Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Good morning JA - this Neil Rolnick piece is one of my favorite things.

Linda, you talkin' about some other WFMU show? Kidding. Great that it has lots of love and friendship. Note that some can't handle if it gets too real, like today on housing costs. Oh well, reality does seep in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am melinda:

Hi JA and all
Avatar 9:25am ben abs:

Morning all (afternoon here)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am melinda:

I find the discussions about housing costs in one neighborhood/region vs another interesting, but if people feel depressed by it (who can blame them) they should feel free to express that as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am steveo:

sleeping is good; there's also a track on this album called "Country Jive" that has a flute in it, so that's intriguing.
Avatar 9:27am Wild Neil||Peace All:

This Eero K. sounds like a Dirty Harry soundtrack kinda cool!
@Melinda-I did not mean to bum anybody out! NYC has a TON of cultural offerings, but they come at a price.
Avatar 9:28am TDK60:

Melinda: of course.
Avatar 9:28am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Is this real record popping or is it in the recording?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am northguineahills:

@Wild Neil: Yeah, there is a price. One emergency and you go broke. I'm in my early 40s and am just starting to have savings again.
Avatar 9:29am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am melinda:

@Neil don't worry, I was referring to TDK's comment about people not being able to handle the discussion of housing cost but I didn't think anyone breached any boundaries of acceptable conversation.
Avatar 9:44am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Melinda-thanks! I am a bit sensitive about stepping on people's toes! Don't wish to offend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am northguineahills:

I lived in Japan, but I was a pre-teen/teen at the time (wish I was into music at the time)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am BronwynB:

i get the housing cost complaints (i live in a single room in a basement in crown heights that's full of mold that's giving me chronic bronchitis) but the constant repetition of it in most conversations between new yorkers gets wearying (i primarily mean in person conversations rather than you guys) but what really irritates me is the constant reminder that "the rising rents ruined new york! you missed it, kid!"
Avatar 9:49am themutante:

Don Cherry - Brown Rice is the ish!

@Bronwyn I can see how that would really get old, especially with the generational angle.
Avatar 9:56am themutante:

Baraka, I've got that mother on Blu-ray. It's a trip, yo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am BronwynB:

@melinda: yes. it's very tiresome. i've wanted to live in nyc since i was 5 and for the last 16 months i've lived here i've gotten the constant drumbeat of "nyc has lost its soul! you'll never experience the REAL new york!" and often these are bourgeois types who miss the "gritty" experience. like, you want grit? listen to me hacking up a lung bc my apartment's full of mold! or hell, come down to philly (where i'm from) with me and i'll give you a tour of the grittiness you so desperately miss
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Ike:

I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I couldn't see where you were going or what you were going for. This early 70s thing didn't get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Delaney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long-winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someone's being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it dub, to what, be cool? Then you really break our hearts when we learn you totally made up this letter yourself and that it didn't come from an aggrieved dumb troll of a listener at all. You damn dirty hipster. Oh, the humanity! Where's your handlebar mustache? I like Bryce a lot. Bryce wouldn't do that to us.
Avatar 9:58am themutante:

I take it the comments board doesn't have a limit on characters?
Avatar 9:59am John Allen:

Ike, i didnt write the description. But Bryce has been doing this to everyone all along.
Avatar 9:59am themutante:

Who am I kidding, you're all characters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am melinda:

I look at real estate and airbnbs online, for fun, and it's interesting to see the differences in pricing and decor from one city to another. For some reason rustic barn-style sliding doors are a popular thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Ike:

During the marathon, you said you wrote it. What do you mean now that you "didn't write the description"? WTF? LOL.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am northguineahills:

@BronwynB: No one wants gritty NYC. When I first moved to Brooklyn in 2000, I got mugged/jumped so many times it became a running joke. I prefer happy medium NYC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am BronwynB:

@melinda: im pretty sure for what i pay for my crown heights basement i could live in like a penthouse on delancey street in philly.

oh shit, now im the one complaining about housing costs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am BronwynB:

@ngh: they say they do, though! or maybe they just want to ~experience~ it. but they don't want to live it...
Avatar 10:06am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@BronwynB-you can find out fast with Zillow. You could not pay me enough to live in Philly, NYC or the like. I like the country even though my neighbors are kinda primitive in their thinking and actions. Even college educated people!

@Bronwyn & ngh: that's what's sad, the happy medium is so short-lived.

@Bronwyn-yeah, I checked, you can get a studio apt for $725 in Philly.

This is a jam. I am strapping my boombox onto my head right now. DONT LOOK AT ME JUST GROOVE
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am BronwynB:

@wild neil: goddammit, that's actually less than what i pay for my crown heights basement room. i thought i was kidding, but apparently i wasn't!

it's worth it, though. i love philly, but i love nyc more. so these are the sacrifices we end up making i guess.
Avatar 10:13am themutante:

If anyone didn't hear Trouble's show yesterday, then should check it out. My finger is still hurting clicking, hunting down those tracks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am George of Troy:

Avatar 10:14am themutante:

It's not often that I'm thinking of a set the day after.

Green Gartside of Scritti Politti wrote the smartest take-down of Arcade Fire I ever read. Think it was in the Guardian many years ago.
Avatar 10:17am themutante:

Avatar 10:18am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Bronwyn-if you are paying less than $1500 you are getting a deal!
Avatar 10:18am themutante:

This Scritti is damn fine!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am maestroso in Tokyo:

Good grief, Scritti Politti in 1982, how did I not hear this?
  10:19am Leelee:

@themutante, amen to your Trouble comment. Listened again early this a.m. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am George of Troy:

"...an agglomeration of mannerisms, cliches and devices."
  10:20am Mark Williams:

it's short enough to cut & paste:

People who enjoy this album may think I'm cloth-eared and unperceptive, and I accept it's the result of my personal shortcomings, but what I hear in Arcade Fire is an agglomeration of mannerisms, cliches and devices. I find it solidly unattractive, texturally nasty, a bit harmonically and melodically dull, bombastic and melodramatic, and the rhythms are pedestrian. It's monotonous in its textures and in the old-fashioned, nasty, clunky 80s rhythms and eighth-note basslines. It isn't, as people are suggesting, richly rewarding and inventive. The melodies stick too closely to the chord changes. Win Butler's voice uses certain stylistic devices - it goes wobbly and shouty, then whispery - and I guess people like wobbly and shouty going to whispery, they think it signifies real feeling. It's some people's idea of unmediated emotion. I can imagine Jeremy Clarkson liking it; it's for people in cars. It's rather flat and unlovely. The album and the response to it represent a bunch of beliefs about expression and truth that I don't share. The battle against unreconstructed rock music continues.
Avatar 10:20am Chris from DC:

Oh I missed Tor Lundvall. That album is really good.
Avatar 10:20am themutante:

Good minds and that, @Leelee
Avatar 10:21am themutante:

IMA owes a lot to Devo? Or vice versa? What year was this? I missed it! I'm guessing 1980 or so.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am ɨkɛ:

That's appealingly vicious, but I still like Arcade Fire's first few albums. There's nothing "texturally nasty" about them. They are bombastic and melodramatic, though. That's what I like about them.
Avatar 10:32am themutante:

It took me a little aback, little talk and a marathon of well selected tracks. @PRB

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Mick:

Jumping in late as usual - agree with Bronwyn's take on the boring-ness of NY good ol' bad ol' days-ism. Anyone catch Penny Arcade's "Longing Lasts Longer" when she did that in Bkln a couple years ago? Bristling takedown of the futility of that kind of nostalgia.
Avatar 10:59am themutante:

This Emerson Kitamura chick/dude is delightful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am bore:

Avatar 11:01am themutante:

That Rock Your Baby track is easily my favourite right now.
Avatar 11:04am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Bronwyn-enjoy NY, its YOUR STORY now. Be in it! Crime is much lower in NYC now I hear......
  11:04am JakeGould:

Haha! I love the specific “gritty old NYC” arguments… Especially now that I live in Bay Ridge and most people have no idea what that place is. Anyone ever come home at 2:00am and find glass and blood on their block? Or see homeless people live in ATM vestibules? Or have to confront people who sneak into the building to try and push in unlocked apartment doors?

Gritty old NYC still exists! The rent is cheaper! It still sucks!

Bonus Points: When I tell some people I like riding the bus to my neighborhood because it’s more reliable than the subway at times and they are baffled at the idea of someone riding the bus.

Stay in your little Brownstone bubble and get excited when you find a new kind of craft beer at the corner store you call a “bodega” despite the fact it is not an bodega.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am BronwynB:

@mick: i just googled that and while it seems from the reviews that she actually might be engaging in that kind of nostalgia or at least hatred of current nyc, i agree with her that there are too many cupcake shops and just too much food here in general. as someone who doesn't especially like food, im irritated that my generation is so obsessed with it (no wonder 70% of americans are overweight!) and they'd all rather have brunch or cutesy cupcakes than actually DO anything. whatever happened to young and hungry???
  11:05am JakeGould:

Anyway, HELLO!!!!
  11:07am JakeGould:

FWIW, Penny Arcade is schtick nowadays. She’s a broken record and tiresome. Fun for the first time you see her read… Then? Meh.
Avatar 11:07am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Jake Gould-I remember homeless sleeping in ATM vestibules. Bay Ridge looks cool on a map, it has its own grid!
Avatar 11:07am themutante:

Sweet, Rob Rental is from the town next to mine.
  11:08am JakeGould:

@WildNeil: Everything looks “cool” on a map.
Avatar 11:08am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Bronwyn-yeah, the whole food thing is out of control. Fat people have taken over the world! In Poland far fewer people are so overweight.
@Jake Gould-is Bay Ridge kinda gritty?
Avatar 11:09am themutante:

Powerful, Robert Rental!
  11:09am JakeGould:

Anything outside of the “Brownstone Brooklyn” world is gritty.
  11:10am JakeGould:

But parts of the neighborhood are nice. But by fantasy version of Brooklyn standards? It’s gritty.
Avatar 11:10am themutante:

Total discourse marker, right there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am BronwynB:

@neil: it's really alarming!!!! it's a public health crisis that no one seems to be taking seriously right now
Avatar 11:10am themutante:

*see yesterday.
Avatar 11:12am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@BronwynB-fat shaming is illegal. People SHOULD be ashamed of their lack of activity and gross over eating. I think Michele Obama tried to do something about it. Tilting at windmills!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am BronwynB:

i've recently tried to spark creativity by eating less, because i think eating as much as the modern american does makes one fat and sluggish. it's worked. i have much more energy and am a lean mean fighting/writing machine
Avatar 11:13am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Jake G-Williamsburg is an ever-expanding bubble it sounds like. In 1993 it started. I was there visiting to do a rave called Organism.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am BronwynB:

Avatar 11:14am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Bronwyn-when I lived in NYC I would ride my bike 30 miles or so to occupy my time and get out of the apt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am BronwynB:

i will admit to enjoying a nice 99 cent arizona tea here and there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am BronwynB:

@neil: that's kinda how i am with walking. my boyfriend and i like to walk like crazy on the weekends. like, walking from the village to the upper west side kind of thing.
  11:15am JakeGould:

@BronwynB: I kid! I kid! I quit soda, coffee and deli breakfasts of egg and sausage on a roll this week… Already lost a few pounds.

Also, I mean the 99 cent LITER bottles of soda from the 99 cent store.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am melinda:

@Bronwyn I hear you about the foodie craze, I used to be on board and then I came down with health problems that limited what I could eat, and then it all seem gluttonous and annoying. My sense though is that the trendiest artisanal/local food consumers aren't generally the ones with obesity problems.
Avatar 11:17am Honeybear:

I like it out of tune actually
Avatar 11:17am themutante:

I'm pissing myself laughing.
Avatar 11:17am John Allen:

hey no body shaming here. i had to shut Clay Pigeon down for it earlier today, and I'll do it here if i have to. we stick with the neck up around here.
  11:18am JakeGould:

Also, I am tired of excessive beer choices. Bullshit anyone can tell the difference.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Ken From Hyde Park:

I've heard this track on Nick Name's show before. This is pretty much it. For as long as you can stand it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am melinda:

Enjoying the tunes and sounds.
Avatar 11:18am themutante:

It's not quite out of tune enough, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am BronwynB:

@melinda: that's a good point about the trendy ones not being the biggest, but so many of my generation are quite large and unhealthy, and thin foodies also annoy me, because- as i read in an article recently- it's weird that young people (and everyone) these days are so into sitting around eating (and netflixing) because "food encourages a state of satiety and repose"). that really stuck with me. fuck satiety and repose! go out there and do stuff and be creative and have some damn energy, especially while you're young.
Avatar 11:19am themutante:

That last track was hilarious! To me anyway.
  11:20am JakeGould:

@themutante: How about doing that all day in the subway. Just set up a chair, put a can in front of you and just tune all day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am BronwynB:

@JA: apologies if i come across as body shaming- i totally don't mean it and have nothing against people with a larger body size, i just worry about the health implications of more and more overweight people.
Avatar 11:20am themutante:

Damn, @JakeGould! That idea is a goldmine!!
Avatar 11:21am themutante:

I'm still laughing!
Avatar 11:21am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Bronwyn-when I was broke and had a broken collarbone (and could not ride) I would walk from 3 Clinton Street to the Cathedral of St. John the Divine on 110th street both ways every day! i think I earned $1,000 a month or so at that point!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Polyus:

Peoples' weight and eating habits are often the result of far more complicated factors than "you eat too much", as if that needs restating.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am BronwynB:

@polyus: very true, it's so often economic as well which is a huge problem in poorer communities. i actually gained weight at a time in my life when i was very very poor, because i lived in north philly and had no money and it was very difficult to afford or even find anything remotely healthy.
Avatar 11:24am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Bronwyn-No, I was LAMENTING the days when you could make fun of fat people. Guess I am a monster. It served a function, though. You did nothing wrong.
Avatar 11:24am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Polyus-oh. I did not realize that. It did need re-stating. In Poland these problems are far less prevalent, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am melinda:

I think relaxing and taking time with one's food is a good and healthy thing, the Instagraming of meals is another matter (and might be creating the illusion that young people are spending all their time sitting around eating). Agree about the Netflixing, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am melinda:

(Not that no one should take pictures of their food)

I will say this about my current dietary change: It’s weird to be at work, do work and not feel stressed… I think I basically have been just wired too much thanks to the caffeine.

But I did binge on a roll of Lifesavers yesterday. So I am flawed.

I am a skinny guy that is actually fat. In the 90's I was a 32 waist, now I am a 36 in denial that I am really a 38!

In extremely poor areas of cities, they do not have supermarkets, only convenience stores for food. This is a shame. It leads to an extremely poor diet.

Why doesn’t someone do something about all the problems, Neil.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Ken From Hyde Park:

@WN - Yes, the food desert. Convenience stores stocked with junk food.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am BronwynB:

when i lived in north philly, i bought a bag of lettuce at the piss poor excuse for a grocery store. i opened it up at home and it turned out to be rotten. it smelled terrible. to get healthy food, i would have had to go to the reading terminal or something, and i didn't have time or money to go there. so the obesity problem in many ways has its roots in socioeconomics BUT it's also cultural, too. it's a many-headed hydra.

When I was buying every John Cale record I could get my hands on, Artificial Intelligence was the one that made me go, "er, no, this one goes back on the sell pile". That track actually sounded pretty good in the context of this show though. Leave it to JA to find the one good bit.

you know, as opposed to the one headed hydra

Yes, the free market, or invisible hand or whatever, has done a very poor job in food deserts. It's long past time for a different approach.

Thanks for the amazing show, JA!

You really cracked me up with the fella tuning his guitar.

I think the current administration's plan is this: Let them eat cake!
