Elisha Cook, Jr., auditions for Emmett Kelly biopic.
Avatar 3:01pm Itzall Ablurr:

Don Knotts experiments with peyote.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm BronwynB:

hello irwin and everyone :)
Avatar 3:02pm βrian:

Ooh, it's nice to plunge into this field of orange.
  3:03pm Dean:

The painting is signed by Pablo's brother Gary.
Avatar 3:03pm Itzall Ablurr:

Brian, that thought just occurred to me. Always looks like this song sounds!
Avatar 3:04pm βrian:

Not Geraldo?
Avatar 3:04pm Wild Neil:

Billy Bob Thornton said he really admired Don Knotts commitment to the characters he played. PEACE all.
Avatar 3:06pm Hoboken Jack:

Irwin! Bronwyn! Frenchie, wherever you are. Hello to all!
Avatar 3:06pm Wild Neil:

This riff sounds a lot like "I'm a man, yes I am and I can't help but love you so..." song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm BronwynB:

hey jack :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm thatpatsmith:

Irwin! Hey there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hey, cool! "Is this new Jethro Tull?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Carmichael:

The marathon has started? I've been off-air (off-life, really) the past week.
Avatar 3:10pm Wild Neil:

I really like music math and approximate music guessing like that Ken.
Avatar 3:10pm Itzall Ablurr:

Speaking of the marathon... what do you need to do if you already support monthly? Anything? Nothing? Plotz?
  3:12pm Laura L:

No wonder Elisha Cook Jr. looks sad--somebody shot a paint gun at him, sheesh!
  3:12pm Dean:

Dominant paradigm? Infinite regression? False equivalency!
  3:13pm Dean:

Mentioned earlier on a comment board today, but worth repeating: story today in NYT about Julius Eastman.
Avatar 3:15pm βrian:

@Itzall: I think it's automatically renewed and a message is sent to confirm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm Kat in Chicago:

@Itzall I heard on earlier shows today that the email is supposed to go out today to Swag4Lifers. Haven't seen mine yet,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Kat in Chicago:

The renewal is automatic for sure, if you need to adjust anything Joe McGasko takes care of that.
Avatar 3:20pm Itzall Ablurr:

Joe. Of course. It's always Joe who helps.
Avatar 3:20pm βrian:

Thanks, Dean
Avatar 3:21pm Lixiviated Life:

Aren't all records somewhat wonderful?
Avatar 3:22pm βrian:

Cafe owners should offer matching funds for tip jars.
Avatar 3:22pm Lixiviated Life:

stop feeling
  3:24pm Dean:

Until last year where I buy coffee a cup cost $1.70. I routinely handed over two bucks, put the quarter in the tip jar and the nickel in my pocket. Come the New Year the price went up to two bucks. Now I have to dig a quarter out of my change pocket or, worse, leave nothing because I have no change.
  3:24pm Dean:

Er, until late last year...
Avatar 3:24pm βrian:

Don't forswear; swear!
  3:24pm fletchernyc:

And overdose on adverbs
Avatar 3:30pm Wild Neil:

Non-contradictory oxymoron is a meta joke. And so is this!
  3:33pm Dean:

I never μετα...
Avatar 3:34pm Chud:

I love it when my twin loves of WFMU and Matt Berry line up
Avatar 3:37pm AnAnonymousParty:

Shouldn't one quack when one ducks and covers?
  3:37pm yippie:

did Rihanna change her name to RIAA
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm ɨkɛ:

Good advice from Mr. Fab! We might need to duck and cover pretty soon when the orange maniac starts a nuclear war, so let's get ready!
  3:38pm Dean:

Avatar 3:38pm βrian:

Extra whipped cream on my Pleasant Valley Sunday, please.
Avatar 3:40pm Itzall Ablurr:

Dear AnAnonymousParty- yes, you should always Quack your A## Goodbye in that event.
Avatar 3:40pm βrian:

"Send my mouth way down south ..."
  3:40pm yippie:

cause im the cunnilingus champion from company c
Avatar 3:46pm Wild Neil:

That's kinda dirty, yippie. I think we can swear in here, but THAT is really kinda I don't know how to put it.....
  3:46pm yippie:

yeah i think that song is illegal
Avatar 3:47pm Itzall Ablurr:

"Bad form" I believe would be the operative term.
  3:48pm yippie:

like an exception to making parodies if you make your parody too dirty its illegal thats why weird al cant make songs about sex
Avatar 3:48pm Joel St. Germain:

Lot of great tunes today, Irwin
Avatar 3:50pm Irwin:

Thank you, Other Joel. (My older bro's name is Joel. He's Joel #1.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Kat in Chicago:

Aren't marvelous and tasteless adjectives?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm The Oscar:

Afternoon all! Snuff Box permanently changed the way I say "Fuck you."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm rsj:

a shower? maybe a golden dog shower
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm mrdonutsu:

Speaking of the end of the world: It's a snow day in Portland, OR.
  3:57pm stalvey:

end of the world stuff a bummer-but i just saved big on car insurance so...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm ɨkɛ:

Zzzzzzzzz. Is this interminable inevitable conservative advocacy for smokestacks and a return to 70s smog actually going somewhere? Get some new material. Now, the apocalypse of all adverbs, THAT'S an interesting premise. You should have developed that a bit more instead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Tommy in Neversink:

Thanks for that inspiring message Irwin
Avatar 3:58pm Irwin:

So easy to trigger Ike.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm ⓘⓚⓔ:

It is! But that's also an old shtick for you, and I'm a terribly easy target. It's like shooting monkeys in a fishery, isn't it? Are you already done growing and changing, Irwin?
  4:00pm Dean:

Notice how he didn't say "interminably inevitable" or "inevitably interminable"?
  4:01pm Dean:

And without adverbs we wouldn't have as many Lee Konitz tunes.
  4:03pm jess:

Will we ever hear Joe Frank again?
Avatar 4:08pm Irwin:

Jess: Not soon. Complicated issue.
  4:11pm jess:

I miss him
Avatar 4:20pm βrian:

The album named itself?
Avatar 4:27pm Irwin:

Self-titled albums are narcissistic by self-definition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm Carmichael:

So Tyler Perry is quite narcissistic.
  4:33pm Laura L:

Thirlwell! Thanks, Irwin!
Avatar 4:33pm βrian:

I wrote a one-page essay titled "This Page Intentionally Left Blank"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm joe mulligan:

JG Thirlwell is so unmistakably unique
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm The Oscar:

Nice to hear a less frequently quoted line from Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.
Avatar 4:36pm JFR:

one man gang bang?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm BronwynB:

i can no longer listen to this without thinking that poor oscar & adam's pleas were not answered, and they were sent to space, as poe dameron and kylo ren respectively. looking forward to seeing JT as jar jar binks' nephew in episode IX.
Avatar 4:39pm Roberto:

Is it acceptable to pre-favorite a track?
Avatar 4:39pm Roberto:

We're about to find out.
  4:39pm berbo:

This is the best thing ever invented.
Avatar 4:41pm Soul Captain:

Two songs that should never be played on MU at the same time.
Avatar 4:42pm Itzall Ablurr:

3, technically.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm mrdonutsu:

Paul sounds like Mark Arm!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm The Oscar:

Every time I hear "Wonderful Christmastime" I remind myself that the man who wrote it also wrote a hard rock song brutal enough to inspire one of the most notorious crimes of the 20th century.
Avatar 4:44pm Lixiviated Life:

how about maybe someday WFMU plays every song in the library at the same time. whats the worst that could happen?
  4:44pm andrewb:

led zeppelin was a real good band
Avatar 4:44pm Roberto:

YESS the fade-back-in too!
Avatar 4:46pm Hoboken Jack:

  4:48pm jess:

that mashup is fucking awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm BronwynB:

inside llewyn davis was derided? i liked it but would have liked it better if it had more to do with 60s folk and less to do with llewyn davis. but i guess that would have been a different movie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Michael 98145:

[ love, love those archives ... ]
Avatar 4:52pm βrian:

Instead of "marathon," maybe the WFMU season?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm Michael 98145:

please, -not- FMU-a-palooza
Avatar 4:54pm Irwin:

By "unfairly derided," BB, I mean Ken didn't like it.
Avatar 4:55pm βrian:

WFMU Fortnight?
Nah, that'll probably be dated before long.
  4:55pm judy from croton:

Oh it’s a very Jack Bruce kind of day. Without the hard liquor.
Avatar 4:55pm Roberto:

Jack! The cream of Cream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Michael 98145:

good to hear him again ...
Avatar 4:55pm Irwin:

Did some wonderful stuff outside the power trio.
  4:57pm judy from croton:

Dare I say it? The musical backbone of that trio.
Avatar 4:58pm βrian:

The WFMU Retreat? No, that seems to imply silence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm BronwynB:

@irwin: hahaha

"The WFMU Literally Campaign"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm Doobois:

They Might Be Giants use a Mellotron sample of Jack Bruce's voice on their new album "I Like Fun," on the title track.
Avatar 5:03pm TDK60:

Bruce was a great bassist and singer.
Avatar 5:03pm Hoboken Jack:

Llewyn Davis tied in my personal rankings for best film of 2013 with The Spectacular Now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm James in ATL:

What a terrific show today. Thanks so much Irwin.
Avatar 5:03pm Sean B.:

Thanks for the perfect soundtrack to a sporadically uneven but great day. Hey I woke up today, And pillow faced; surrounded by music; Beats nonesuch.
Avatar 5:04pm βrian:

The WFMU Crusade. That's it.
Avatar 5:04pm Irwin:

Thanks to Hoboken Jacques for intro'ing me to the dollar-store sounds of Ms. Green.
  5:07pm Dean:

Just *knew* this was ECM.

"Give money to WFMU and get drunk by Noon".
Avatar 5:27pm TDK60:

It's gotta be Blood Sweat & Tears.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm common:

blood sweat and tears! hello!
  5:30pm jan:

50 yrs! Melancholy washes over me. I heard this, just as you did. But the music sounds great!
  5:30pm kev:

I went to the philmore easy to see Al,and to my surprise there was a fat Canadian taking his place. Jethro Tull on before
Avatar 5:31pm glenn:

i have al's book [backstage passes and backstabbing bastards]. it's pretty good.
Avatar 5:31pm Irwin:

Pretty good? It's a monumental bio. So well-written, and hilarious.
Avatar 5:32pm glenn:

i understate things.
Avatar 5:33pm glenn:

it's definitely better than any neil young book.
  5:33pm judy from croton:

A fat canadian!! Haha; enjoyed that.
  5:33pm jan:

And the bands Al played in before, Blues Project, and after, Electric Flag, and then Super Session are worth revisiting...
Avatar 5:34pm TDK60:

Oh, forgot the comma after Blood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Passaic River Blues:

I thought Kooper did some of the work on the second BST record. I always liked the Satie stuff, but you are right that, post-Kooper, BST quickly became boring.
  5:34pm Listener Robert:

REmember how Bob & Ray had John Simon the theater critic as the worst person in the world? I wonder what review he gave them to cause that reaction.
Avatar 5:37pm TDK60:

I did see Blues Project once.
  5:37pm kev:

it was disappointed but Tull was great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm BronwynB:

john simon sure is controversial, but when i contacted hundreds of theater critics to review a tiny production i was involved with, his 91-year-old self was one of the only people to actually give me the dignity of a reply. he declined, saying something along the lines of "if i give you a review they'll all want one," but he was very cordial.
Avatar 5:40pm Irwin:

Different John Simon, just to clarify.
Avatar 5:41pm glenn:

david c.t. was really a fat englishman, since he was born in blighty.
Avatar 5:41pm Irwin:

This John Simon also produced the first Leonard Cohen album, another monumental project.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm BronwynB:

i know, i just like talking about my email encounter with the other john simon whenever i can shoehorn it in.
Avatar 5:41pm TDK60:

This Simon also involved with The Band.
Avatar 5:42pm Irwin:

Yep. Same guy. Still around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm BronwynB:

my boyfriend's name is one letter away from being john simon.
Avatar 5:42pm Hoboken Jack:

If more Blood Sweat & Tears songs sounded like this, I'd probably listen to them a whole lot more.
  5:43pm Dean:

Simon on Bob & Ray: http://bit.ly/2BGJYFO
  5:43pm Listener Robert:

John Simon's got to be one of the commonest English language names. Probably more than mine, Robert Goodman, but maybe less common than my friend, Nancy Wilson.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Passaic River Blues:

I'm pretty sure my dad subscribed to New York Magazine just to read Simon reviews to plays he'd never see and either exclaim in agreement or rage in fulsome dissent.
  5:45pm Listener Robert:

I chortled out loud just at the headline, Dean.
Avatar 5:45pm TDK60:

Wonderful tune. // I celebrated many 1967 albums last year, like "Surrealistic Pillow" by Jefferson Airplane. I still celebrate them. 1968 was also a year full of fine music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm BronwynB:

my name's not that common, but the weird thing about it is that the most famous person with my first name also has my last name.
  5:45pm debt collector:

Blood sweat and TEARS
Avatar 5:46pm Fredericks:

The produced version of "Modern Adventures..."brought to mind Love's Forever Changes.
  5:46pm Dean:

There are six Irwin Chusids on my block alone. I work with four others.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Dave in Vermont:

hey, dc- don't think I've ever seen you on here after dawn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm BronwynB:

@dean: i suspect hyperbole
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm common:

totally Fredericks. and this more of zombies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Dave in Vermont:

wait, is it before dawn, now?
  5:47pm Mister Eddie:

Beautiful song. But I agree with the other band members about being included on the album. It was all Al, and he should of just kept it for himself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Michael 98145:

... "ostrich-like escapism" ... :)
  5:48pm Dean:

@BronwynB: I *never, ever* resort to hyperbole.
Avatar 5:48pm TDK60:

Maybe Al could have let them add horn charts?
Avatar 5:49pm glenn:

never ever implies some wiggle room.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm BronwynB:

@dean: but do you ever resort to ADVERBS
  5:50pm Dean:

Frequently, obsessively, routinely.

Hair s/t was '68.
  5:50pm kev:

you did good Irwin
  5:51pm yippie:

maybe a bugle chart
  5:51pm Dean:

My favorite adverb: contumely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Michael 98145:

OUch: "The Two and Only [Bob & Ray] are not even radio any more, merely static."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm Mike East:

diggin' the show today, Irwin. That cut from the Llewyn Davis movie particularly made me smile.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Michael 98145:

Thank you again, Irwin. Nowhere else is there radio like this.
  5:57pm Dean:

Coulda just played "Conrad. It's Me, Erik," and the rest again. Not like we would have remembered them.
Avatar 6:03pm Fredericks:
