A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

if you do the Russian sauna (banya), you are supposed to be whipped with bundles of tree branches to encourage your circulation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am melinda:

I was going to attempt a series of sauna sessions at a local spa/salon to see if it would help with my chronic health problems but it was too much hassle for uncertain returns. Many sick people have their own FIR saunas at home and swear by them.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am N.A.R.D.:

Everything is coming up aces today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am melinda:

@b/p thanks. I think it was the hassle more than the $, the spa was only $10 per session which seemed like a good deal, especially for the far-infrared type which is supposed to be easier to handle than steam.
Avatar 10:04am Itzall Ablurr:

steveo, I saw a (very) old "Ed Sullivan" show a few weeks ago featuring Tom Jones, he has an amazing voice. I know it was not considered "cool" to like him when he was popular, but I've always thought he was a fantastic entertainer. I think he may still be alive?
Avatar 10:05am Sem:

Itzall Ablurr: Ton entertained at the Queens 92nd birthday party the other day. Still kickin'!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am sphere:

Avatar 10:07am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Itzall-there is a youtube video of Toom Jones singing a Buffalo Springfield (?) or some other Neil Young band tune. It.is.amazing. I don't care if people think Tom Jones is "corny", I think he is stellar, too. I also like Styx and Abba, un-ironically.
Avatar 10:08am Wild Neil||Peace All:

This Wooden Shjips is really outstanding. Space rock!
Avatar 10:11am Itzall Ablurr:

Sem, sphere & Wild, glad to hear and I need to check out some of his vids. I was blown away at the range and power at his command watching him on Sullivan. I'd go see him in a heartbeat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Mick:

Loving today's show! Tom Jones' take on Prince's 'Kiss' turned my head pretty fast when I first heard it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am steveo:

@itzall yeah he still gets that; my uncles were making fun (on FB) of this jam Jones did with CSNY that was excellent (speaking of wooden sh[j]ips, ha). Maybe the problem was that his hair was too short.
Avatar 10:12am Itzall Ablurr:

Hey, it's the Night SWEETS!!! haha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am steveo:

oh yeah, neil, i think that we're talking about the same thing www.youtube.com...
Avatar 10:14am Itzall Ablurr:

steveo, there truly is no accounting for taste, in my humble opinion. I'm sure there are people out there who don't enjoy The Shaggs... more for us!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am sphere:

Rateliff and the Night Sweats are on Stax! Interesting.
  10:17am still b/p:

Always happy to re-recommend Captain Tom Speedo Jones on a perfect four-star voyage right here:

Avatar 10:20am Itzall Ablurr:

Haha - just like heaven.
  10:29am exile-on-hicks-st:

Always loved that descending guitar of the orig.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am steveo:

Neil? The front page, really? I really thought it was from my uncles. It jumped into the collective consciousness for a moment, I suppose.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am melinda:

I checked out the speedo vid and it seems hilariously amateurish, actually, I agree it is a day-brightener.
  10:42am queems:

one of the reasons i haven’t gotten more into collecting records is because i’m a hoarder and once i have something in my collection there is a zero percent chance i will get rid of it
  10:45am queems:

i related hardcore to the struggle of deciding to get rid of something and then changing your mind
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am steveo:

<-- little Tom Jones can really dance to this
Avatar 10:46am Itzall Ablurr:

Dear queems, I'm sure I am not alone (especially HERE) in saying that I have ALL of the records I bought when I first started buying music in the late 70s. Yes, that's FOUR DECADES of "collecting", and that's not even to mention the Niagra of CDs, cassettes, 8-tracks (!), etc. that I still have. Dear lord.
Avatar 10:47am Itzall Ablurr:

little, I mean regular sized STEVEO, that's fantastic! He ain't missing a beat.
  10:48am queems:

@itzall that warms my hoarder heart
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am steveo:

he's gonna love fabio, too
Avatar 10:52am Itzall Ablurr:

queems, there was a brief period, during my bleak times as an art student when I *choke* sold some of my LPs to a record store for pittance. Of course I have since re-purchased most of them at a substantially inflated rate! This show, in particular, is to blame for so many $$ spent on new ones!
Avatar 10:54am northguineahills:

@Itzall Ablurr: I only have the early 90s to 2010, when my wife put a moratorium of me buying music, as we were running out of room. I can only acquire physical musical media now via live events and WFMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am sphere:

The best thing about digital is that you can store a LOT of audio in a terabyte.
  10:58am queems:

even though i have all of my music backed up on 2 external hard drives i’m always worried that i’m going to lose it somehow. like all at once, 90% of my music is gone

my parents’ bought a house from 1803 down the block from the house i grew up in because some developer wanted to buy it to knock it down and build. my sister lives there now

My house was built in 1942-3. I don't often think about the original inhabitants but I do wonder what the original kitchen and bathroom looked like. Most of the houses on my street have the same floorplan, with the mirror-image plan on the other side of the street.

i just moved from an 1864 farmhouse to a 5 year old prefab structure. it seems so incredibly shoddy & poorly designed!! unbelievable.

I usually find folks who need to use metaphors to make their point don't have much of a point. (re: the orange)

At least they probably obtain permits to demolish buildings in Jersey City. In Newark, the Parking Lot Lords (the odious Edison Parking and J&L Parking) will acquire a building adjacent to an existing lot and then just tear it down. No permit. No plan. Then they wait a decent interval and pave it over to enlarge the original lot. It's utterly insane.

Zoning laws often won't permit multi-residence buildings in residential 'hoods. But we have seen a lot of "in-law" apartments built over garages, and second stories added to single-story post war homes.

My old Billyburg apt was new but shoddily constructed, every corner cut (no baseboard on one side of my bedroom). Landlord was impossible to talk to get anything done, but it was at least large for the neighborhood and close to the L.

@melinda my new house was built in 1950 and it still has the original bathroom. pink tile galore

Trouble, there's an amazing article from current affairs magazine called "why you hate contemporary architecture" that I think you would love based on what you just said. (Not sure what rules are on links so I didn't include it)
regarding that awful free-market orange metaphor the article has a relevant bit where they say " The physical environment in which we live and work, however, is ubiquitous and inescapable; when it comes to architecture, it is nigh-impossible for people to simply avoid the things they hate and seek out the things they like."

Basically we deserve and should fight for beauty in architecture!
Avatar 11:53am northguineahills:

@melinda: my 1943 house's floor plan is totally different from the original (found a digital copy at the city tax appraisers site). The only thing from the original is the outside structural edifice.

Much of the same sort of discussion you're talking about went on in comments to Mayor Fulop's original social media post about this demolition cooling-off period.

Two or three people - well, one in particular - repeatedly referred to this (and indeed I assume any attempt at actual urban planning) with words like "marxist", "communist", and "totalitarian".

Thanks for the city council story! Agree wholly with Melinda & queems, etc. about orange analogy. Finally finished 'Left Bank of the Hudson,' which was brilliant re. the topics you bring up.

americans look at being told what to do as the ultimate wrong, how crazy is that? we live with laws and rules all around us, but change sparks insanity in some people...

offered real freedom from rules, most of us would be absolutely traumatized..
  11:58am Ochre Ogre:

Yep, happening all over, I've witnessed it dramatically in W/burg Brooklyn; and apparently some developers on large projects get a huge tax break! And zoning laws change to accommodate them.

I keep hoping In vain the local paper will show images of some of the many apartments/condos built in the recent booming years, and have the architects AND objective ones explain the redundant visual vocabulary, the e-z kit appearance, leading to the yawn response and generic environment. Costs are a factor, sure. What else? Past building styles had sameness — brick blocks and 3-deckers. But we really can’t hope for better?
