Memphis? I've heard that city had some influence.

Heya Gaylord. I like anyone named Furry.

@TDK60: Perhaps my guest can persuade you that is so. Interview starts at 20 after the hour.

Greetings DJ Gaylord. I was being funny. Went to a blues fest in Memphis in 1972. "Crossed the tracks" to a neighborhood blues juke joint. Wow!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm
tom from Glasgow:

ha! no no, it's ok, that's what archives are for after all, but it's very well suited to its timeslot. i was just thinking of when i would get ready to go back to school on Sunday nights in the 90s and i'd listen to this show on BBC Radio 1 that would specifically play album tracks from stuff in the album charts, and that too seemed really well suited to when it was programmed. Samantha's is great as an early evening programme too, but again, same unfortunate 5-hour offset
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm

@Cooh John: Welcome!
  8:58pm
Brian in New Orleans:

New Orleans is still great , yes but gentrification has taken a big toll along with AirBnB on the historic neighborhoods of Treme, Bywater, and Fauberg Marigny, the neighborhoods that fill the club's stages with brass bands and Mardi Gras Indians are slowly being decimated....just saying. it IS still magic here but is in a very fragile state
Avatar 8:59pm
northguineahills:

@Jake: That's the story I heard, I just wish I didn't have to revisit that headspace.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm

How about a field guide to the gritty and obscure clubs in Memphis?

Drunken Creep:

An engaging and interesting interview, hitting the ears just right after a long day. I love that second hand quote "Turn down the bad, turn up the good", pertinent to mixing music as well as general living. A fine listen, different from the usual sunday evening, yet great once again
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Drunken Creep: That should be put on a plaque and placed in every recording studio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm
tom from Glasgow:

why was there a Yogi Berra and a Yogi Bear? one of the strangest aspects of American culture, for me
  9:13pm
Brian in New Orleans:

I will Gaylord!....also an overlooked dynamic, including whomever books Jazz Fest is the strength of local hip hop. most young kids in the city live for hip hop not the Juke Joint lifestyle even brass bands. still ONLY in our wonderful weird city could "sissybounce" be a driving cultural movement!!!
  9:14pm
the illuminated void:

first time i heard some sun recording compilation was in a squat on the lower east side like 3rd and E. It was a cassette i think he might have taped from someone else. My friend
has past now bad drug habit. peace to Bob RIP
  9:14pm
Brian in New Orleans:

...can "Sissybounce" be born!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm
Gaylord Fields:

@tom from Glasgow: I believe the confusion started with Yogi Bhagwan stealing picnic baskets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Brian in New Orleans: As long as NOLA can still produce a Big Freedia, we may be okay after all.
  9:16pm
JakeGould:

If that is the most confusing aspect of American culture to you Tom, either you are a ahead of the curve or very behind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm
tom from Glasgow:

no no, i only said "one of". but still, putting that together from cultural fragments in the pre-internet era was a trip

@Gaylord....Big Freedia is so "big"...that his/her picture is prominently displayed on a huge billboard on Interstate 10 as you enter the city..Now of course it is for a lawyers advertisement showcasing her as a client in a tax scandal, cause you know New Orleans!! LOL

Listening for the second time today, after reading the book as a result of listening for the first time. I suggested it to my local library when I found they didn't have it and they ordered it immediately and put it on hold for me to borrow! So there ya go.
