I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm listener james from westwood:

Afternoon, Mayuko and all!
  12:00pm P-90:

Greetings, Mayuko-DJ!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm fred:

Good afternoon Mayuko and listeners. I hope you'll give some insight into what's going on in that video
Avatar 12:02pm Mayuko:

So freaking surreal to hear this ondo track on wfmu. I had to listen to this hundreds of times as a child at school and summer festival.
Avatar 12:02pm Mayuko:

Also, welcome everyone!!! Thanks for tuning in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Ooh yeah! Time for the weekly dose of vertigo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Polyus:

Hello Mayuko.
Avatar 12:08pm Mayuko:

@fred it's a video of bon dance festival, it takes place in August. The souls of ancestors come back to this world in the Bon season and we have dance parties to welcome em, supposedly. These are music for such festivals.
Avatar 12:08pm Mayuko:

Hi Ken, and Polyus! Happy to have you guys here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Dropof Goldensun:

Hey there Mayuko and gang!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm fred:

Thanks Mayuko, throwing a dance party looks like a good way to greet anyone
Avatar 12:12pm Mayuko:

Hellos Dropof! Welcome!
Avatar 12:13pm Mayuko:

@fred yah! I like that it's for everyone, young and old, dead and living.
Avatar 12:15pm Mayuko:

That stage in the middle is where the music comes from and people circle around it dancing. I kinda think it might be nice to have a dance club with that structure, having a DJ in the center.
Avatar 12:17pm Mayuko:

This Teppo's track is Kawachi ondo - which started its tradition as kind of requiem for the dead people.
  12:17pm Gary via app:

Listening on the way up to Beacon
  12:19pm rbrt:

somehow we always end up back at dead people
Avatar 12:19pm Mayuko:

Yay, Gary!
  12:19pm rbrt:

Happy Saturday!
Avatar 12:21pm Mayuko:

@rbrt Listening to kawachi ondo is evolution from being goth.
Avatar 12:22pm Mayuko:

(Also happy Sat to you too!)
  12:22pm rbrt:

  12:22pm Joe:

Greetings Mayuko and listeners. I'm excited to hear this Obon-themed show!
  12:22pm rbrt:

this has relaxed vibes like reggae to me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm tmoyo:

Hi Mayuko and all!
Bonodori party!
  12:25pm rbrt:

hey tmoyo
Avatar 12:25pm Mayuko:

@rbrt Yaas! I have indeed some dub tracks ready!
Avatar 12:25pm Mayuko:

Hi Joe! Thanks for tuning in!!
  12:26pm rbrt:

@Mayuko :DDDD
Avatar 12:26pm Mayuko:

Hi tmoyo! This show is late for the obon season as you know but better late than never x(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm fred:

dub tracks? I'm all for that, especially if they involve the dub-dub-dublin ambassador: www.youtube.com...
  12:33pm rw:

Good morning! I think I could do the Bon dance.
Avatar 12:34pm Mayuko:

@fred I must check out that Dublin local information after my show. Since maybe I'll move there if I keep getting yelled at by racists here.
Avatar 12:36pm Mayuko:

@rw Yes! Anyone can dance to the bon dance, literally! Or more accurately, it doesn't matter if you dance it wrong, as long as you are moving somehow. haha!
  12:37pm rw:

You get yelled at by racists? What's wrong with people?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Mayuko and kindred spirits
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm fred:

@Mayuko: it's a link to the insane ads Lee Scratch Perry did for Guinness years ago. Billy Jam has good information about that city
More importantly: who is yelling at you? There's something wrong with them, not you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm fred:

"it doesn't matter if you dance it wrong, as long as you are moving somehow". I think that's a dance that matches my dance skills, which boil down to "moving somehow"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm tmoyo:

Ignore the racists and stay safe...

This is a cool track!
  12:45pm rbrt:

yeah Oki!
Avatar 12:45pm Mayuko:

@rw @fred Some slimy man at the Lex ave subway stop which is also pretty slimy, maybe he was a spirit of Lex ave stop.
Avatar 12:46pm Mayuko:

Hi coelacanth∅! Thanks for tuning in!
Avatar 12:47pm Jeff Moore:

Oh, listen to what you're playing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm coelacanth∅:

you could move to where i live. i haven't been japanese here but i'm pretty sure you'd never hear racist yelling here
(it's a bit of a commute to the city though)
  12:50pm rbrt:

subway guy's life prob sucks so he wants everyone else to feel bad too
  12:50pm rw:

Oh, by the way, nice poster! I like the punk rock show title text. Where's a good place to hang this thing?
  12:51pm rw:

coelacanth, are you still trying to rent out that room? And I'm with rbrt. When I get mad it's usually because I'm angry at myself for some reason.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm fred:

Raga Massive did a very nice version of In C

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm melinda:

hi everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Dropof Goldensun:

Mayuko, was that YOU at the Lex ave stop?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm coelacanth∅:

rw i am not, though i'm not at peace with the couple that moved in. i'm trying to have faith that they'll become more responsible once their lives gain some routine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm tmoyo:

I remember going to my first bon dance when I was 10, my cousins took me and my sisters when we visited them just coming back from NJ where we grew up.
The lights and decorations were really dreamy and fascinating. Also loved yakisoba at the street food stand!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm Dropof Goldensun:

That festival really does sound quite amazing!
Oh, and of course I was joking with my prior comment! :)
  1:06pm rbrt:

yellow submarine!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Dropof Goldensun:

Definitely an improvement over Ringo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm coelacanth∅:

haha aside from the laughing out loud factor this version does not redeem this song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm david w:

Hello Mayuko and all in our safe harbor!
  1:09pm P-90:

Happy 50th Anniversary of Yellow Submarine!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm fred:

Okinawa influence there?
  1:12pm rbrt:

♡ Niagara-Ondo
Avatar 1:13pm Jeff Moore:

Now I'm trying to remember – did the Beatles' original Yellow Submarine recording have that melodic quotation from "Anchors Aweigh", or was it added just to Yellow Submarine Ondo to help kitsch it up?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm tmoyo:

niagara > crazy cats YAY!
Avatar 1:15pm Mayuko:

Jeff! Thanks for tuning in & the track!!
Avatar 1:16pm Mayuko:

Hi melinda! Thanks for tuning in!
  1:18pm P-90:

Haruhisa Kawada
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm fred:

@Mayuko: Your comment about Dublin reminded me of a (I think) Korean artist who worked with video and paper. One vid had her in a London park in a dress made of phone book pages, in another she dragged a paper horse through Dublin and kids kicked and eventually ruined the horse. I can't remember her name, does that ring a bell?
Avatar 1:19pm Mayuko:

David w! Glad to have you here!!
  1:20pm rw:

Jeff, I don't remember it. Nice addition, though. Huh?
Avatar 1:20pm Dave B:

Hey there, Hi there, Ho there!
Avatar 1:21pm Jeff Moore:

Oh, Kathryn just told me something else about Neel Murgai – he's a radio guy! She says he used to have a show on WREK in Atlanta.
  1:21pm rw:

Very lighthearted set here. For Vertigo, I mean.
Avatar 1:25pm Mayuko:

@fred re Niagara Ondo, I think there's similarity in Japanese main island folk music and Okinawa one, in general. But Ryuichi Sakamoto is playing keyboard in that track, so possibly that could have been intentional?
Avatar 1:30pm Mayuko:

@P-90 also known as Yoshio Kawada, who was the mentor of Hibari Misora as a little girl!

Hey Hey Dave B!!
Avatar 1:32pm Mayuko:

@fred re Korean woman in Dublin, I should look her up!!
  1:33pm rbrt:

ney ney neyyyyioooo nah nahh ah ah ahh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm fred:

That makes a lot of sense. In fact what I took as Okinawan influence was closer to Ryuichi Sakamoto's take on music from Okinawa than to the real stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm Ken From Hyde Park:

This reminds me that Mexico's Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) festival is coming in a couple months.
Avatar 1:34pm Mayuko:

@tmoyo niagara > crazy cats A segue way that cannot be more obvious haha!
Avatar 1:35pm Mayuko:

@ken YEAH! Another most favorite festival!!
  1:36pm rbrt:

♡ Amehata ondo
Avatar 1:37pm Mayuko:

@Jeff Now that Neel Murgai is in Brooklyn, I wish we could have him on WFMU!
  1:37pm JakeGould:

Hey Mayuko!
Avatar 1:39pm Mayuko:

@rw heavyhearted sets can be good too! (and thanks for getting the poster if I have not said thanks yet)
Avatar 1:40pm Mayuko:

@fred I think me too. I think I read somewhere that Haruomi Hosono was there at the recording of that song as well and that's where he got one of the inspirations for the concept of Yellow Magic Orchestra.
Avatar 1:43pm Mayuko:

Hey Jake! I had a question that I meant to ask you! When you saw those raccoons stealing food from stray cats under the military truck, was it on 4th ave near the cemetery by chance??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm fred:

And of course Haruomi Hosono played in Paradise View, with that fun anachronistic scene with YMO when the story is supposed to take place years before they got together
  1:44pm rw:

It got heavier as it went along. Always good. I feel like a broken record saying thanks over and over to you and everyone at the station but thanks as always! I'm constantly struck by the quality and energy and commitment and knowledge here.
  1:44pm JakeGould:

The most interesting thing I have seen about racism in Brooklyn growing up here, moving away and then living in different neighborhoods is how the branding of “Brooklyn” has warped the world.

If you are in “Brownstone Brooklyn” neighborhoods like Park Slope, you will see tons of white people lecturing other white people on what racism is based on utterly nothing. But the second you get into other neighborhoods, real racism happens. And it all stinks: Old prejudices still exist and then in—frankly—safer neighborhoods racism is debated in a way that makes it sound like some live action role playing game.

Which is all to say I once went into a Vietnamese sandwich shop in Park Slope and this woman started speaking in Vietnamese to the staff. They responded in English “I have no idea what you are talking about…” and then she awkwardly was informed the staff was all Chinese and she looked at me as if she landed in a “Twilight Zone” episode.

PS: And yes those raccoons were spotted in that lot near 38th Street and 5th Avenue in Sunset Park.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm melinda:

Nice tunes!
  1:50pm JakeGould:

I like raccoons.
  1:51pm rw:

Raccoons... I got a good photo the other morning... https://www.dropbox.com/s/z7rj5cayy57m5k5/raccoons.jpg?dl=0
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm listener james from westwood:

Many thanks, Mayuko—always a delightful musical journey!
Avatar 1:55pm Jeff Moore:

Any chance that Sunset Park Park gathering has any connection to Falun Gong?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm fred:

Easier way to find Chinese music: just ask Gary (his 2017 premium is awesome)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm tmoyo:

I want to see the sunset park park party...
Thanks for the fun show Mayuko!

@Jake I know the cat lady who feeds em and apparently taken advantage of by them raccoons! I should report her!!
Avatar 2:04pm Mayuko:

Thank you everyone again for listening! See you all next week!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm fred:

The artist I referred to earlier is Kang-Hyun Ahn. I don't know if she's still active. The phone book dress piece was called "East London yellow pages", the paper horse one "Do focail, mo capall"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm fred:

I found a link to the paper horse vid here: www.youtube.com...

I guess a google search could find these, but I'm not sure others have trained google to show up my own preferred weird stuff
