I remember this Salt N' Pepa album came out when I was in third or fourth grade-- it's one of the first albums that I can remember a) being everywhere, and b) pretty much everyone agreeing on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm fred:

Good afternoon Sheila and all. Nice hearing Salt 'n' Pepa. Brings back memories
Avatar 3:25pm N.A.R.D.:

@The Oscar, I can remember hearing that album for the first time in the backseat of my babysitter's late 70s Buick. Her son had just bought it on cassette and was excited to put it on.
  3:25pm SeanG:

Yo Sheila B! ya gotta DJ in Boston some time! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Guido from Cologne:

i was a bit puzzled:
"Very Necessary" is from 1993.
that fits my memory.

(on mobile and not properly signed in but) Sheila it was lovely to meet you Friday night at the record fair! You served a great beer :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm The Oscar:

@Guido That fits with mine, too, unless it was a long-gestating sleeper hit.
Avatar 3:29pm N.A.R.D.:

Oh man! That's what I was thinking too, @Guido, @The Oscar, I didn't even notice the playlist said 1989. That was a completely different babysitter in 89.

Yami, you rule! Sad to read in the newsletter you'll be leaving, and hoping you'll be down at the station to volunteer here and there as you can!
Avatar 3:30pm N.A.R.D.:

In 1989 I would've been more interested in Sing-Along Silly Songs and Raffi than in Salt n' Pepa
Avatar 3:33pm N.A.R.D.:

Oh Sheila! Maybe people are looking for songs that degrade women for research?
Avatar 3:33pm N.A.R.D.:

At least that's what I want to believe

Avatar 3:41pm northguineahills:

Pic-Nic, new to me!
Avatar 3:42pm Will from Seattle:

I'm pretty sure this song is using an American folk melody I've hear before, but I can't put my finger on it. I remember hearing Pete Seeger doing it maybe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Guido from Cologne:

Seems like this is Jeanette singing.
  3:42pm Yami:

Thank you @listener James from Westwood , I will be around this summer for sure
Avatar 3:42pm djsheilab:

Will from Seattle—It's "Tiny Sparrow!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Guido from Cologne:

Jeanette of "Porque Te Vas" fame ... big hit over here.
Avatar 3:43pm djsheilab:

Guido from Cologne—Pic-Nic was Jeanette's first band.
Avatar 3:43pm Will from Seattle:

oh right. The pete seeger version is called 'come all ye fair & tender ladies'
Avatar 3:43pm N.A.R.D.:

@Will, I can definitely remember Peter, Paul, and Mary (maybe?) singing that! Thanks DJ Sheila B! I was in the same spot! Couldn't remember what it was!
Avatar 3:44pm djsheilab:

I think that "Tiny Sparrow" / "Come All Ye Fair...." comes from a very old English folk song. I think Joan Baez's "Silver Dagger" has the same melody. And Saint Etienne's "Like A Motorway."
Avatar 3:45pm djsheilab:

Thanks D. Lightfoot!
Avatar 3:46pm djsheilab:

Francoise Hardy also has an English-language memoir coming out: www.amazon.com...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm mrdonutsu:

If you're only going to see one Chess musical...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Guido from Cologne:

Had no idea that this was Murray Head.
Heard it a million times ... must admit i had to ... it was on a mix tape played over and over in a car on a journey.
  4:00pm SeanG:

those trumpet synths
Avatar 4:01pm N.A.R.D.:

I didn't know Murray Head played Judas, I have a hard time picturing anyone other than Carl Anderson in that role. He even played Judas when I saw it live.
Avatar 4:02pm northguineahills:

I know that song very well, but never heard of Murray Head.
  4:03pm modchick65:

Hi everyone. It's weird how "One Night In Bangkok" takes me back to my junior high school. Like, I'm back IN the school. The hallways, the dances, etc. It's so much more than just the memories associated with other songs. I guess because I've not really listened to that song that much apart from in that specific period of time/context.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2020 Swag For Life Member 4:03pm listener james from westwood:

In the pre-search days, a friend asked me who the hell did this song. It took 2 months, but while I was in L.A., it came on the radio, and I frantically looked up the station's phone # in the hotel room phonebook (yes) and got the DJ, then called at god-knows-what-rates back to my friend in NJ to tell her. Elaborate!! Now that's like 10 seconds stem to stern by way of smartphone research and texting the answer.
Avatar 4:05pm N.A.R.D.:

@NGH, that's literally the only song I know by Murray Head
Avatar 4:05pm D. Lightfoot:

I really liked that Whyte Horses. Once again, you are my conduit to diggable new stuff I would never come across otherwise
  4:06pm P-90:

Ahhh... the "pre-search" days... the smell of those hotel phone books...
  4:08pm P-90:

Wait, the Turkish music whiz is from Krakow?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Ken From Hyde Park:

For a question like "What's the capital city of Guatemala and what is its population?" you'd have to go to a library and find an encyclopedia. Now you speak the question into your phone or your home's always-listening device and you get the answer in a second.
Avatar 4:10pm northguineahills:

@Ken: such technology make my only cognitive talent obsolete, my bros. joke.
Avatar 4:11pm N.A.R.D.:

KFHP, I used to have my Broderbund Almanac for those questions
Avatar 4:11pm N.A.R.D.:

I actually still have it, but I imagine a few things may have changed since 1991...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm Passaic River Blues:

Keen insight, Kornelia!
  4:16pm Cecile:

I thought they were a little more progressive...
Avatar 4:17pm N.A.R.D.:

@Cecile, they are a bit more progressive compared to most middle-eastern countries, but compared to women in most Western countries they are still very far behind
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm frozen_peas:

  4:37pm Cecile:

omg. Gul was the name of my high school friend. She passed away last year. It means Rose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Passaic River Blues:

@NGH: definitely. Selda, Baris Manco, Nese Alkan. I don't know much but music by any of them from the 1970s is tough to beat.
  4:38pm Jocelyn:

That was such a powerful conversation
Avatar 4:38pm ncjay:

@Cecile, Sezen Aksu has a beautiful song called "Gullerim Soldu" = "My Roses Have Faded" from 1990 or so.

@ Rob, that is very kind of you to have tried. Adrian managed to get it after RSD, but not after queuing for HOURS on the day!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Rob Kopp:

@ Contessa: The least I could do was try. My personal goal was the single by Chris Bell (I am the cosmos / You and your sister), but it wasn't delivered in the Netherlands anywhere. But I managed to get it on Ebay.

@Rob, I hope you didn't have to pay too much over the original price! Adrian said things he wanted were on eBay while he was still queuing

@Contessa. Paid 10. Far less than the amounts you see on Popsike for the original issue from the 70's.

There was a sweet shop in Chicago back in the 70s run by red-headed triplets. I don’t recall the name.
