Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Webhamster Henry:

This is a nice change! although I kind of expect to hear the Hungarian one next!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:02pm fred:

Good evening David and all
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:03pm doctorjazz:

Hi. Liked the change in the opening
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm David D:

Good evening and afternoon, NGH, Henry, and Fred!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm David D:

And Doctorjazz!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Webhamster Henry:

Today: a salute to Berlin , if I recall correctly.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:05pm doctorjazz:

First , we take Manhattan...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm David D:

Exactly - and we will.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Yvang:

Ich bin ein Berliner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm David D:

Hallo Yvang!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Yvang:

Hallo David!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Webhamster Henry:

My sister is there at the Max Planck Institute for a few more weeks. Although I think she's over in London on a side trip.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Carmichael:

Ich bin ein Californian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm David D:

Oh nice, which MPI is she at?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm David D:

Hey Carmichael!

Ich bin ein Zwetschkenknödel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm David D:

Berliner are jelly doughnuts here and Amerikaner are big frosted cookies.

Hello u-bahners
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm David D:

Greetings, Melinda!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Yvang:

I remember Ideal, they also made some "reggae" songs.
Avatar 4:13pm Parq:

Mrs. Parq and I are making our way through the third season of "The Man in the High Castle". I need not elaborate, this cheerful nod to the real-life Berlin is a bit of cognitive dissonance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm David D:

Parq - yes, I can imagine!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:24pm northguineahills:

I thought the Ezsett was discontinued from the modern German language 20 years ago, it make it easier for me to spell scheisse....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm David D:

Sorry, NGH, they just "simplified" the rules to make it ß after long vowels, so it's still Scheiße after all. But Schloss instead of Schloß. I know that made it really simple...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:29pm fred:

@ngh: is that the same reform that turned "ö" into "oe"? That change didn't make life really simple for one of my bosses who has documents with both spellings... It's not as if the French administration was aware of these subtleties
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:32pm Carmichael:

i before e, except after c. And y is sometimes a vowel.
Avatar 🚂 4:33pm Sem:

Hello, David, subway-ers, all. Lovin' the theme today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm David D:

Hello Sem - glad you are enjoying it!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Stanley:

Hallo David, wie geht's?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Doug Schulkind:

Hello, David and fellow passengers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm David D:

Fred: Oe is only used if to replace the ö if it technically difficult to use it. The umlauts/dots are the only spelling regularly used in German-speaking countries. I'm sure the French administration manage the best they can.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm David D:

Hallo Stanley and Doug!
Avatar 4:41pm Parq:

Sem, that Sarah lady from "The Incredibles" is a vowel, too.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Carmichael:

Now I'm thinking of my own Anglo Irish pronunciation rules. They're a separate nightmare ...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:45pm fred:

@David: they do manage the best they can... or rather care, which isn't much. Probably hoping for a bribe to grease the wheels
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm David D:

Fred: I can pay them in diaereses and other special characters.
Avatar 4:50pm glenn:

sarah vowell. one of my favourite writers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm David D:

Hey Glenn!
Avatar 4:55pm glenn:

hello. gearing up for legal weed tomorrow.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Carmichael:

Buy a fancy holster for your lighter, Glenn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm David D:

Yes, congratulations on that!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:56pm northguineahills:

Gee, I can't think of any more songs named "Berlin". what are we to do?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:56pm fred:

@David: German has a pretty lame diacritics game. Look at Vietnamese to see how it's done (I'm kind of a Unicode geek)
Avatar 4:56pm glenn:

i didn't say i was going to be partaking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm David D:

Glenn: Well congratulations if it is something you are happy about, I suppose.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:59pm northguineahills:

FL may be backwards, but at least my town FINALLY got three legal medicinal mj dispensaries. That said, w/in city limits, as long as you're not obnoxious or a dick, the cops here usually ignore any smoking (see it all the time w/in a cop's nose all the time).

mj is the only thing that mostly helps my insomnia, although 1/4 ounce lasts me a year.
Avatar 4:59pm glenn:

totally happy. and soon i won't have to hear about it anymore.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Carmichael:

Then get a fancy holder for your gas mask, Glenn.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Webhamster Henry:

There's Berlin Im Licht (Kurt Weill)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:01pm northguineahills:

Turkish and Romanian have fun diacritic marks as well. There still developing the Kazakhstani latin diacritics, since it's been about a year since they've adopted the Latin alphabet.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:04pm Webhamster Henry:

Unicode can combine a whole lot of diacriticals. If you look at a glyph collection, especially for phonetic alphabet use, it's pretty astounding!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:06pm northguineahills:

This is the only unicode that matters to me! en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:07pm doctorjazz:

TMBG! Don't hear them enough Love that band !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm David D:

Doc: This was actually one of the first songs I thought of for the show. Strange, I know.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:08pm Webhamster Henry:

I see your Akkadian and play Linear B: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:08pm northguineahills:

Wow, this TMBG takes me back!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Rich in Washington:

This is the best song from Blade Runner that was never in Blade Runner, IMHO.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:12pm fred:

@ngh: Great, another Kazakh script. As if I didn't have enough trouble googling a Kazakh singer I like a lot thanks to random transliteration
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm David D:

Hello Rich - sounds about right!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:13pm Carmichael:

A Social Security scammer just called me and interrupted the FMU phone app. I took the opportunity to alert them to FMU and the pledge drive.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Carmichael:

Flood is a pretty darn good album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm Rich in Washington:

Flood is indeed amazing. I should probably pull it out and listen to it again soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm David D:

Carmichael: That is the perfect response.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:15pm northguineahills:

@fred: third Kazakh script in a century (Arabic/Cyrillic/Latin).

For 15 years, scholars have been requesting Old Hanzi oracle bone script in unicode, but to no avail....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm David D:

NGH: Oracle bone script would definitely have my vote.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:20pm fred:

@ngh: they're too busy adding emojis (which may actually improve Unicode support beyond the 16-bit range, the way Beyoncé shut up many 7-bit holdovers in the music industry)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:38pm northguineahills:

mechanik destruktiw komandoh, new to me!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:39pm northguineahills:

I can recognize any Jay-Z song, but I have no clue what Beyonce sounds like.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm David D:

She sounds almost, but not quite, entirely unlike Mekanik Destrüktiw Komandöh.
  5:44pm spodiodi:

nice show :)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:45pm northguineahills:

wait, there is a Linear A unicode? it hasn't been deciphered yet!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:46pm fred:

Mekanik Destrüktiw Komandöh kinda reminded me of Khlam
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:49pm fred:

Is that name a nod to Magma?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:52pm northguineahills:

Still haven't found a restaurant outside of Japan that makes yakisoba as well as I can (and that includes NYC)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm David D:

Thanks, Spodiodi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm David D:

Fred: Yes, thanks - that was what I was trying to come up on mic before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm David D:

(The Magma, not the Khlam, of course!)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Stanley:

Have been listening and enjoying but now time for bed.
Thanks, David.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm David D:

Thanks and good night, Stanley!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 6:01pm fred:

Fitting that Magma came up, there are a lot of diacritics in Kobaïan. A friend did a documentary about their tour in China, one of the rewards was having Christian Vander giving pledgers a Kobaïan name.
I don't know much about their music, though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm David D:

Maybe I'll play their original Mekanik at some point - funky 70s stuff.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 6:05pm doctorjazz:

Enjoying the jazz /jazzy set,, time to take off, catch you in the car, thanks David, it was a mini vacation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm David D:

Thanks, Doc, have a good ride home...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 6:07pm doctorjazz:

(this reminds me a bit of early Carla Bley...)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 6:08pm fred:

I think Oliver Benoit's tenure as director of the ONJ ends this year, it might take a different direction then
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm David D:

Fred: I see Frédéric Maurin will be next. I'll have to see what he's done before...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 6:30pm northguineahills:

Pago Pago next week?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm David D:

Next week is looking like a urban tour of Africa.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 6:33pm northguineahills:

Windy Windhoek? (I know there are songs in Deutsche about Windhoek.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm David D:

NGH: That would be quite a find. I wonder...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 6:37pm northguineahills:

I could also go for a Kinshasa vs Brazzaville cage match showdown, two Congos enter, only one exits! (to be refereed by a Belgian....wait, too soon???)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm David D:

NGH: Good idea, in any case I'm sure there will be a -ville or two...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 6:41pm northguineahills:

I've found old comics and postcards about Windhoek in Deustsche online (there still is a small minority Germany speaking population, and even an German kreole (that had nearly died out).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm David D:

The creole must be fascinating - I will have to look for that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm David D:

Much of this set is also a linguistic tribute to the Berlin dialect.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Doug Schulkind:

And it's a tribute to you and your wonderful selections, David.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 6:50pm northguineahills:

Of course, Namibia was where the Germans got their start on genocide (the Hereros and Namaqua). But it was the British next door who started the concept of the concentration camp on the Afrikaners during the Boer Wars. (ok, only happy thoughts now!)

I can only tell the difference b/tn High and Low German (Bavarian especially) on the former).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm David D:

Thanks, Doug! I will blush a bit and then go on mic...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 6:54pm northguineahills:

Thankd, David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm David D:

And thanks NGH and everyone - have a great week...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 7:59pm Webhamster Henry:

I had to cut out - did you play anything with dialogue in Berliner Accent? It's one I don't know too well!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm David D:

Yes, Henry, most of the oldest tracks towards the end feature a strong Berlin dialect.
