.18) hahaha! ...kinda like Don Felder trying to play heavy metal or something! like, it must be a joke!
i do like a few tracks though - with reservations.

Since 1969, Rachmaninoff has enjoyed a 180 degree revival. Where once his music was treated, as by Les Baxter, as gussied up pop, it's now respected for its virtuosity and post-Romantic sophistication way beyond mere melody.

so is my dad-a real slippery one

Franco Twinkie:

Flash, Last week when you played TONTO, I googled the album, and when I saw Malcolm Cecil's picture I went WAAA!!! I use to see him at the gym in Pasadena on an irregular basis.

re:Rachmaninoff, what happened in 1969?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm

i wonder if that zodiac album has a song for aquarius with a very prominent pisces rising!

Baxter was really serious, to the point of snobbish, about compostion and art music, a scholar of stravinsky in particular, and it always struck me funny how poppy and simple he went with that record. i love it though

I found the Zodiac album not to long ago at Gimme Gimme in Highland Park. Dan, the owner stocks real good stuff.

Good eeeevening. Any discussion here tonight about Morricone interview that had to be withdrawn by German Playboy after he griped much of it -- including semi-inflammatory remarks --- was bogus? And the journalist has pretty much acknowledged that. Weird.

I think that's the record store Marc Maron used to mention on his podcast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm

very immersive sound space on this record. you can close your eyes and see all around you inside this track

Wow, Dan is still doing Gimme Gimme? He was one of WFMU’s earliest and longtime dealers at our record fair.

Yes, Melinda. Mark goes there a lot.

@b/p I read about that! He had him saying Quentin Tarantino was a cretin, among other things. Not being a huge fan of QT I thought that was kinda funny.
Avatar 9:47pm
Flash Strap:

i like most of his flicks but I agree it is funny and fair to say he is a cretin
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm
coelacanth∅:

i wonder if that story has any relation to Fabio playing a whole Morricone set today
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:48pm
melinda:

@Flash right? I was disappointed when I read on and Morricone denied it.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:49pm
melinda:

@coel sorry I missed that.

Dean:

Nothing in particular in '69. My point was that around that time Rachmaninoff was pop fodder, seemingly doomed to irrelevance as a "real" classical composer. Since then, and based on my fairly regular attention to reviews of an endless stream of new recordings of his work, that focus has shifted. What was once a guilty pleasure -- the second piano concerto, for instance -- is no longer a source of shame, pace Uncle Michael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm
coelacanth∅:

Morricone may've had second thoughts about dissing someone in the industry he works within
Avatar 9:51pm
Flash Strap:

that may have as much to do with the overall trend for doing pop and novelty version of "classical" as anything to do with Rachmaninoff in particular
Avatar 9:51pm
still b/p:

Up to you, melinda, to grant an interview, make the definitive declaration on QT, and then reinforce: "I'm melinda, and I approved this message!"

Dan moved out here awhile ago. First he had this little place on York Blvd, then he moved to a bigger place on Figueroa. After you visit Dan, you can walk up the street to Triple Beam for pizza.

Dean:

I don't think so. I think Rachmaninoff is sui generis in this regard. What I would need to support my suspicion is contemporaneous (c. 1969) commentary about recordings of his music by classical critics and aficionados. I don't have that at hand. But my gut feeling -- take it for what it's worth -- is that the pop-ification of Rach at the time was poo-poo'd by many who leveled blame at Rach for not being immune to pop. That's different for, say, Bach or Debussy, whose works were also pop-ified, but the results of which didn't cast a shadow on their "real" music.

Right. Debussy survives appropriation (Tomita?). So, to my mind, does Bach, among others.
