Ridgewood Radio features concert recordings by adventurous bands and experimental musicians and restored archival tapes from private and institutional collections captured at venues large and small across the five boroughs of New York. It is produced by David Weinstein and Outpost Artists Resources operating out of the Ridgewood section of Queens, NY, where you'll find more yellow bricks than on the road to Oz and the cemetery of your choice is never more than a few blocks from home.

Afternoon, Ruth and David and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm doctorjazz:

Hi! Sounds like a show up my alley!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm coelacanth∅:

hi David and all
- the Butch Morris piece is contemplative in a very different way than the malawi mouse boys piece is! went from cruising comfortably but tentatively in 4th gear at a relaxed speed to gunning it in 2nd gear.
how's that?!
Avatar 3:08pm david w:

Hello Fred and james, my pleasure always. And yes, djazz, this one is semi-aimed at you.
Avatar 3:08pm fred:

I think Hyperion Ensemble is worth seeing, if it's still a thing. Ana-Maria Avram is no longer with us but I hope Iancu Dimitrescu keeps it going
Avatar 3:10pm geezerette:

totally onboard,this is wonderful.
Avatar 3:11pm david w:

Nice coel. I usually like the shock, but that little Butch moment is kind of sublime but I'll make up for this later in the show.
Avatar 3:14pm david w:

@Fred... I just peeked at the Hyperion site and they seem busy and touring. And I agree they would fit in here and have done fine work.
Avatar 3:14pm Sem:

Hello, David, Ridgewoodites, and all. This show + humidity for days = a delightful sound sauna.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm coelacanth∅:

"two great tracks that don't taste great together"!
anyway,nothing to make up for!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm Webhamster Henry:

Equal temperament is overrated.

Hi David, Ruth and Ridgewoodians!
Avatar 3:24pm david w:

Ah, Henry you capture my heart.
Avatar 3:27pm david w:

And I see you, too, Sem, through the hazy air. Fresh towels for everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm doctorjazz:

Saw Butch Morris do his conduction years back, ,most notable with the David Murray Big Band. Great shows!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm doctorjazz:

And this is terrific!!!!
Avatar 3:46pm geezerette:

Yeah, gloriously rich. :)
Avatar 3:50pm geezerette:

...like a benediction...the sound of hope...
Avatar 3:51pm david w:

These things were always like ceremonies.
Avatar 3:53pm fred:

I wish I could have seen one of these
Avatar 3:53pm geezerette:

would love to have been there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm doctorjazz:

This Laura Andel makes me smile, has a touch of early Ellington feel to it.
Avatar 3:57pm david w:

On behalf of Laura Angel, honored.
Avatar 3:58pm david w:

Oops spellcheck made Andel immortal!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm coelacanth∅:

and speaking of equal temperaments being overrated (which we were a long time ago!) i still now & then pop in a cassette i recorded from the radio (wfmu) early '80s, the set containing 2 oh-ok songs, run dmc, jan kawalski, a classic spanish song i'd love to identify some day, bing crosby doing "swing on a star", i don't remember what else, but ending up with the slits' version of heard it through the grapevine. somehow it worked! so i didn't bat any eyelashes for the first segue today!
(just thought i might've been misunderstood with my "don't taste great together" comment)
Avatar 4:00pm geezerette:

Ellingtonian for sure.
Avatar 4:02pm david w:

All cool coel. Shotgun matchings that blew my mind on WFMU decades ago are burned into my memory too. Basically gave me the courage to do this show all these years later.

Avatar 4:12pm northguineahills:

Just had my fist decent bagel since I left NYC. Took forever....
Avatar 4:13pm northguineahills:

Not familiar w/ Laura Andel.....nice!
Avatar 4:13pm david w:

A good bagel needs all five fingers!
Avatar 4:14pm northguineahills:

This one needed a roll of paper towels....
Avatar 4:20pm northguineahills:

Why am I just learning of her NOW!!!

I used to see kenta and michelle nagai all the time!
Avatar 4:25pm fred:

@ngh: Bagel? I thought you were having gator tail with ghost peppers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm doctorjazz:

Not familiar with Laura Andel either, but I've given up saying that listening to FMU. Sometimes I may ask for information, but I expect to hear music/artists I d
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm doctorjazz:

. . Don't know (that's the fun of listening here)
(sorry about the split post, damn phone)
Avatar 4:31pm david w:

Andel grew up and studied in Argentina. Has a degree in Tango! Lives in NYC but projects all over. Web site is rich.
Avatar 4:31pm fred:

Looking forward to that set with Cecil Taylor. Too bad he wasn't conducting, though I guess that could lead to a "Sweet Lou" moment
Avatar 4:33pm northguineahills:

@fed:, but I was tempted when I saw it on the menu at the restaurant I went to yesterday (I've had it before). I should get some at a butcher and grill it w/ peppers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm coelacanth∅:

ngh you still tawkin about bagels?! damn i want a lox bagel. i'm trapped where i am until around 8.

and ditto on the angel/andel. thanks for the introductions
Avatar 4:34pm david w:

Ruth disapproves of my grand proclamations, so I'll just say the Jazz Composer's Orchestra 1968 album set something big in motion.
Avatar 4:42pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Mmm send me a lox bagel for my show next, I haven't had time to eat
Avatar 4:42pm fred:

Speaking of "Sweet Lou" moments, a few months after I started working at Ircam, Boulez ejected a percussionist who hadn't opened the score beforehand and fumbled something. The whole orchestra (Ensemble Inter-Contemporain) went on strike, leaving the rehearsal place and gathering right next to my office. That was weird. Boulez was unfailingly nice to people like janitors, students or poorly paid postdocs, and demanding with bosses and leaders. I liked that about him
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm doctorjazz:

Becoming a space cadet... Searched for the albumon Discogs, found it, then for the heck of it checked an old, out of date album database I put together years back, and I HAVE it. Sheeesh!
Avatar 4:43pm northguineahills:

Sounds like what I've heard about Boulez...
Avatar 4:46pm david w:

That story is a keeper, Fred. We all want you to write the book on your adventures.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm doctorjazz:

Thanks, David! Fun show!
Avatar 4:48pm david w:

Thanks, Doc and all. Steamy atmosphere throughout!
Avatar 4:49pm northguineahills:

I think I just splooshed reading this lineup..... (phrasing?)

Everything today has such elegance, precision and power.
I want more!
Thanks,David, Ruth, and fellow audience members.
Avatar 4:51pm david w:

Thanks, geez, thanks ngh. Sploosh on!
Avatar 4:53pm northguineahills:

am I the only one who lost sound?
Avatar 4:54pm fred:

That lineup is indeed something
@ngh: sound is fine here
Avatar 4:54pm northguineahills:

earbuds decided it could take the intensity.
Avatar 4:54pm geezerette:

ngh, no dropouts here either.
Avatar 4:56pm northguineahills:

reset buds and phone, working now,,,,
Avatar 4:57pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Webhamster Henry:

I'll have to get the end of this in the archives - I was on a phone call! Thanks David & Ruth!
Avatar 5:00pm fred:

I only got to see Cecil Taylor once, in 2011. He was supposed to play with Amiri Baraka, but they had an argument before the show and performed separately. Both were great, I wish I could have seen them together
Thanks David
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm listener james from westwood:

Many thanks, Ridgewoodians!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Webhamster Henry:

It's great to pull up these pieces that need re-airing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm coelacanth∅:
