I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Hello Mayuko & everyone. The vibra tone is at max today! And my fan too...

There's an instrument (basically a bamboo tube with strings around its side) that's common in both Madagascar, Timor, and Southern Indonesia. Timor to Madagascar is a lot of space to cover, but apparently people did that a long time ago

hooray to the seafaring people. It's mind boggling how people traveled such distances.

Good morning. What have I missed?

When I go to the beach I always like to bring a scissor lift.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm

I'm not much a beach person but I will stay anyway. ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
fred:

I spent 7 hours yesterday at a Paris art school, taking in a huge variety of students' work. Cleansed my brain.
Also, cheap beer. And a Japanese student had an onigiri stand. Not great, but I kept stopping by, the rice was good
Avatar 12:19pm
Mayuko:

Good morning, rw! You only missed the opening of beer cans.
Avatar 12:21pm
Mayuko:

@Dropof That's ok, most of the Beach Boys were not much beach persons either, or so I heard.
  12:21pm
rw:

You guys drinking beer already? I'm still working on this coffee.
Avatar 12:24pm
Mayuko:

@rw a scissor lift and theoretical beer are the must-haves for a theoretical beach vacation.
Avatar 12:26pm
Mayuko:

@fred 7 hours of viewing artworks sounds exhausting! Even if they were all good.
  12:27pm
rbrt:

best time to visit the beach is at sunrise and sunset, everything in between is just hot sand
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm
Dropof Goldensun:

I'm not much of a Beach Boys person either! haha
  12:30pm
rw:

rbrt, that's why they installed the cool water. For those times in between.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm
fred:

@Mayuko: I paced myself and took many beer and onigiri breaks. But yeah, the place has many stairs. I'm sure I missed a couple of spots. It's a really nice place to visit if you ever get a chance, and I've been annoying coworkers praising these open doors days for years
  12:34pm

Avatar 12:38pm
Mayuko:

Welcome to my fake sea, the sea-dweller fleep!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm
fred:

@rw: good isn't the point for me. They're students, and often too influenced by the teachers. But there's a cauldron of ideas. And sometimes I really like something and get to follow a student's work over a few years. One funny thing is that it's often obvious who did what, so I often get to talk to the artists who did the stuff I liked best. But the obviousness isn't easy to describe, it's that they share something with their art
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Imaginary beach is great. No sunburn or weird stuff washing ashore. Decent wifi. Aloha, Mayuko and castaways!
Avatar 12:43pm

It's difficult for art to beat onigiri and beer anyway.
Avatar 12:45pm

fred you might enjoy the Art Walk here, it's an artist colony living/working in a vast old brewery in downtown L.A. The work, to be kind, is varied, but as you say, good isn't the point. art.breweryartwalk.com

Cauldron of ideas sounds cool. I haven't been to the Brewery Art Walk in years. Maybe it's time to put it back on the list. I know several people who live and/or work there.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm

northguineahills:

Heck, gauntlet that my wife had to go through (by extention, me) the latest round of immigration interviews (year four of our marriage) was a kafka-esque nightmare (w/o the kafka-esque efficiency), and she has a MA and makes a good living. Luckily, we had the funds to spend a shit ton on a lawyer. I even paid NY State taxes stating my permanent residence is in Brooklyn, to make the process smoother. (it only took 6 weeks for the last interview process to go though, instead of the previous interviews that took 30 mins. (lawyer said her being from Mexico might have been a factor).

Avatar 1:11pm
northguineahills:

I mentioned it before, but I found some pics someone took of the individual BBs sometime in the late 60s in an album I found in a thrift store. My wife framed them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm
coelacanth∅:

funny -earlier when i was in the shower "charlie don't surf" by the clash popped into my head for some reason. i haven't heard it in several years so i don't know why. ...but it made me wonder if it was inspired by the beach boys' not being surfers. (probably not though)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm
Dropof Goldensun:

@Mayuko - that Beach Boys tune was acceptable I suppose. It's the typical overplayed ones that really get to me!
Avatar 1:13pm
northguineahills:

My workplace has beer in the fridge, I usually only hit it if I'm sill a work past 20:00. Beer isn't allowed in the lab, but since I'm the only non-scientist, I rarely work in the lab (unless they need and I'm not busy).
Avatar 1:14pm
northguineahills:

@coel: Dennis Wilson was a surfer, but probably didn't start until after fame.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm
coelacanth∅:

i really don't like the beach boys' vocals on some songs - that being one; but the story is that Brian wrote that right after hearing about John F.Kennedy's death, which i find intriguing.

coelacanth∅: Charlie in Clash song is US military term for Viet Cong (VC - Victor Charlie - radio letters)

Did Clash get that line from 'Apocalypse Now'? I think maybe yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm

Rick i knew that term was along those lines, but i don't know what the surfing reference is about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm
coelacanth∅:

(my album didn't come with lyrics, as it was supposed to. i should go listen to that song again.)
Avatar 1:22pm
Mayuko:

@coelacanth∅ the beach boys' vocals are almost creepy sometimes, I can see people not liking it (though I enjoy that creepiness, haha.)
  1:23pm
rw:

If paperwork is involved, I would never be able to become a citizen here. And I was just having that Clash conversation with my son the other day. How the line came from Apocalypse Now. I didn't know VC was the origin of Charlie. I'll tell him!

Time for me and the kid to go install a toilet at my mom's house. Hopefully won't be too bad.

Take care all and enjoy the beach!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm

good luck rw. that's either really difficult or super easy, it seems.
Avatar 1:24pm

Doug!! Thank you for stopping by my fake beach before off to real vacation!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm
fred:

@ngh: you work with cool scientists there. There's no "I'm busy" excuse for me, even if it's just to get me to plug back a mouse they tore off. They're understandably bitter at getting a PhD that got them into precariat, but their taking it out on the help isn't exactly getting them solidarity vibes from me
