This week: Henry Lowengard, aka Webhamster Henry, on tech at WFMU and beyond.

Pointers to Webhamster Henry's work:

• Henry's Droneo app for iOS

• Henry's Yes Session iOS app

• The AUMI iOS app (as Henry says, this is for disabled people, "temporarily abled" people, as well as birds, cats, goldfish, turtles, clouds, fire) - see also aumiapp.com - AUMI stands for Adaptive Use Musical Instruments, associated with the Deep Listening Institute, which says the "Adaptive Use Musical Instruments (AUMI) software interface enables people who have very limited controlled (voluntary) movement to independently engage in music making. The Adaptive Use Musical Instruments software interface enables the user to play sounds and musical phrases through movement and gestures." Here's a video demo of AUMI.

• Henry's Only A iOS app and the Only A repository Henry mentions in the interview. (And all of Henry's iOS apps.)

• Here's a video profile of Henry Lowengard by MX Creatives. "He uses sound to create digital apps which allow persons with diverse physical abilities to make music."

Henry's drones on Soundcloud (scroll down to see "Swoopster at Kingston, NY" - made by the Droneo app)

• Pauline Oliveros, composer - here's her NYT obit: Composer Who Championed ‘Deep Listening’

• A selection of Henry's mp3s

• Henry's homepage and his more general website.

• And about our outtro tonight, Not Programmed for Love - Henry used to be guest host on the "Nitecaps" show (1AM-3AM) and used this as his theme song.

Richard Stallman, president of the Free Software Foundation: "The surveillance imposed on us today far exceeds that of the Soviet Union. For freedom and democracy’s sake, we need to eliminate most of it."

Facebook sent a doctor on a secret mission to ask hospitals to share patient data: "Facebook was in talks with top hospitals and other medical groups as recently as last month about a proposal to share data about the social networks of their most vulnerable patients. The idea was to build profiles of people that included their medical conditions, information that health systems have, as well as social and economic factors gleaned from Facebook."

YouTube Is Improperly Collecting Children’s Data, Consumer Groups Say: remember that Google, too, not just Facebook, is conducting surveillance of you (and your kids).

Geoffrey Fowler: "It’s really amazing that Facebook continues to downplay this even during the apology tour." He's referring to Drew Harwell's comment: "When Zuckerberg says third-party companies were 'able to access some information' about users' friends (see WaPo piece), this is what he actually means: Location, romantic partner, work history, interests, photos, notes, videos (and much more!)"

I'm already hoping this becomes a multi-episode interview. Lots to discuss here.
Avatar 6:10pm βrian:

I remember sitting in the computer lab at Michigan, burrowing down Gopher pathways. The ambient audioscape of key clicks was hypnotizing.
  6:10pm Listener Robert:

Wow, I used to dial in to a couple of BBS that carried Echos.
Avatar 6:11pm Linda Lee:

really lovely hearing about *positive* tech!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm cosmic matrix:

super cool! loving the show. @linda, i agree!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Michael 98145:

like this playlist/ comments board. which i really do like.
Avatar 6:14pm βrian:

When the playlist shows the most recent track at the top and quits its infernal reloading, a new quantum level of consciousness will have been reached.
Avatar 6:14pm Linda Lee:

as a 30+ year listener i'll tell you: the playlist/comments add a beautiful dimension to the station. honestly.
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Ken From Hyde Park:

If the comments boards were to go away, I really don't know what I'd do. I'd feel so adrift.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm cosmic matrix:

the comments board makes this thing higher-dimensional.
Avatar 6:17pm TDK60:

The Archive is great. Many other radio stations have no archives, or do, but remove them after a time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Webhamster Henry:

I go to other stations and look for the non existent chat boards. I think chat boards are part of the Audience Engine, which is WFMU tech for other organizations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Michael 98145:

those archives are our money well-spent
  6:18pm Listener Robert:

I programmed a DOS script that chained to a WordPerfect script to download all my new content from the echos I was interested in, plus my Echomail, so I could read offline to save time dialed-in, which counted against my quota at the BBS, and also tied up my phone line -- with call waiting disabled so as not to knock off my connection. IIRC I even programmed in the DOS script a command to the modem dialer to send the code to turn off call waiting, then turn it on again at the end of the session.
Avatar 6:18pm Linda Lee:

other stations now seem dead-ish without chat, listener interaction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm Michael 98145:

there are people around who have forgotten DOS and dialers. or never knew them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm Webhamster Henry:

Avatar 6:20pm Linda Lee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Webhamster Henry:

Avatar 6:23pm Linda Lee:

like the idea of the encouragement app. i just text at people ~ then take screen shots of what i said :-D
  6:24pm JakeGould:

So Echo’s gopher server is still active?
Avatar 6:24pm Anthony:

There is nothing wrong with using information to influence public opinion as long as people are aware once they are signing up. "Misinformation" cannot be regulated under the first amendment. One's person's misinformation could be another person's 'truth'.
Avatar 6:25pm TDK60:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Webhamster Henry:

Technically - that's the desktop AUMI app, but the ios app sounds and works the same.
Avatar 6:26pm Linda Lee:

oh no! too much fun!
Avatar 6:27pm βrian:

Shouldn't that be qwertywriter.com??

Avatar 6:32pm βrian:

I deleted my account before I created it. Do I have cred, now, or what?
  6:32pm JakeGould:

iPhones are great. Social media is not all bad. And Facebook could be great if the focus was not so focused on harvesting data to profit a few.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm listener james from westwood:

I'm mildly surprised Woz even had a FB account. I figured he was still jamming 80s on his telecom solutions, possibly on a heavily modded Apple I.
Avatar 6:33pm TDK60:

Is the WFMU comments board "social media"?
Avatar 6:33pm geezerette:

Avatar 6:34pm βrian:

During the largest labor protests in the history of the United States, Twitter proved really useful to follow court proceedings.
Avatar 6:34pm Anthony:

Be careful...nobody complained when Facebook shared the personal information of every American on the platform in 2012 to certain political candidates for no charge. It only became a problem in 2016 when this was information was monetized and certain people did not like the results of this information sale.
Avatar 6:34pm geezerette:

TDK60, yep!
Avatar 6:35pm βrian:

@geezerette: Well, that makes two of us.
Avatar 6:35pm Linda Lee:

@JakeGould ~ well sure, but without its current function it wouldn't exist.
  6:35pm Patty D:

You ever notice how Zuckerberg keeps apologizing that people's data was shared but he never accepts responsibility?
Avatar 6:36pm Linda Lee:

he was absent that day.
Avatar 6:36pm geezerette:

Brian, talk about sales resistance.
Avatar 6:36pm Anthony:

Zuckerburg is the third worst person in technology.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Michael 98145:

Avatar 6:37pm Anthony:

How about live suicides?
Avatar 6:39pm βrian:

We need open-source tools, above all.
Avatar 6:39pm Anthony:

A 14 year old girl in Florida broadcast her suicide live on Facebook and there was no nationwide outcry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Michael 98145:

cripes, @Anthony. that is truly horrible.
Avatar 6:40pm Anthony:

Avatar 6:40pm Anthony:

why isn't this something we talk about? it's becoming more common
Avatar 6:40pm βrian:

Can you imagine a transaction fee, accruing to the individual, for every exchange of personal information??
Avatar 6:41pm Linda Lee:

we're generally inured to suffering that appears to us within certain contexts. period.
Avatar 6:42pm Linda Lee:

it's not actual. it's virtual. we're not required to respond as if it's actual & so we don't.
Avatar 6:42pm geezerette:

Love this hour of calm lucidity.
Avatar 6:42pm TDK60:

Surveillance has grown and grown. Cameras everywhere. Those new "link" things in NYC. Is there a new Orwell writing? Or Orwells?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm geo in jc:

The current market cap for Facebook as of April 06, 2018 is $456.67B.
  6:43pm JakeGould:

Mark, I think honestly saying these apps should be shut down is really paranoid. Shut down all existing social media apps. New ones will come up. The internet and computing is what it is. It can be used for bad or good.

I have no issues with social media to that level. I block what I want to block, expose what I want to expose and honestly I am not that torn up.

What I am more upset about is the modern media landscape where standalone websites and blogs have no viability. That is the reason social media is so central to the Internet nowadays; it all works only for the big players. 10 and even 20 years ago smaller players could have a humble existence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Michael 98145:

@LL, a 'two-dimensional" non-reality
Avatar 6:43pm Anthony:

A 12-year-old girl live-streamed her suicide. It took two weeks for Facebook to take the video down. why isnt this talked about? www.washingtonpost.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Webhamster Henry:

This is a job for ... BLOCKCHAINMAN!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm dale:

you just know he's got a boardroom full of people and whiteboards and 'ideation generation' flying all over the place prepping for his day in the hot seat.
Avatar 6:44pm Linda Lee:

a@TDK60 ~ all Orwell did was to understand how social control mechanisms generally take form & then he extrapolated.
@Michael 98145 ~ that's right.
  6:44pm JakeGould:

@geoinjc: Wonder how much they dodged in taxes? Just tax these folks through the nose. THAT would change the business model pretty quickly. Tax the rich. Period. That will solve lots of problems.
Avatar 6:45pm geezerette:

Webhamster Henry, hahaha!
Avatar 6:45pm Linda Lee:

why should we be more affected by a single young girl's suicide than we are by stories about hordes of suffering and dying people in foreign war zones? we're not touched by any of it, in actuality. none of it is actual.
Avatar 6:45pm TDK60:

Tax the rich?! My word such subversion. hee..
Avatar 6:45pm ardentvoice:

My household has been glued to the radio for this whole great broadcast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm melinda:

I agree with previous comments about the comments board. It is one of the reasons I started listening to more WFMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm melinda:

@Jake agree about the sad lack of viability for standalone websites and blogs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Michael 98145:

The drones have no beginning nor end, so I don't generally record them.
Avatar 6:48pm Linda Lee:

lovely sound, for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm northguineahills:

Missed Henry's interview :(. Got 5"s/13cm of rain in the last 2.5 hours and the creek overflowed the main road. Had to plow through 2'/61cm of water taking a detour. 1/3 of the stop lights were out. But I made it back to work and Techtonic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm northguineahills:

Moar drone!
Avatar 6:48pm Linda Lee:

thank you for giving us sounds that are actually nice to listen to!
Avatar 6:49pm TDK60:

I didn't "need" the comments board, was already a woofmoo eccentric. But it does *extend* the radio experience. A technics I can use and support.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Michael 98145:

  6:53pm Mike in Wayne:

Facebook is as much a financialization problem as it is a tech problem. Don’t expect too much action from Congress because to attack Facebook is to attack Wall Street. That ain’t happening. Everyone on the committee questioning Zuckerberg will likely have a healthy number of FB in their portfolio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm ultradamno:

I think this much positive feedback would make me defensive.

Avatar 7:09pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I grew up using chat systems in the 70's and 80's so I was eager to bring some here. I credit Mike Lupica for the nudge, who said one day, we should allow comments below the playlist after it's over. I said, we should allow live chat while it's happening! And then I got to work... I also credit Tumblr for making me realize scroll control in the browser was viable.
Avatar 7:10pm Linda Lee:

enabled comments has been absolutely great for creating this community ~ ultimately strengthening station support! bravo!
Avatar 7:14pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I created live playlist commenting in 2006, and implemented the Ajax live scrolling in early 2010. My notes say that took two sleepless weeks from conception to debugged implementation.
Avatar 7:17pm Linda Lee:

best sleepless nights you ever spent, right?. ;-)

Oh but of course
Avatar 7:18pm Linda Lee:

Avatar 7:19pm Linda Lee:

Avatar 7:19pm Linda Lee:

Avatar 7:20pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Avatar 7:22pm Linda Lee:
