A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Oh my goodness! Trouble! I wanted to let you know that thanks to your help, I acquired my first Jean-Claude Laroche bird album last weekend! I picked it up at a Radio Shack record store about an hour and a half away from me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am N.A.R.D.:

I think I asked you about it three or four weeks ago and I've been scouring local record stores/thrift shops ever since.

Ah, I see the donut infection has receded across the schedule. I had half-expected the name of this program to become This Is the Modern Donut. Well, except that Ken knows better than to mess w/you, I'd imagine. Heh.

But this is the modern donut.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am N.A.R.D.:

It's the only Radio Shack I've ever seen that sells records, to be honest, and their electronics merchandise is a bit *ahem* dated, but they're still in business while all the others around it are closing, so they must be doing something right...

i'm enjoying this, sonically, but i've just been exploring the topic of misogyny (and general corruption) in Buddhism (particularly the Tibetan tradition), quite troubling... has anyone else looked into this? Avatar 9:48am Itzall Ablurr:

Dear themutante, I also enjoy Lech. During the somewhat-successful 95 Olympics® here in Atlanta, there was a Polish contingent holding camp in my neighborhood with kegs of Lech, free to all takers! That was for sure the best memory of the Olympics, though the fire ants at the mountain bike race were pretty memorable too.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am melinda:

@Canterbury no, where are you looking? Seems there is some corruption everywhere.

Avatar 10:00am Itzall Ablurr:

Fire ants are the very minions of Satan. They are organized and vicious and only attack as a group, generally. The bites (stings, really) are itchy, painful and can last for weeks. Pretty good for "the meek". My wife and I managed to avoid destruction but brushed against a mound while trekking alongside the mtn. bike trails. Yowch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Webhamster Henry:

Avatar 10:03am themutante:

Not to mention the weather that rolls in off the gulf of Mexico. @NARD
Avatar 10:06am themutante:

Is there a website that lists all the WFMU Premiums with tracklisting?
Avatar 10:06am the Canterbury wood-elf:

@melinda It started with Karen Armtrong's "Buddha" biography, citing the Pali canon. There are apologists who explain away the various sutras, but it's pretty obviously misogyny to me (although it may not reflect the historical reality of what the Buddha said/did). Then, looking around online, I found this
...an online book that at first appears to be a "hit piece" on the Dalai Lama, Chinese state propaganda I guessed at first, but then reading it opened a whole can of worms. The Scottish nun June Campbell's account of being in a sexually abusive relation with a 70 year old, deeply revered, supposedly celibate lama (under the guise of being some kind of tantric "consort" ) was really eye opening. She teaches religious studies and women's studies now and is really worth checking out.

  10:14am JakeGould:

@themutante: Some are in Discogs. Some listeners enter the track details that end up in CD databases on line so tracks show up when the CDs are inserted into a computer or player. But the reality is these “CDs” are more akin to homegrown mix tapes and are not real CDs in any way. So it’s a crapshoot at best to find a comprehensive list.

So many sad and painful stories shared in regards to Ireland's abortion, why do we want that here in the US? (Spoiler: oh, i can guess)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am steveo:

is bagpipes jazz?
  10:16am JakeGould:

@theCanterburywood-elf: If you are going to come out of nowhere and start accusing Buddhism of being misogynist, as others have stated, this is nothing new. And the main appeal of Buddhism is it’s an alternative to the Judeo-Chistian structure that seems to dominate the Western world. It’s not perfect, but it’s something else.

youtube has some "bagpipe jazz" selections which I will explore at a later date; i hope they are still droney, because that's the best part, innit?
  10:23am JakeGould:

That said, one of the saddest and sweetest things I have ever seen is a lone tuba player playing his tuba in the Broadway-Lafayette Street subway station about 15 years or so ago.

It was sweet, because he was unaccompanied and passionate. It was sad because the sound was horrible and people were visibly holding their ears. The look on his face was so… “I wanna share my tuba… But I don’t know how?”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am N.A.R.D.:

Avatar 10:30am βrian:

@JakeGould: That reminds me of the harmonica player on the diag at univ. of Michigan. He was wildly enthusiastic but had no sense of music whatsoever. The effect was like having one's ears wire-brushed.

We were impelled to start a "Harmoniku" movement, based on Honku.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am N.A.R.D.:

@Itzall, that's true also! As much as I complain, I wouldn't ever want to leave. And in addition to all the art and music, I would certainly die if the temperature ever dropped below 40F in the winter.

@melinda and @cuteCloud The online book I linked is strange, controversial (but full of fascinating references you can follow up yourself). The authors used to tour and work with the Dalai Lama but became convinced that Tibetan vajrayana Buddhism had degenerated into a giant, secretive sex cult... and that the Tibetan clergy-in-exile, hiding behind the friendly face of HH, is using ritual magick to influence world affairs. So make of it what you will...

On the bright side, it ("Ain't No Mountain") will always be her "new one" for you now!

Trouble -- the Brooklyn Botanic Garden has another interesting-sounding bird-related event coming up on June 21

"Join us for the world premiere of Twilight Chorus (for Humans), a new vocal work composed by Pete M. Wyer. Inspired by MIT professor Shigeru Miyagawa’s theory that human speech evolved from birdsong, Wyer’s score features slowed-down transcripts of birdsong field recordings adapted for a choir of 16 human voices."

@canterbury sounds juicy!
Avatar 11:15am themutante:

There should be more crossover with the dj's in the same way that Clay hijacks the first 15mins of Maddie Wawicks slot.
Avatar 11:15am themutante:

It's radio gold.

@steveo thanks for the link (I used to live over by the BBG, I miss it a lot)

Thx for the Times piece recommendation. Makes me wonder what connections there might be between oral antibiotics and autoimmune diseases of the digestive tract, like Crohn's Disease, which my daughter has. Added it to my pile of research.

Hi trouble!
Love this Spanish fly track, Scott Williams played it sometime a year ago and I listened to it on the archive at least a dozen times!
That le tigre song is great too- politics and the French, right up your alley!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Trouble:

@kevlicki: missed you at interference archive this weekend< show looked great!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Passaic River Blues:

Yo, Steve O, thank you for the link to the BBG performance. I'm scanning through some of this guy Shigeru Miyagawa's articles online and it's a treasure trove.

Nice to hear Space / Magic Fly played through as a whole song.

Who used to use it as bed / interstitial music? I was assuming Fabio, but was it Scott, @kevlicki?

This remix is AMAZING
Avatar 11:50am βrian:

It is. I generally don't care for clubby music, but this works.

Had to stop screenprinting and start dancing
  11:52am kevlicki:

Thanks, so glad you made it by to see it!!!
What do you think of the new space?
Avatar 11:53am Itzall Ablurr:

Speaking of swags, is this a call to action or will I simply be showered with random awesomeness soon?

Tony Humphries really made his name as a DJ at the storied Newark club, Zanzibar (housed in the old Lincoln Motel near the Broad Street train station, now an empty lot). His Zanzibar mixes often feature tracks like that Nina remix.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Ike:

@PRB, wow, there was a club here? I work right next to there, near the billboard.
Avatar 11:57am themutante:

Cheers, Trouble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am Mick:

Have not been able to join in the chat, but thanks for another great show, Trouble. @Steveo, thanks for the BBG tip - that sounds astonishing!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Passaic River Blues:

@Ike: yeah, the Bergers owned it (they're the guys who own lots of rundown motels but also the Robert Treat and a bunch of downtown around Military Park like the MP Bldg, Firemen Ins., and the old Griffith Piano Bldg.). Zanzibar seems like it was actually pretty amazing. It's the lot across from Bears Stadium with a billboard saying something like "AMAZING DEVELOPMENT SITE! CONTACT BRENDAN BERGER!"

I'm glad others found the info useful. I plan to go; should I wear an FMU shirt or a fancier one?

The other thing was a silent bird listening walk in Prospect Park at sunrise and it was quite lovely and I was the only one who showed up besides the organizers because it was pouring rain -- we just walked around slowly, not talking and listening to birds and other sounds.

Dang noon already? Fantastic show THANK YOU.
