Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Uncle Michael’s Pimento Cheese Spread/Dip

8 oz. grated orange extra sharp cheddar (not any fancy brand!)
4 oz. cream cheese, room temperature
4 oz. mayonnaise
1 tsp. hot sauce (I prefer Melinda’s Original Habanero XXXtra Hot Sauce)
2-4 scallions (depending on size) finely sliced
1 four-ounce jar of diced pimientos (if substituting roasted red peppers, add a ¼ tsp salt)

With a hand mixer, cream the cream cheese, mayo and hot sauce.
Fold in grated cheddar, scallions and pimientos

It's just after noon in Philadelphia.

In my old Italian neighborhood in Brooklyn, they called spaghetti sauce "gravy." Hello Uncle Michael and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Goyim in the AM:

Hey hey UM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Uncle Michael:

Can you her me?!
  12:06pm Dean:

Wow, the OED entry for "gravy" is remarkable. One possible cognate of the root word is grenade! And the term describing an inferior dressing is "gravy bastard." Dibs on that for my next band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Good morning everyone! This Philly song is really something...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Doug Schulkind:

Benny's German, so you'd pronounce his name Grabe and the song as Grabefruit -- and in a lot of German dialects, differences between p and b are sloppy anyway. Germans sure do love their puns.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Uncle Michael:

I love the comments. It's like a Chautauqua!
  12:48pm dan:

@Goyim. In more linguistic terms, the bilabial voiceless "p" is pronounced like its equivalent bilabial voiced "b".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Goyim in the AM:

@dan -- I'm a polyglot, not a linguist. It's like the Sharks and the Jets!
  12:50pm dan:

@Goyim That would make an interesting concept. Polyglots vs. Linguists.

Dammit, Dan. I'm a polyglot...not a *linguist*. - Bones McCoy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Goyim in the AM:

But yeah, when it's just folks talkin', B tends to stay voiceless, and the voiced bilabial is not nearly as strong in Hochdeutsch as it is in standard American academic English.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Rich in Washington:

I wish that a BluRay reissue of MMMV had all those music cues, the theme song, etc., as a bonus feature.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm Rich in Washington:

I really love the Tornados version. I cannot resist buying it whenever I come across it on 45. It's the first song I remember hearing as a small lad and thinking 'this music's from another planet!'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm The Oscar:

@Rich Shout Factory put out a decent DVD a few years back, with commentary my Mitch Glazer and some Mr. Mike SNL clips. Sadly, Sid Vicious' performance is still silenced.

I remember watching the first Telstar broadcast with my parents
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Webhamster Henry:

Seek out Gaylord's At A Loss For Words WFMU Premium for many , many lyrics for otherwise instrumental hits!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Rich in Washington:

I have that DVD. It's quite good. It's a miracle it came out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Rich in Washington:

The funny thing about MMMV is that they just stole Telstar as its leitmotif throughout the show, sort of like Ortolani and the More/Mondo Cane theme.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Webhamster Henry:

My ex-wife's old boyfriend Dennis Perrin did an obsessive book on Mr. Mike.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Webhamster Henry:

So I guess that makes me about 3 degrees of separation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm The Oscar:

@Rich Yeah, when I finally saw Mondo Cane years later I was struck by how close a parody it was (O'Donoghue's spin on "Many of these men have tasted human flesh" is particularly brillant).
Avatar 1:15pm βrian:

I see y'all have been giving voice to bilabial fricatives.

Avatar 1:49pm βrian:

"Norway goat cheese fire closes tunnel":

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Wendy del Formaggio:

@Brian, there are cultural/regional reasons for adding annatto to cheddar in the US. It adds no flavor or texture to the cheese, thus it doesn't change it. Therefore, looking down on orange cheese is simple snobbery.
Avatar 1:54pm βrian:

Shelburne Farms makes good cheese. Used to live nearby.
Avatar 1:55pm βrian:

Nope. It's an industrial affectation. About as cultural as scale-tipping.
Avatar 1:57pm βrian:

Is this from the movie, UM?
  1:59pm Dean:

I dunno. I read recipes that call for turmeric or, remarkably, paprika, noting that the ingredients add nothing flavor-wise, but give color. To my untrained palette, both have flavors, but I could be making it up. Still, adding solely for color seems...fair.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Uncle Michael:

I feel like I might be the target of a put-on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Wendy del Formaggio:

@Brian. I disagree. "An industrial affectation" that's been around for, I dunno, almost a century is indeed a cultural and regional difference. It was people who were running these industries, not robots.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Uncle Michael:

Every recipe I've ever seen for cochinita pibil calls for annato. Industrial affectation? Perhaps.
Avatar 2:04pm βrian:

Wha? In any case, if you haven't seen that movie, it's worth watching.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm Uncle Michael:

my npr.org link above is about the history of orange cheddar...17th century.
Avatar 2:07pm βrian:

Yes, duplicity goes back centuries. Heh! But I understand it's no longer perceived as cheating; just making it look a certain way.

I would just say, hearken back a bit further and let the cheese show it's natural colors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm The Oscar:

I'll vouch for LTROI. It's a surprisingly sweet and heartfelt Swedish vampire film.

Howdy! I didn't write down the pimento cheese spread recipe but we did get some work done on a skate ramp. It's softened cream cheese, sharp cheddar, salsa and pimentos, right? Do you grate the cheddar?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Uncle Michael:

I'll type and post it next week. This is a now a saga.
Avatar 2:25pm Sem:

@Sweet Corn Lizzie: Maybe this critic has an answer: " Critic Tim Sendra, in his album review of The Sonny Side of Cher, gave the song a mixed review: "The only track that has any real zest is the Bono-written novelty 'Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down),' the kind of dramatic song Cher could knock out in her sleep but also a song with no real heart."
So, WTH: Sonny going for surface, not substance.
  2:26pm rw:
