Is that what's his name?
Avatar 12:01pm βrian:

Is that Bob Log without his helmet?

You got it exactly right, Dean!

Way to go Mary! Hey Doug and Co.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm listener james from westwood:

Been in since the git-go, but just before airtime, I got a devil of a splinter that needed removing! Bit of first aid in progress during the theme.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Doug Schulkind:

Only tha best for U, Dom.

Greetings, rw!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Doug Schulkind:

@Listener James from Westwood
Good luck with that! I got a splinter in my foot a few months back and couldn't for the life of me eradicate it. I hobbled around for weeks, too terrified to call the doctor and face the music. Finally went to an urgent care and the dude pulled out an inch-long spike in about 4 seconds. I've got the splinter taped to my wall right here to remind me to haul my wussy-ass self to the doctor without delay.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Doug Schulkind:

And yes, the bastard is literally an inch long. (The splinter, not the doc.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm listener james from westwood:

@Doug: Jeeeeeez, that's a vampire killer right there! Glad it's out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm doctorjazz:

Hi drummers... Wish I could sing that fast !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm sinner:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Doug Schulkind:

Have another drink, doctorjazz. Then try again.

Welcome, Rev. Dr. Sinner, Sir!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Doug Schulkind:

Friends, I am attempting to program a sequence of Bollywood tracks WITHOUT spinning Lata Mangeshkar or Asha Bhosle. Not sure it's ever been pulled off. Wish me luck!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Doug Schulkind:

The music in our next set is the inspiration for today's playlist image. See if you can guess the connection.
Avatar 12:28pm βrian:

Doug's Angry Inch?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm Doug Schulkind:

Size doesn't matter, βrian.
Avatar 12:30pm βrian:

Tell that to the E.R. doc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm listener james from westwood:

Ah, genius way to go for not including Lata or Asha, film themes!
  12:30pm rw:

If anyone can pull off a stunt like that it's our man Schulkind. And I'm not even going to try to make whatever connection there may be to the playlist image.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Doug and 100% GTDS listeners (...whatever)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm Doug Schulkind:

I will forever be embarrassed on behalf of WFMU for the time Kenny G made a fool of himself in the presence of Asha Bhosle when he found himself dining in the same East 6th Street restaurant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm Doug Schulkind:

Big radio bear hug, coelacanth∅!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm coelacanth∅:

is that the killer? (one of the killers?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Doug Schulkind:

I don't even remember the exact story, but I remember Kenny G regaling us proudly of his misadventure. #cringeworthy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm coelacanth∅:

it's hard to imagine Kenny G making a fool of himself in public
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm steveo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Doug Schulkind:

I'll drink to that, rw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Whatever this is, it is 100% not Mary Wing. Hot and sunny and humid here today. Not easy to twerk and shirk, especially while cutting the grass.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm The microphone has been drinking:

Some of my favorite NYC memories take place on those in-between fields.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm listener james from westwood:

Looks like he's got 2 gigs in 2018 and one in production, according to IMDB, so good on him for an enduring acting career!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm listener james from westwood:

The production office of my first full-time job was up near the NY border for a spell, right across town from, oddly enough, another psychology/social science publisher. I consider it a missed opportunity that we never contacted them to set up an inter-publisher bowling league at the alley in town.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm listener james from westwood:

Also, the Central Park Beer Man just had a birthday this Aug 9; HBD, O hydrator of the base-running masses!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Doug Schulkind:

David was a sweet guy. He would hang out with us, imbibing his own "product," whilst enjoying the social connections.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Doug Schulkind:

If I remember correctly (always an iffy proposition), David got a bit part in one of the Shakespeare in the Park performances, which was (is) performed in a outdoor theater in Central Park. David would hang with us drinking beers, then race off to get into costume to perform that evening. I forget which play he was in.
Avatar 1:22pm geezerette:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Doug Schulkind:

Howwwwww-deeeee, geezerette!
Avatar 1:23pm geezerette:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Doug Schulkind:

This Andrew Hill trio presents one of the earliest appearances on record (if not THE earliest) of the Art Ensemble of Chicago's longtime bass player Malachi Favors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm listener james from westwood:

@Doug: Hopefully one of Falstaff's drinking crew in the Henry IV plays!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm coelacanth∅:

steveo, if you're still here, thanks! the player's okay. it needs to be adjusted frequently to get a stereo recording. i only bought it for the looping capabilities; i just listened to all my 8-tracks through to assess their health before posting them on craigslist. i'm only keeping a couple dozen to use for my own noisy endeavors. thanks to ebay's buyer protection policy (which often fails miserably as well) i got the machine for free, because the seller tried to scam me. i did have to fix it; but contrary to popular belief 8-track players are not especially problematic, and the tapes are easily fixable.
Avatar 1:27pm geezerette:

Dreamy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Doug Schulkind:

@ljfw
Ha! David would've had a hard time playing Falstaff himself. He was a thin and healthy sort.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm Doug Schulkind:

Ha! I found it. The play was Henry IV, Part 1 in 1987. Falstaff was played by Donald Moffat. Still not sure what role David played: www.nytimes.com...

You had the play right, James!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm steveo:

@coel sounds like fun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Doug Schulkind:

Looks like David played Sir Michael. Not sure if that was a "bit" part or not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm steveo:

love this piece; happy to hear a new (to me) interpretation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Doug Schulkind:

To think, at the time that I was hanging out with David Gianopoulos and my publishers league softball team in Central Park, I had just started filling in at WFMU. Summer of 1987. I had done maybe 4-5 fill-in shows. On 1 February 1988 I broadcast my very first show of my own. Haven't been off the air since.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Doug Schulkind:

Robin Kenyatta is playing Monk's "Ruby My Dear" here in duet with the late, great Muhal Richard Abrams!
Avatar 1:36pm Carmichael:

From that article: "Sir Michael... David Gianopoulos"
Avatar 1:37pm geezerette:

Love this Monk,so sweet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Doug Schulkind:

@Carmichael
Yeah, I just saw that. Also, hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm The microphone has been drinking:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm Doug Schulkind:

I'm thinking of opening a Thai restaurant called The Pad Phet Basil Pad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm listener james from westwood:

@Doug: Great sleuthing! Sir Michael had lines, though not many, but enough to avoid his being some random supernumerary: www.opensourceshakespeare.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Doug Schulkind:

@LJFW
Hey the lines mention ME!!!

"Why, my good lord, you need not fear;
There is Douglas and Lord Mortimer."

  2:37pm Dean:

Well, Conchita Supervia, and then everyone else.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm Doug Schulkind:

Weird mystery about this trippy "Blue Glass Bubbles" from Gloria Taylor. I'll mention it in the mic break.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm steveo:

(oh was that catty? i take it back)
  2:38pm Dean:

Come to think of it, I believe Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is an anagram of Aretha Franklin and Conchita Supervia...
Avatar 2:39pm βrian:

The first time I heard Nusrat, I was stacking kumquats. No lie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm steveo:

i mention my age on these boards at times because a) i have no reason to keep it a secret and b) it's central to thinking about my life history in relation to the music that was part of my life at different ages
