Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm listener james from westwood:

I was a kid during the disco era, so I grew up on Houston's wonderful version. But it wasn't until I began listening to FMU that I heard Melvin's original. It absolutely lifted the top off my head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Geezerette!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm Funky16Corners:

@James - Yeah, it's a game changer
Avatar 7:27pm geezerette:

Avatar 7:34pm northguineahills:

I didn't get into my disco until my roommate, who until then was just into indie rock, and was just getting into experimental and pop electronica, suddenly went whole hog into disco and started djing it everywhere (he was the only one doing it down here at the time) in '98.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm Funky16Corners:

There's so much good music if you ignore all the garbage like Ethel Merman and Disco Lucy and the like
Avatar 7:38pm northguineahills:

huh, my bluetooth earbuds listening via my phone sound better then my iPhone earbuds plugged into my work computer (phone is dying)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm Funky16Corners:

I haven't tried Bluetooth buds/phones yet. Both my sons use them.
Avatar 7:41pm northguineahills:

was going to get proper bluetooth tortoise shells, but, b/tn my Miami trip, speeding ticket, fixing my car's A/C, and getting new tires, that may have to wait until Labor day (sat on my old dj pair of headphones I had for 15 years).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm Funky16Corners:

Losing a good pair of DJ headphones sucks.
Avatar 7:47pm northguineahills:

my boss cut me a 4m switch of bamboo for me my ever growing tomato vine, probably need one for my squash and sweet potatoes as well). Now to figure how to get it into my car,,,,,,

@chresti y Jtothe y still b/p:ok, done, all saturated by sweat, forgot how tough it is. (I sort of hope some it grows, so I can have living trellises for my vines).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm Funky16Corners:

I wish I had bamboo growing in our back yard
Avatar 9:53pm Franco Twinkie:

Hey Larry! Enjoying the show from the safety of my bed today. Keep on keepin' on!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Franco!
Avatar 9:54pm still b/p:

We called it rhubarb when we were kids and whack-attacked armies of it with sticks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm Parq:

What the Hey? Well, I see I've got a lot of archive listening to do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Parq!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm Funky16Corners:

Yeah, five hour marathon tonight!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm coelacanth∅:

Larry many people have bamboo growing in their yards who wish they didn't. it can be very invasive in this country (probably depending on the variety) so careful what you wish for.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm Parq:

< a la Spazz's drop-in > Why don't some people *tell* me these things??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm Funky16Corners:

@C - I love the way it looks, and it would probably piss off my asshole neighbor while simultaneously making his house disappear.
Avatar 10:02pm Franco Twinkie:

Bamboo! Ugh! Attacked the runners with an ax. Didn't do any good - shit came right back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm Funky16Corners:

If it got out of control I'd just bring in some pandas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm Funky16Corners:

They're cheap and plentiful, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm coelacanth∅:

Larry it's beautiful for sure...as is japanese knotweed.
actually i routinely try to destroy lots of very beautiful plants. asiatic bittersweet is another; and wysteria; and "tree of heaven" (which is really a tree to hell) etc etc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm Funky16Corners:

I'm a fan of some things most people hate, i.e. dandelions, clover, sweetpea vines
Avatar 10:05pm northguineahills:

For our controlled field sites, we use bamboo as water breaks to keep floating aquatic vegetation from blowing to one side of our berms. My boss has a stand he keeps on chopping down for use at work, planting, or for material. We uproot them before the dry season so they don't spread (they don't spread too well in standing water).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm coelacanth∅:

you could keep bamboo under control to some degree by burying a barrier around it on all sides - no splits or holes; metal; strong, thick plastic or concrete... i'm not sure how deep to go. not as deep as with knotweed i know that.
Avatar 10:10pm still b/p:

I had a nice potted Japanese arrow bamboo plant years ago but neglected to pull it indoors before a freeze. I would place clusters of that if I was to design a yard and patio space.
Avatar 10:10pm northguineahills:

we have infestation of knotweed at some of our sites. Bamboo and knotweed are also both edible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm Funky16Corners:

I had to look knotweed up. I recognize it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm coelacanth∅:

i don't make an effort to kill dandelions, and i plant lots and lots of clover. those are invasive but nowhere near at the level of these other plants.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm coelacanth∅:

(really clover's not much more invasive than grass, by my experience)
Avatar 10:14pm Franco Twinkie:

Our bamboo problem is at the back of our property and I simply let our tenant deal with it. He's young and works in a nursery, so it's just like been at work for him.
Avatar 10:15pm northguineahills:

I have no lawn, just a garden, natural wildflowers, and otherwise natural undergrowth and trees, (no mowing or monoculture).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm coelacanth∅:

knotweed's apparently helpful to treat lyme disease. i haven't tried it, aside from frequent physical contact with it.
Avatar 10:16pm Franco Twinkie:

Coel, Do you have lyme disease?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm coelacanth∅:

Franco -probably. tests come back "inconclusive"; in other words some strains say negative and some say "not negative - at risk". i've pulled deer ticks out of my body several times but never noticed a bruise. (i also don't bruise that easily) i have all the symptoms but those symptoms are shared by many ailments.
Avatar 10:20pm still b/p:

Embedded (but not engorged) tick count for the season: 1 deer tick, 1 wood tick. That's way ahead of any other year in memory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm coelacanth∅:

i haven't found any yet this year, and i've been either up to my hips in grass or over my head in brush, shrubs and trees a lot since april. Lucky so far.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm Funky16Corners:

We had to tell our sons to stay off the wooded paths this summer. They started coming home with ticks, nothing embedded thankfully
Avatar 10:25pm Franco Twinkie:

I've read about it, for sure, but never actually talked to anyone who has it. I remember reading a piece in the New Yorker about John Lurie who suffers from it. He made it sound horrible.
Avatar 10:26pm northguineahills:

Thankfully lyme disease is rarely found this far south. Bu I'm also very keen on trying any edible plants I come across. (although many require much blanching or other preperation). Palmettos are everywhere here, just cut the stalks open and they taste like watercress/celery, no prep needed....
Avatar 10:26pm northguineahills:

Since I was a kid, I was taught that if I got a tick, to take a knife, put it over a flame, and dig it out....
Avatar 10:27pm Franco Twinkie:

I've never had a tick. Leeches,yes.
Avatar 10:31pm northguineahills:

@Franco: I've had both...

Going for a walk, will probably be back at the end to get ready to hit the hay....
  10:33pm chresti:

I had a tick on my head and I got it off before it attached
  10:35pm chresti:

Lizards help abate ticks in Griffith Park
Avatar 10:35pm still b/p:

Tick awareness and reflexive helpfulness are certainly heightened. Where I was clearing bamboo, I got at least three or four "check" advisories from restaurant workers out by the back door for their smoke and lunch breaks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm doctorjazz:

Hi all, forgot it was a marathon show, some archive listening to do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Doc!
  10:37pm chresti:

One year there were thousands on the trails- a hiker said you could see them jumping
Avatar 10:38pm Franco Twinkie:

For me, I'm not sure what is worst, the prospect of parasites on a stroll through the woods or driving across town in afternoon traffic.
Avatar 10:40pm still b/p:

Ticks or dicks....choose your encounter.
Avatar 10:41pm Franco Twinkie:

Sound like the bushes at Griffith Park!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm coelacanth∅:

Franco having a parasite exploit you, whether it's a tick or a politician, is a terrible feeling.
Avatar 10:43pm Jeff Ash:

These last three songs, I recognize each about six notes in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm Funky16Corners:

This one you may recognize later into the song (extended mix)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm coelacanth∅:

i once went hiking (somewhere in nj) and each of us (4 people) removed lots & lots of ticks. i remember counting close to 70 on myself - a few that i didn't find until getting home. nobody had any embed yet before being found and removed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm coelacanth∅:

ngh - lyme,ct (where it was invented) is pretty far from florida; but there's nothing stopping it. just a matter of time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm Funky16Corners:

I think Lyme ticks will reach FLA just as fire ants reach NJ
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm coelacanth∅:

right, and stinkbugs and brown recluse spiders have made their way to upstate ny. they acclimate
  10:50pm chresti:

Yikes C- I can’t remember if it was spring or fall- it was hot and hot and dry most of that year
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm coelacanth∅:

(maybe we'll end up with a kudzu problem here one day too)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm coelacanth∅:

chresti did you risk it? and did you get them on you?
Avatar 10:52pm still b/p:

Red rover, red rover, send bug plagues right over!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm Funky16Corners:

GAHHHHDDDD I hate stinkbugs.
  10:54pm chresti:

No. I stayed clear of the brush

My parents place had brushy areas where the pets would pick them up
  10:55pm chresti:

They are in the foothills of east Sf bay
Avatar 10:56pm Franco Twinkie:

In the late summer, when the stream beds run slow in the San Gabriel mountains, there is always at least one case of Bubonic plague. Lot's of people can't help themselves and stick there face in the water.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm Funky16Corners:

At this point I'd welcome a massive plague that targets stupid people, or at least makes them smarter
  11:02pm chresti:

At work, I put in a work order for more lizards when pests are a problem
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm Funky16Corners:

Then the lizards get out of control and you have to bring in eagles, then then eagles freak out and you have to get bears, and then tigers and on and on until the place is a shambles.
Avatar 11:09pm Franco Twinkie:

Coel, The brown recluse was introduced to this continent in the 1960's just at few miles from here. There was this hippie store in Sierra Madre that was importing, get this, bamboo floor mats from Asia. Guess what came along for the ride? In the park they have a bronze statue of a big spider! Also, they have the worlds largest Wisteria.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm Funky16Corners:

Invasive species are incredibly interesting (if also incredibly troublesome)
  11:10pm Dean:

Been listening off and on all night. Wish this were a regular gig.

Where in Sierra Madre was the former hippie store? I love that story!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Dean!
Avatar 11:12pm Franco Twinkie:

Had to be on Baldwin Ave. in that little strip of shops way above Foothill.
  11:14pm Dean:

Buddy of mine lives on Orange Grove, I think, not far.
  11:16pm Dean:

Used to be a "hippie store" (we called it a head shop) across the street from my junior high school in Whittier, Hair Boutique, c.'73. I got a real kick out of it.
  11:16pm chresti:

Funky- there are hawks on patrol-there have been incidents with little dogs getting snatched but usually they go for rabbits and blonde pony tails
  11:17pm Dean:

Not far from there in '78 I started work at a record store where the manager played disco incessantly. I fucking hated it, except for Giorgio Moroder's contributions. By now I've adjusted to, for instance, the Bee Gees.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm Funky16Corners:

@Chresti - We just had a neighborhod hysteria (on the NextDoor board) about hawks that could supposedly carry off fairly large dogs. People had to have it explained to them that most of the hawks around here weigh less than 6 pounds and while they may kill a bird or squirrel or two, your puppies are safe.

Oh, Hey Dean. Gotta tell you. last night had a chile colorado burrito from this place in East Pasadena that was inedible. Nuclear waste disguised as food. But I was hungry, man! I ate it anyway with no ill effects.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm Funky16Corners:

That said, we had one kill a mourning dove out in front of our house. It looked like the dove exploded
  11:23pm Dean:

I miss LA nuclear waste Mexican fare, FT. I was in town two or three weeks ago to attend a buddy's birthday party in Arcadia at Villa Catrina. It was great, but I spent most of my time visiting with folks. Would love to know where the killer chile colorado burrito was served. Wait...was it Colorado Blvd.?
  11:25pm Dean:

I'm noticing that comment boards in general, but this show in particular, tend to prompt discussion of good local food.
Avatar 11:25pm Jeff Ash:

The great Dennis Coffey originally co-produced this group.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - Yes indeed. Great album, too.
Avatar 11:27pm Jeff Ash:

I haven't picked it up, perhaps fearing I will be that guy, the Dennis Coffey completist.
  11:27pm chresti:

Yeah , the tiny chihuahuas and poodles are prey for red tail hawks and coyotes here.

I’ve seen a coyote carrying a cat on the street in LA before-
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm Funky16Corners:

You could do a lot worse than finding all the records Coffey worked on
  11:27pm chresti:

@funky Larry
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm Funky16Corners:

@Chresti - coyotes are starting to show up around here
Avatar 11:28pm Jeff Ash:

Oh, I know. I already have a bunch of his records.
Avatar 11:29pm Franco Twinkie:

You got it! Super Burrito - just west of Rosemead Blvd. Actually, I really like the place, most things are good in that greasy-good kinda way. I just decided to try something new instead of the same old, same old, and lost. No biggie! I'll be back there next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm Funky16Corners:

Jeff, were you listening the night I played the Del Shannon record co-written by Coffey?
  11:30pm Dean:

Just realized, FT, that you wrote "inedible," when I read, "incredible." You meant nuclear waste quite literally. Accordingly, would love to know what to avoid!
Avatar 11:30pm Franco Twinkie:

  11:31pm Dean:

Rosemead makes me think of Bahuka, no longer there, I believe.
  11:32pm Dean:

Eh, Bahooka.
Avatar 11:33pm Franco Twinkie:

Yes, It's gone. Now it's some sort of buffet. Haven't been inside. Still looks pretty damn crazy from the outside.
Avatar 11:33pm Jeff Ash:

Checking it out now. Don't think I caught that show. Nice!
  11:34pm Dean:

Bahooka was a hoot. As was Kelbo's in Hollywood. Heard NON at the latter. One amazing evening.
Avatar 11:35pm northguineahills:

Got back in time!
Avatar 11:35pm Jeff Ash:

Larry, have a good evening. Enjoyed this! Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks Jeff!
Avatar 11:37pm Franco Twinkie:

Of course! Non and Monitor really did a special twist on the tiki thing. We went to a reunion type deal of those folks last year downtown L.A.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm doctorjazz:

Love this version of If You could Read My Mind, Great!
  11:39pm Dean:

Seriously?! Heard Monitor, too, and Nervous Gender at Al's Bar, where I used to do homework.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks Doc!
Avatar 11:41pm Franco Twinkie:

Yup, all those band. Usta go to Al's all the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm Funky16Corners:

There's a weird remake of it on the '54' soundtrack. I don't know if they couldn't get the rights or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm doctorjazz:

Reading a depressing report by Elizabeth Warren on her visit to the refugee "detention centers", more accurately known as cages. Man......
  11:43pm Dean:

I left LA in 2001. Al's shut down shortly thereafter. I haven't gotten over it. Al's was my home venue.
Avatar 11:43pm northguineahills:

@coel: The tick species that carry lyme here in FL, are very rare, and don't survive very well (for reasons I've yet to to research), so, until they evolve, (the bacteria or the tick, I'm mostly safe for now).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm doctorjazz:

Donna!!!!! Going out with a bang!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm Funky16Corners:

One more important one after this, then nighty nite
Avatar 11:46pm Franco Twinkie:

You can't imagine what it's like down there now. But, The Box, which is across the street is still carrying the torch when you need to have that type of friction.
  11:46pm chresti:

No auto tune needed with Donna!
Avatar 11:47pm northguineahills:

Moroder en el casa!
Avatar 11:47pm geezerette:

Larry, this list will be playing again while we bbq on the fourth.

Hey Dean,Coel,Chresti,NGH,FT,Jeff,Doc & anyone I missed; g'night!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks for listening Geezerette!
  11:48pm Dean:

No, I know what's going on. Pisses me off. Do you remember the airplane hanging from the wall outside Al's?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm doctorjazz:

Night, Geezerette!
Avatar 11:50pm Franco Twinkie:

Yes! I could tell you some stories...but not here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm doctorjazz:

The beginning of the end for live musicians (at least the need for as many).
Avatar 11:51pm northguineahills:

errr.., la casa. hablo espanol como un gringo...
  11:51pm Dean:

A story: on my marriage day, my wife and I headed to Al's and hung out with friends for the evening. This was post-airplane, 2000.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm Funky16Corners:

@Doc - The first time Brian Eno heard 'I Feel Love' in a club he pegged it as revolutionary
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm doctorjazz:

It was!
  11:53pm Dean:

Revolutionary? I'm sorry, but Eno needed to get out more often.
  11:53pm chresti:

From the age of hi shine lip gloss
Avatar 11:53pm Franco Twinkie:

Larry! This show was extra, extra special. Got me back on the good foot. Thanks, bro.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm Funky16Corners:

THIS, this right here, this is the bang!
Avatar 11:53pm northguineahills:

Finishing (starting, and everything in b/tn, strong! en fuego!)
  11:53pm Dean:

(I'm not an Eno fan.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks Franco!
  11:54pm chresti:

Geez! Goodnight!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm Funky16Corners:

@DEan - It changed the face of dance music in a big way. Paved the way for High NRG, House and new wave dance.
Avatar 11:56pm northguineahills:

Moroder mixing donna, holy scheisser, you should hear the extended mix...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm doctorjazz:

Thanks, Larry, danced up a good sweat! Night all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks Doc!
Avatar 11:56pm northguineahills:

Night Larry, geezerette was full of good ideas, good 4th sndtrk material...!!!
  11:57pm Dean:

This assumes that the face of dance music is the measure of real change. I don't buy it.
Avatar 11:57pm geezerette:

I remember that airplane. :)
About Al's demise, I've lost a whole ecosystem of galleries and dealers/gallerists that were oases for me too. Know whatcha mean, Dean.
  11:58pm Dean:

Doesn't mean it's not enjoyable.
Avatar 11:58pm northguineahills:

@Dean:Jaques Attali would beg to answer (Mitterand's economist and cultural theorist).
  11:59pm Dean:

I know Noise.
Avatar 12:00am northguineahills:

Avatar 12:02am northguineahills:

The Crowley extended mix of I Feel Love is amazing
Avatar 12:02am still b/p:

Had to return to headphones a number of times to enjoy tracks more closely....some of them in that category of "indifferent then, stirring and fun now." Thanks!
Avatar 12:02am northguineahills:

errr... Cowley...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02am Funky16Corners:

Thanks SBP!
  12:02am Dean:

This is a viable model: five hours every other hour from each DJ!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03am Funky16Corners:

I don't think I could do this every week.
  12:04am Dean:

Every *other* week...
  12:05am chresti:

Goodnight every one!
Thanks Larry
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05am Funky16Corners:
