Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05am kuba:

uh, guess i'm a bit early? hello future everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Parq:

Hi, Kuba. The wonder of it all, hey?
Avatar 4:02pm Sem:

Woo hoo! Hiya, David, kuba, Parq.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm David D:

Greetings Sem, Parq, and Kuba of the past!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Parq:

David, is that your Leipzig studio or is that a shot of those guys from somewhere else?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm David D:

Parq: That is my view at this very moment (without the guys).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Parq:

Okay, then, I gotta ask - what in the world is that hanging behind them? By the way, I love the sound of a bass clarinet so dang much -- this is gonna be great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm David D:

That is a big "radio" tuned to Radio Blau. I don't think it works, though.
Avatar 4:15pm geezerette:

The sort of liturgical underpinning with the wry bob-and-weave of
of a stand up comic is so layered & historically complex.
Of course, the same could be said of many kinds of music.
Avatar 4:18pm geezerette:

These guys are wonderful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm doctorjazz:

Hi, psyched for the show.
(man, that clarinet sounds GREAT!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm doctorjazz:

Missed the intro, but that's a clarinet doing the bass, sounds like to me (Bass clarinet...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm doctorjazz:

Of course, I didn't look at the picture, question answered.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm David D:

Geezerette, that is a very interesting point - and departure point for discussion. Anyone feel free to chime in...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm David D:

Doctorjazz: All different types of clarinet throughout the hour, in fact!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm Lewis:

so cool - here I am sitting watching the snow melt in Minneapolis listening to beautiful music from Leipzig. wish I could see the clarinets!
Avatar 4:34pm geezerette:

There's also a middle eastern aspect.
What I find most compelling about Klezmer is the mixture of tears and laughter, both extreme and intermingled. It pushes the clarinet's ability to evoke the human voice. Both sophisticated and unsubtle, I suppose the
painted equivalent would be Chagall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm David D:

Lewis, glad you can be here - and that the snow is melting!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm David D:

Geezerette - that does sum up traditional Klezmer. The Chagall comparison is a very interesting one, I'll be thinking about that.
Avatar 4:39pm Sem:

@geezerette: lovin' the analysis. The idea of an equivalence of Klezmer and Chagall makes me reach my big book of great painting. Thanks!
Avatar 4:54pm geezerette:

David and Sem, thanks very much!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Parq:

I'm really enjoying your comments, took, Geez. Such elegance and insight -- you leave nothing to be added.
Avatar 5:01pm geezerette:

One thing more, if you're an animation lover, The Fleischer Bros. Animation makes extensive use of Klezmer as well as blues & jazz, which are compatible with it for obvious reasons.
Avatar 5:01pm geezerette:

Parq, you flatterer. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm David D:

Hope everyone is dancing!
Avatar 5:07pm hilmar:

Schnee in Minneapolis im april....schön am empfangsgerät zu sitzen....
Avatar 5:08pm geezerette:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm David D:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm David D:

Slivovitz for everyone!

@geezerette @ 4:34: Most yiddish humor reflects likewise.

Avatar 5:24pm hilmar:

only beer left, slivovitz drunken already...
Avatar 5:24pm Sem:

That way madness lies, so....start pouring.
Avatar 5:25pm geezerette:

Doc,here's the bottle, just pass it around...cheers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm David D:

Avatar 5:32pm northguineahills:

I'm finally able to read German adequately. (Just don't ask me to write, or Cthuhlu forbid, speak it)
Avatar 5:38pm Listening Out There:

Just got here. Real life interferes with radio...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm kuba:

first i'm 12 hours early, now 1.5 late... one round soplica pigwowa on me!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm kuba:

i hope our german-english-polish-pidgin makes it somehow on-topic for continental subway...
Avatar 5:48pm northguineahills:

For the vexillogically curious: The flag of the Sami people: commons.wikimedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm kuba:

wow that's one stylish flag
Avatar 5:49pm Sem:

Thanks for that one, NGH.
Avatar 5:50pm northguineahills:

I only know a handful of phrases in Polish I learned in Greenpoint from my Polish-American friends. So, said pidgin confuses the hell out of me, but I love trying to decipher it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm David D:

Hilmar, like the Max Goldt reference!
Avatar 5:50pm hilmar:

hinter einem grossen schweigen kommt die sonne dann hervor
Avatar 5:50pm geezerette:

Snappy flag!
Avatar 5:51pm Sem:

My favourite: www.crwflags.com...
Avatar 5:53pm geezerette:

Sem,that's real isn't it?
Avatar 5:54pm northguineahills:

Yeah, it's a fave of mine. I almost want one, but since I have background of the Sami, or live w/in close proximity of their homeland, I feel it would be inappropriate.
Avatar 5:54pm Sem:

Yep, @geezerette, there was a brief period of about 2 years when the country was between overlords, and the flag is a relic of that true interregnum, so to say.
Avatar 5:54pm northguineahills:

@geezerette: Yep, that's real. (flag nerd)
Avatar 5:56pm Sem:

This is so fine.
Avatar 6:00pm geezerette:

Thought so because Australia has a kangaroo in it's great seal, I think,( Which could be uncomfortable for both animals.)
Avatar 6:01pm geezerette:

Yeah, this rocks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm Mark Hurst:

Was thinking the same thing.
Avatar 6:02pm Sem:

This is my stop. What a great show, David. See you and the rest of the Continental riders next time. Bye!
Avatar 6:02pm geezerette:

Avatar 6:03pm geezerette:

See you Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm David D:

Hey Mark!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm David D:

Thanks for listening, Sem - have a great evening!
Avatar 6:05pm hilmar:

sehr faszinierend, kati kovacs...i wonder where is she now?
Avatar 6:05pm TDK60:

That flag of the Sami is an interesting graphic, vexillologically speaking.
Avatar 6:06pm northguineahills:

@geezerette@6:00: hardy haha!
Avatar 6:07pm geezerette:

:D !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm David D:

Hilmar - good question, Hungary, I guess.
Avatar 6:09pm northguineahills:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Mark Hurst:

Hi David! Hi Geezerette! Great show, David.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm David D:

Thanks, Mark!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm doctorjazz:

My stop soon, thanks for the great show, David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm David D:

Thank you for being there, Doctorjazz!
Avatar 6:15pm northguineahills:

@David: You're stealing Kurt's thunder. (Pretty sure he's played marta kubisova ). He won't mind.
Avatar 6:16pm hilmar:

iits translationable
Avatar 6:19pm TDK60:

Vexillo Nerds coagulate sometimes.
Avatar 6:27pm northguineahills:

I've only heard Pete Seeger's versions of "This Train"

/wait, Alan Lomax did one as well....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm David D:

TDK60: I relate completely!
Avatar 6:30pm geezerette:

This show always makes me love humanity again, for which I'm grateful. Sometimes forget, these days.
Avatar 6:30pm TDK60:

Not into nationalism. (I do like the anarchist black flag.) But I like graphics. Just saw Greenland's recently, sleek and mod. Like the Iroquois Confederacy one too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm David D:

Thanks, Geezerette - reading that means so much!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Mark Hurst:

I second Geezerette's thought!
Avatar 6:31pm geezerette:

Avatar 6:32pm TDK60:

Yes, this last year or so has seen me...grumpy shall we say; as a resident of Earth.
Avatar 6:33pm northguineahills:

same here TDK60: I'm just geographically and historically curious, and that includes the semiotics. (I do support US football [no WC for us, sobs uncontrollably], but that's b/c of the accident of my birth).
Avatar 6:33pm geezerette:

Second round,lager & &lime.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm David D:

And thanks, Mark - I think this station (and not least your show!) keeps us all sane.
Avatar 6:35pm geezerette:

..OK, Guiness then...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm David D:

NGH: Yes, interestingly, the World (and European) Cup are the only occasions when you will see any significant number of flags flown here in Germany.
Avatar 6:37pm TDK60:

Anyone recall the Yippie flag? Black anarchist field with socialist red star with green cannabis leaf in front. Ha! // One might see why Germans are wary of flags.
Avatar 6:38pm geezerette:

These are some tasty moldy figs, must say.
Avatar 6:41pm geezerette:

Libertarians have no flag but they salute when they feel like it
Avatar 6:41pm TDK60:

Oh, the music yes, not heard much skiffle!
Avatar 6:43pm geezerette:

Gotta walk away from screen now.
Thanks for wonderful show David!
See you next time,all!
Avatar 6:45pm TDK60:

I do like the Nepal flag, interesting shape along with design. Another I like is the Cascadia "Douglas Fir" flag, also adopted by Portland Timbers soccer fans. // geezerette, awww...see ya next time.
Avatar 6:45pm northguineahills:

What David D said about Mark Hurst.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm David D:

Thanks Geezerette - have a great evening!
Avatar 6:48pm northguineahills:

Yeah, I love the Nepalese flag, as well as the Bhutanese and Tibetan (and the aforementioned Sami). Cascadia and New England both have nice ones as well. Ohio stands out in the US w/ just state seals w/ blue backgrounds, Oregon, the only state flag to have a different front and obverse
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Mark Hurst:

Shucks, everybody.
Avatar 6:49pm TDK60:

Yes, Mark's show Techtonics is a vital one, relatively new on the Woofmoo. Missed yesterday's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Mark Hurst:

Thanks, TDK60. Yesterday was a fun one (Zuck in Congress, phone breakup tips, and a caller about summer camp)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm David D:

Thank goodness for the archives (and podcasts)!
Avatar 6:54pm northguineahills:

Hobos hated Casey Jones, as he was rumored that he took out the floorboards out of the empty boxcars. Hence, "riding the rod", only have having the chassis to ride on. At least that how the folk tunes call it....
Avatar 6:55pm TDK60:

Some African nation-state flags are colorful. Recall Bob Marley's LP Survival with all of them on the cover. I like Kenya's.
Avatar 6:57pm TDK60:

Well, thanks David. This may be my first time posting here. Fun tunes.
Avatar 6:59pm northguineahills:

danke y dziekuje ci, David!
