Mandarin Duck

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm radioronan:

That was a solid set to start this sat nite. Thanks, Marty. Going to look for that duck tomorrow.
Avatar 10:06pm jillydg:

Radioronan... i am told you need binocs or some kind of telephoto lens to appreciate him.
Avatar 10:08pm jillydg:

I think he may be my father -- who was a lifetime NYer and birder since he was quaranteed from school at 10 with the whooping cough -- come back to life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm radioronan:

Thanks jillydg. I'll be sure to bring some proper scoping gear. It's fall-y to think I will spot him, so I'll just enjoy the leaves turning.
Avatar 10:15pm Marty McSorley:

thx for the link hard to look it up when playing recs. ha but yea that duck is crazy
Avatar 10:18pm Joe D.:

diggin the mini theme of "bands who have done splits w/ Rye Coalition" ha
Avatar 10:19pm coelacanth∅:

i just read wikipedia about mandarin duck and it says the male moults after mating. it then looks like the female which looks a lot like the common wood duck. so i wonder if maybe it never disappeared at all, as people are saying, but was camouflaged among the other ducks
Avatar 10:22pm coelacanth∅:

rest in peace yellow

Avatar 10:33pm Marty McSorley:

Avatar 10:34pm Franco Twinkie:

We don't have ducks al fresco out here. Peacocks yes, ducks rarely. Most of the ducks in the SGV are glazed and hanging headless in the greasy widow of Sam Woo Barbeque.
Avatar 10:36pm coelacanth∅:

mmm one of my favorite chinese take-outs - "camouflage mock duck".
Avatar 10:38pm Franco Twinkie:

Never liked duck myself. To rich and gamey.
Avatar 10:43pm Joe D.:

oh damn RIP Baba Oje
Avatar 10:45pm coelacanth∅:

i've never eaten duck, and it's likely i never will; but there used to be a vegetarian chines restaurant in morristown,nj that had some amazing food. (it's bewildering that they closed shop) my favorite dish there was orange mock duck.
Avatar 10:52pm Franco Twinkie:

Coel, Some friends of mine always have duck when we go to their house for dinner. My bad luck. When wife makes it fancy french style, I can hardly choke it down. When husband chars it black on the grill because he's to busy talking about some obscure art shit and not paying attention, I can tolerate it.
Avatar 10:56pm jillydg:

Post coital or not, the Mandarin Duck has been peacefully hangin' with the run-of-a-muck ducks. He does sport a leg band, which is part of the mystery.
Avatar 10:57pm coelacanth∅:

i've heard that it's greasy. goose even worse, right?
it's funny when we like something more (or tolerate it better) when it's as some would call ruined! when i ate real hot dogs i liked them burnt black. (not that a food snob would have any opinion about that, but...)
Avatar 11:02pm jillydg:

Birders are crazy too Marty, and it's a slippery slope. To learn more look up The Central Park Effect. HBO Documentary
Avatar 11:02pm Franco Twinkie:

Yes, exactly. Eating wrong has always been an area I excel in. I agree about hot dogs. A little char increases there appeal.
Avatar 11:07pm coelacanth∅:

it doesn't work with veggie dogs. if you char them on a grill they turn to rubber.
Avatar 11:10pm Franco Twinkie:

I love grilled vegetables, but this thing you earthlings call a veggie dog, I do not understand.
Avatar 11:15pm coelacanth∅:

veggie dogs? oh those are dogs whose vegetarian masters don't give any meat to; most often found in veterinarians' offices and pet cemeteries.
Avatar 11:20pm jillydg:

This cover is crazy!
Swag For Life Member 11:21pm Jinx:

always liked A Girl Like You, esp. the fuzz guitar.
Avatar 11:22pm Franco Twinkie:

Been a dog person like you are Coel. have you ever wondered about the component of canned dog food that is listed as cereal? Are they talking about Wheat Chex and Cheerios? I know you're a label reader, so you probably figured this out a long time ago.
Avatar 11:22pm jillydg:

Wooo Hooooo... so good!
Avatar 11:23pm Franco Twinkie:

I loved Edwin Collins back in the day.
Avatar 11:29pm coelacanth∅:

Franco my guess if it just says "cereal" that it's whatever grain they can get cheapest at any given time - which means it's probably mostly corn.
fruit loops are too expensive.
Avatar 11:33pm coelacanth∅:

(rough corn meal or wheat meal. the standards are low for pet food. lots of rat hair and insect parts.)
Avatar 11:40pm Franco Twinkie:

I would give my beagle a bowl of menudo and she would eat all the hominy, but take out the tripe and drop it on the kitchen floor. She hated things that were rubbery or wiggled. She also hated Jello.
  11:41pm Dean:

I, too, saw the Screamers more than twice. They were inimitable.
  11:43pm JakeGould:

The duck is now supposedly near the turtle pond area near Strawberry Fields and the Museum of Natural History. I know this because I want to see the damned duck!
  11:43pm Dean:

Once, I recall, Crime opened for them and The Weirdos. What a show.
Avatar 11:45pm coelacanth∅:

it's weird,Franco. i've seen dogs do that too. the thing you think they'll go nuts over.
i once gave a dog scraps of sushi -not bad but the ends and bits that were too small for the chef to work with. dog wouldn't eat it.
Avatar 11:47pm Franco Twinkie:

Dean! It's hard to explain The Screamers to people that never saw them. The surviving acetates and demos, or even videos for that matter don't convey how they could electrify a room. And yes i was at that show too! It was the day befor the forth of July 1978 at the Stardust Ballroom. I remember lot of firecrackers been thrown around.
  11:47pm Dean:

Yow, Genesis P-Orridge is featured in the LAT. Leukemia?

  11:49pm Dean:

The Screamers did what they wanted to do. They had no punk pretenses, no rock pretenses, certainly no classical or jazz pretenses. They just made an intense, incisive noise, and Tomata served as a most charismatic MC of the noise.
Avatar 11:51pm Franco Twinkie:

He was a magic man for sure! And a real nice guy too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, Marty. Maybe you can enjoy a cold, refreshing malt duck after the show.
Avatar 11:58pm Franco Twinkie:

Marty, thanks for letting us hang in yer crib.
Swag For Life Member 11:58pm Jinx:

fun show; thanks, Marty.
Avatar 11:59pm coelacanth∅:
