Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

Chico is the Man.
  10:18pm Dean:

Not sure death--loss--is ever happy. But if you can die fulfilled, that'll do it.
  10:20pm Dean:

geezerette: Did you ever dine at Chianti on Melrose? It was all about banquettes and light so low the waiter arrived with a pen light to assist with the menu.
Avatar 10:21pm Little Danny:

Hi Dean!

@geez: Totally agree. Chico is one of my fave drummers. And fave jazz leaders, period
  10:23pm MrFab:

Frankie's Tiki Room in Vegas is like that Dean. i walked thru the door into utter blackness, lit only by little black-light artworks. The bartender saw me and said "your eyes will adjust."
Avatar 10:23pm geezerette:

camels belly dancing! know that sound anywhere.

Danny, so many beyond brilliant jazz greats, THAT is Uhmerica to me. -
Avatar 10:24pm still b/p:

Hey, speaking of musical shufflings off of the mortal coil, I was veryyy surprised to learn recently that one of the highest-ranking pop tunes on the Dreadful Charts was a remake: Seasons In The Sun. It's from something Jacques Brel adapted! I heard an old version a few weeks ago and was thrown for a (nonfatal) loop.
Avatar 10:24pm geezerette:

Dean, yeah! That was a glamorous place. :)
Avatar 10:25pm geezerette:

...and the aquarium at MUSE.
  10:25pm Dean:

Yep, it was. Went there only once, but dined next door (in the kitchen) at Cucina many times. It was Celestino Drago's baby. I believe he has a decent restaurant downtown these days.
Avatar 10:27pm geezerette:

Heard that too but don't know name or location.
Avatar 10:28pm coelacanth∅:

sb/p "le moribund" (or something like that) beirut did a cover of it.
  10:28pm Dean:

...and Evan Kleiman's Angeli Caffe across the street, too.

Cucina was, literally, the Chianti kitchen. Don't know MUSE.
  10:29pm Dean:

You mean the downtown place...yeah, I don't know it from experience. A friend went and enjoyed it not too many years ago.
Avatar 10:30pm Little Danny:

@geez: Yet so many of them barely remembered! Also very 'Murca
Avatar 10:32pm Kris Holmes:

Tuned in
Avatar 10:32pm coelacanth∅:

b/p did you hear the original? i 'd like to hear that but i couldn't find it anywhere last i looked.
Avatar 10:34pm geezerette:

Evan Kleiman is a local treasure.
Muse is long gon but there was a gigantic illuminated aquarium at the bar filled with tropical fish. It was mesmerizing, especially after a drink. Living painting...Muse was on Melrose in Hollywood.
  10:37pm Dean:

Drago Centro, just west of LAPL.

Dined long ago at Michel Richard's Citron on Melrose, too. Later, at his Santa Barbara Citronelle. Just a few years ago--he died in late 2016--I was in DC, where I had lunch at Central Michel Richard in D.C. I sat at the bar. At a table adjacent to the bar, a large man wearing a toque consuming a huge bowl of what looked like a rich pasta Bolognese. It was MR, so I introduced myself and praised the meals I'd had at his restaurants. He seemed to appreciate the reference to his first flagship, Citron.
  10:39pm Dean:

Not Citron...Citrus!
Avatar 10:39pm still b/p:

The one I heard was Kingston Trio I believe, but here's Jacques with his version of song and lyrics:
Avatar 10:42pm Little Danny:

Kris! Pleasure to see ya here
Avatar 10:44pm coelacanth∅:

thanks sbp i bookmarked it. (aside from the cool flame burning i can't play videos on this laptop anyway)
Avatar 10:44pm Kris Holmes:

loving this afro joint
Avatar 10:45pm coelacanth∅:

...the beirut version is quite good. much rather hear i than Terry Jacks'.
Avatar 10:46pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar 10:47pm geezerette:

Dean, Citrus is correct. I'm sorry to hear he died, didn't know. Ed Moses died a week or two ago. He was still making paintings like a thirty year old. 91!
  10:50pm Dean:

A name from the past, Moses! Sorry to hear this. Do you happen to know the work of Lawrence Weschler, an author who chronicles, inter alia, art scenes in LA and NY, e.g., his book about Hockney? I work pretty closely with his brother.
Avatar 10:50pm geezerette:

LOVE this!
Avatar 10:51pm Little Danny:

That bass clarinet!
Avatar 10:52pm geezerette:

Dean, I'm pretty sure I went to high school with his younger brother.
Think we were in same English Lit. class.
  10:54pm Dean:

I can't recall how many siblings. I know there's a sister, but maybe two brothers? But it must be Ray, because I think you and I are roughly the same age, as is Ray.
Avatar 10:54pm geezerette:

Danny, it's a sound you didn't know you needed till you've heard it!
Loving this set.
Avatar 10:55pm northguineahills:

Digging, LD. I have cats fighting over the territory in my front yard for belly rubs, I wish it was a metaphor, unfortunately for me, it's literal.
Avatar 10:57pm geezerette:

Well, whether or not, Lawrence Weschler is a favorite.
Avatar 10:58pm Little Danny:

Weschler is a regular here in Marfaland
Avatar 10:58pm Little Danny:

NGH! That's a dilemma we should all face
Avatar 10:59pm geezerette:

I'll bet! He really gets it.
  10:59pm Dean:

Would this brother, Ray perhaps, know a "geezerette"? Was that your moniker in HS? If so, you were cool beyond words.

Yes! Ren is a fan of a museum or art collection in Marfa! I think we've been around this block before, LD.
  11:00pm MrFab:

think this is a way-out version of "Do The Hucklebuck" aka Bird's "Nows The Time."
Avatar 11:01pm northguineahills:

Was that studio one comp on Soul Jazz Recs?
Avatar 11:01pm geezerette:

No, I was cool exactly at words.
  11:02pm Dean:

You should know, too, that Ray has racked up an achievement or two, too. He and his sister penned the bestselling book on Amazon about fertility, and he has hosted a weekly Berkeley softball league for over twenty years: http://www.eslnotes.com/ray/6.html
Avatar 11:03pm coelacanth:

haha, "geekerette"?
Avatar 11:03pm coelacanth∅:

(that's not an insult!)
Avatar 11:06pm coelacanth∅:

Danny i can't keep my foot from stompin'!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm JtotheK:

@ngh: yes it is on Soul Jazz
Avatar 11:07pm Little Danny:

Thanks Jason!
Avatar 11:08pm Little Danny:

@coel: good!
  11:08pm MrFab:

re this Mussies cut: hello, Link Wray, we salute you!
Avatar 11:10pm geezerette:

WOW !!!!
Avatar 11:12pm coelacanth∅:

i'm sorry but i can't help hearing in my head John Lee Hooker saying "Mussy!"
Avatar 11:12pm northguineahills:

(I'm stealing geekerette)
Avatar 11:14pm coelacanth∅:

okay. i get royalties though!
  11:17pm Dean:

I can describe a context in which bass clarinet is not necessarily welcome. I played one, briefly, '73-'74, when the guy who formerly played it in our junior high school orchestra moved on to high school. Fair warning.
Avatar 11:19pm Little Danny:

Hahaha. I want those demo tapes!

I've read it's an incredibly difficult instrument. Thoughts?
Avatar 11:20pm geezerette:

gorgeous. great piano too.
Avatar 11:20pm still b/p:

The Fielding is nice. I like how it's recorded.
  11:23pm Dean:

I don't recall thinking so. Clarinet, yes, due to embouchure demands, and since fingering shifted from octave to octave, it was easy to move to tenor saxophone, which I also "played." The issue for me, at 14YO, was the size of the bass clarinet. I felt like it towered over me.

Recently played "Peace Piece" off the 1971 Columbia Bill Evans album. That track, and Jack Wilkins' "Red Clay," pretty much turned me on to jazz.
Avatar 11:25pm geezerette:

'Peace Piece", this recording, a favorite. Love Bill Evans.
  11:26pm Dean:

Wait, now I'm confused. "Peace Piece" does not appear on that Columbia album! Yet I distinctly recall hearing it on the radio mid-'70s. So much for my memory... But I did recently play the track off of a CD compilation.
Avatar 11:26pm Little Danny:

"Peace Piece" is late '50s and I believe Evans only did it one time
Avatar 11:27pm geezerette:

Always want my paintings to look like this sounds.
  11:27pm Dean:

Perhaps I heard this Everybody Digs track, but grabbed the first BE LP I could find, the Columbia one.
  11:33pm Dean:

Ah! I played Jean-Yves Thibaudet's tribute on "Conversations with..."!
Avatar 11:35pm Little Danny:

@Dean: That makes sense. Also, Evans apparently played it once and one once - in any context
  11:39pm Dean:

Memory is so strange, particularly when you're not paying attention. I know (97%) I heard "Peace Piece" on radio in the mid-'70s. I know (99%) I bought the '71 Columbia album, and over time many, many more. Some of it all got squished into a discrete event.
Avatar 11:46pm Little Danny:

Warning: surface noise ahoy
  11:48pm Dean:

Just bought that Trojan instrumentals set. Loving those boxes.
  11:49pm Dean:

By which I mean: I bought it because you played it!
Avatar 11:50pm geezerette:

Love this version.
Avatar 11:52pm Little Danny:

I'm honored, Dean. I feel so responsible. I think you'll dig those, though! And that's coming from someone who doesn't care that much about Jamaican music
Avatar 11:53pm Little Danny:

Thanks geez! Definitely a homegrown R&B version.
Avatar 11:54pm geezerette:

The elegance of Mr. Berks.
  11:54pm Dean:

Folks, tomorrow will be James Joyce's birthday. Yesterday was Franz Schubert's. Plan your playlists accordingly.

I care a lot about Jamaican music, but as with so many categories of music, I fear getting pulled into a black hole vortex of hoarding from which I can't escape.
Avatar 11:56pm Little Danny:

Yes indeed geez. Definitely a nicely understated performance
Avatar 11:58pm geezerette:

Dannny, this show is sunshine, dude.
Avatar 11:59pm coelacanth∅:

Brilliant program Danny! Thanks
take care y'all happy groundhog day
  11:59pm MrFab:

Smashing show tonight, Danny, much thanks.
