Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm listener james from westwood:

Evening, Bronwyn and all!
Avatar 7:03pm northguineahills:

We're having the lack of volume problem again...
  7:03pm JtotheK:

Hi Bronwyn, hi everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm coelacanth∅:

and now, the quietest show on wfmu!
hi Bronwyn! it's barely audible.
Avatar 7:05pm glenn:

hewwo, bwonwyn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm BronwynB:

im sorry i genuinely dont know what the issue is, the volume is all the way up on both the board and winamp player. let me see if i can get someone in here to take a look
Avatar 7:05pm northguineahills:

You should be playing Bernhard Gunter and Morton Feldman w/ these volume levels, oh wait, it went up....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm coelacanth∅:

i'm listening on a laptop now and it is not possible to turn it up enough to enjoy it. (both the computer and the player are up all the way)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm listener james from westwood:

It's AOK on my end.
Avatar 7:06pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Maybe I was too loud
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm BronwynB:

im sorry you guys im trying to figure out what the problem is please bear with me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm coelacanth∅:

maybe the eq on the winamp player?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm listener james from westwood:

No worries! Studio C is a cavern of mysteries! Zep is sounding fine over here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm BronwynB:

does this sound better? I'm playing this from a different audio source just to test things
Avatar 7:09pm glenn:

i'm getting some odd stairway thingy.
Avatar 7:10pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

BronwynB: It sounds the same level as the whole show has
Avatar 7:10pm geezerette:

I'm hearing an instrumental version of stairway to heaven,
Avatar 7:10pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

What sends it to the stream? Can that thing be raised?
Avatar 7:11pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Maybe I'm wrong and it got louder. Certainly your mic sounds good!
Avatar 7:12pm geezerette:

chillin' :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm listener james from westwood:

Mic sounds AOK, and I was hearing both tracks fairly well with minimal computer volume on my side.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm coelacanth∅:

i stepped away for a minute but i'm sure it got a bit louder; it's still a lot quieter than the average wfmu show though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm BronwynB:

that's so weird i swear it's turned all the way up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm coelacanth∅:

it just got a little louder?
it's still quieter than average but it's enough, at least over here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm coelacanth∅:

okay i just compared it to the main fmu and the ichiban and it's comparable now.
Avatar 7:18pm still b/p:

It's moved up to near normal for me now, too, after the great lowness. Was it a set of tries and twiddles or a specific "aha" adjustment?
Avatar 7:18pm glenn:

giv'er, b.b.
Avatar 7:19pm northguineahills:

@geezerette 7:10 : crap, not again, stay away from the light, by heaven's holy hells, stay away from the light~!
Avatar 7:23pm northguineahills:

I no longer have my phone at max volume, and it's fine, albeit less then usually (the give the drummer streamer is usually louder then the main stream)
Avatar 7:25pm northguineahills:

ack...! loud voice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm BronwynB:

hello everyone! apologies for the weirdness! thank you for your patience and i hope you still enjoy the show :)
Avatar 7:28pm northguineahills:

Is this Cage's 4'33"? oh, there it is! We all still heart you Bronwyn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm listener james from westwood:

No worries! You're fine!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm BronwynB:

thanks guys!!! is the volume better now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm listener james from westwood:

Could hear it from the kitchen on both the Wilson and this track!
Avatar 7:31pm northguineahills:

The volume is fine at my end.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm steveo:

Just got here. Is this one of those dreams? (I hear it fine and it's surfy goodness.)
Avatar 7:32pm still b/p:

Mine's OK: with levels for player, computer and separate speakers set where they'd typically be for FMU listening, this show level is still just a dight below standard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm coelacanth∅:

it's good Bronwyn! i have main volume higher than usual but not that much. Than you for your dedication!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm BronwynB:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm BronwynB:

Thanks for following up and for sticking with me :)
Avatar 7:33pm glenn:

hmmm. chantays good, nico very quiet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm coelacanth∅:

haha! then again...maybe one of your sound sources has a preamp that's lowered? (or maybe the Nico cd is mastered quiet...probably)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm listener james from westwood:

Love Is Only Sleeping is worth the bumps!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm steveo:

Wow coel, your null set character looks huge in this font!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm BronwynB:

thanks james :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm BronwynB:

i turned the preamp all the way up on the winamp player, does that help?
Avatar 7:44pm northguineahills:

That was the first time I've heard that Nico, thanks!

(didn't show up at work until 11, so, I'm still here)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm BronwynB:

glad you liked it ngh :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm coelacanth∅:

steveo really? i wish i could see that. this laptop doesn't show me the font selections. always the same.
  7:53pm SeanG:

riding high tonight!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm steveo:

@coel photos.app.goo.gl...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm BronwynB:

thanks sean :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm coelacanth∅:

that's how it always is on my computers steve! (except sometimes when someone else has gotten it from a different source it's small)
i need to learn how to do what you just did with a screenshot, since i don't know how to use photobucket and am not sure i want to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm listener james from westwood:

Last set sounded great; thanks in turn for digging into the weirdness!
Avatar 8:04pm northguineahills:

It's a loud quiet! Thanks Bronwyn, I should leave work. chirrups!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm steveo:

Oh hmm. I'm on my phone so can't that's probably the difference. Android phone, ends up on Google photos by magic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm steveo:

Sorry Bronwyn. What am i talking about?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm coelacanth∅:

my main volume is 20% higher than usual. that's not bad. Little Danny's show is much louder than others; Evan's (explorers room) mic breaks are much quieter than others. all, including this now within a good range.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm BronwynB:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm coelacanth∅:

i'm cracking up! if you put a star next to that mic break i'd click it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm BronwynB:

haha yay thanks :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm steveo:

I'll have to go back and listen to the a capella thing, you really sold it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm BronwynB:

thanks :D it's so great!!! another beach boys vocals only i would suggest is sloop john b, specifically for the part right after "sheriff john stone". actual angels
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm steveo:

Lol ok!
Avatar 8:19pm still b/p:

What are they sayin' 'bout Charlie?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm steveo:

Oh Charlie Chapin! Now I get the horn honks...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm BronwynB:

i literally have no idea hahaha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm coelacanth∅:

i've spent many years being repulsed by the beach boys. 1-2 years ago Explorers room did a beach boys program and i enjoyed it. all little known, not commercial stuff.
then something<2 weeks ago led me to read something about Brian and i decided to listen to the entire beach boys catalog in chronological order, doing my best (which can be pretty good) to imagine what it was like the first time, at the time...which i started to do a week ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm coelacanth∅:

i know it's not a popular opinion. i actually have turned off wfmu many times because of the beach boys.
...i've gotten up to pet sounds and i know the best is yet to come, but i have a new, open appreciation for them; and i've had some surprising revelations.
  8:28pm rw:

Hello! Driving home from work in slow traffic. LiOS is helping.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm BronwynB:

I'm so glad rw :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm listener james from westwood:

Just realizing, like, >35 years after the show aired, that this Eagles tune was used as the in-theme for the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" TV show. Have not heard it since the early Reagan era. Wow; thanks for closing this mental loop!
Avatar 8:29pm northguineahills:

@coel: sometime when I was around 23, i had a BB revelation, and Pet Sounds made sense, and the next few albums. I found some polaroids of them in 20/20 I found in a thrift store. My wife framed them and put them on the wall. Her friends would ask me if those were my family. Now the BB are gospel to me.
Avatar 8:31pm northguineahills:

(my wife is of a darker hue then me, so, the BBs looked more like me)
  8:31pm SeanG:

deep cut
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm BronwynB:

@coel: That's actually a really similar trajectory to mine. Until about three and a half years ago I only knew them for Surfin USA, Barbara Ann, etc and I thought they were ungodly lame and had no interest in them whatsoever. Then in late 2014 I was doing a project for college where I had written a script about a radio drama recording gone horribly wrong and it was supposed to be a found recording of the producer berating the writer and actors and them all having a huge fight. Doing research I came across the Help Me Rhonda tape with Murry abusing the boys and was fascinated and then decided, what the hell, I'll listen to a BBs tune, and I ended up picking the aforementioned Sloop John B vocals only mix and I was floored. I then did what you're doing and listened to it all in chronological order and they became my favorite band and they still are, to the point that I've seen BW live four times and literally wrote a screenplay about them
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm BronwynB:

you can tell i really care about the BBs because i write wall of texts about them. and 150-page screenplays!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm BronwynB:

@james: that's where I heard it for the first time! I was obsessed with Hitchhiker's as a kid and I loved the tv series and always thought that tune (particularly the arrangement they used in the series) was such a great theme for it. i was really glad it made it into the movie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm steveo:

Haha, did not realize that was Eagles. Loving this Bowie Floyd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Seems like this show only comes on once in a blue moon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm coelacanth∅:

that's amazing Bronwyn! i 1/2 expected hate mail just for saying what i said.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm foofs:

There's a compilation called 'Endless Bummer' which acts as a good cure for Beach Boys enthusiasm. Anti-drugs radio jingles, Mike Love studio whining about the 'Surf's Up lyrics, all kinds of crap!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm BronwynB:

@foofs: i love endless bummer. it combines my two favorite things: the beach boys and utter shit
Avatar 8:38pm northguineahills:

Yeah, same here, Bronwyn, I thought they were just 60s bubble gum, but a friend turned me on to Sunflower, Pet Sounds and Smile, and I was in love w/ them ever since, and even dig their teeny bop crap as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm coelacanth∅:

well- i always thought i detested mike love's voice, mainly; and i still do! and i don't like him, from what i've read about him (but who knows) but i've also greatly disliked Brian's voice, and now realise how dramatically his singing improved over the first few years. that's one revelation. i really like his singing starting with "today!".
2nd_ Carl was a tremendous Guitarist!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm steveo:

Ok, I'm definitely not going to listen to Sloop John vocals only if it's going to make meme wa to listen to their whole catalog :p
  8:39pm SeanG:

rip it up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm steveo:

Wow I'm bad at phone comments. Fun set!
Avatar 8:40pm northguineahills:

Well, Mike Love is an anti-anything (he's a dick to everyone, even to a friend of mine, but he had talent).
Avatar 8:41pm northguineahills:

I'm off on my Damned, 2008, hummm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm coelacanth∅:

well, i chose to, and i've yet to hear sloop john b vox only...and i'm really looking forward to being home this weekend because "smile" and "sunflower" are coming up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm coelacanth∅:

maybe, ngh, but to be honest - so far, i see mike love as expendable! his only instrument was (is?) singing, & i don't like his voice...but yeah it probably was the right voice for most of the surfin' and car songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm BronwynB:

@coel: mike is the worst. he's the least talented one, a huge jerk, and just overall awful and a big part of the reason the BBs are often regarded as lame and not the innovators and geniuses they really were (IMO)

@steveo: it's gonna happen!!! you can't escape now!!!
  8:45pm nardo:

after the Ivor I was thinking the goons but this will do nicely
  8:45pm SeanG:

eric idle4ever
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm BronwynB:

@sean: when i was a teen i thought eric was the coolest BB because he had long hair and seemed edgy and wrote songs
Avatar 8:46pm northguineahills:

True, Coel y Bronwyn, I concur!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm BronwynB:

not bb! python! eric idle was not in the beach boys!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm coelacanth∅:

- and he was friends with George Harrison the coolest and funniest beatle!
  8:48pm SeanG:

haha! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm Parq:

Hi Bronwyn. I gotta get busy in the kitchen, but happy to join you for the second half. By the way, the guy who played Stig O'Hara in the Rutles *was* in the Beach Boys.
Avatar 8:52pm northguineahills:

Off to see my friend to electronic weirdness. Thanks Bronwyn, keep getting WFMU fill-ins for us!
  8:54pm SeanG:

@coelacanth isn't george just the bestest?!? all things must pass is my desert island disc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm listener james from westwood:

Huge luck on getting the call back you're hoping for!
Avatar 8:56pm still b/p:

I won't trace my BB path...but let's see where this lands: I've never cared for Olivia Newton John's voice and work. Always feels weak and uninteresting. A soft or easy or light voice can be fine, but hers...nuh-uh. Obviously many fans, and people who've disagreed with me, hear something I don't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm BronwynB:

thanks james :))) if im being totally honest part of the reason i want this particular job is because the most convenient way for me to get to FMU from there would be by ferry and i just really want to sail to fmu with the wind in my buzz cut
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm coelacanth∅:

Sean, as a child i was infatuated with George, then as a rebelious teen my friends and i put John on a pedestal; and maybe he should be, but in the end i still like George the best, and despite his religion, can relate to him the most.
  9:00pm listener james from westwood:

That sounds like an excellent reason!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm coelacanth∅:

haha it's as good a reason as any...you know it's not *actually* sailing though!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm BronwynB:

well the view would at least be nicer than the path train!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm steveo:

I was born on George's birthday & my 11 year old loves the Hitchhikers Guide books, just like I did when I was a kid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm BronwynB:

@steveo: that's how old i was when i got into them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm coelacanth∅:

Sean that album is a work of art; one of the first albums i ever bought, as a child ($5.00 new from the record club of america) but i wish there were a stripped-down ("naked") version of it. i'm not into spector's wall of mess production on some of those tracks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm BronwynB:

@still b/p: i don't love olivia either but i'm just endlessly amused by her ring of fire cover :D i also own a pretty sweet record by the 101 strings doing her songs which has a lot of comedic value to it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm steveo:

Greased Lightning was a favorite also when I was a kid. I wonder where that pile of 45s got to....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm BronwynB:

my favorite from grease is still you're the one that i want
Avatar 9:10pm still b/p:

101 Strings doing ONJ...those elements together could cause some catastrophe on the other side of the world or something...or discomfort in my teeth. Maybe a good gift for someone.

Aw, all the folks who used to take transatlantic passage on the big liners would still say, "I sail tomorrow." Say it, say it, sail, sail.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm coelacanth∅:

steve my younger sister also born on that day (& my friend Karen)
-i was hatched on groundhog day. most years i get blamed for things beyond my control.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm BronwynB:

my 101 strings play olivia record was a gift from my godfather who knows i love things that are utter shit (as mentioned above)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm steveo:

Yeah that is an amazing scene in the movie, too, but it doesn't have the word shit in it like Greased Lightning. Haha. I used to fantasize about getting an inflatable kayak when I worked in Jersey City in the early '00s.
  9:14pm SeanG:

@coelacanth yep i know what you mean about the wall of sound, can be a bit much. there are some acoustic demos of those songs available. I've been listening to the traveling wilburys lately. jeff lynne and george=pure gold. :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm steveo:

Cool coel. I don't believe in groundhogs, so you're safe.
Avatar 9:15pm still b/p:

Just this evening I was adding to a playlist of popular instrumentals from 50s-60s that I'm sure some percentage of listeners would regard as utter shit. But they are utterly right for certain things and from certain angles -- lock, shlock and barrel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm coelacanth∅:

Sean i like those demos, that i've heard. precious few - unless i'm not looking in the right place.
  9:24pm listener james from westwood:

Monkey versus Robot!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm coelacanth∅:

greasy kid stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm steveo:

Hi Mom!
  9:36pm Funky16corners:

Hello hello!
Avatar 9:38pm still b/p:

College music moment: I was playing a cassette of Eno's Discreet Music in a studio painting class and a much older woman -- non-traditional student -- says, "Do you think anyone is really enjoying that?" She then said it was like a funeral dirge. I did shut it off with an over-dramatic harrumph about how we could all listen to Top 40 instead and have a great time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm coelacanth∅:

did you say "potterhouse"? if so that leads to Jim Price.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Parq:

Not to put too fine upon it, the Blues Brothers were all about taking obscure R&B and blues hits and introducing them to white college kids who assumed they were original. Their "Rubber Biscuit" was a huge hit on my college campus, where no one (including me, I'm constrained to admit) had ever heard of the Chips' original.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm BronwynB:

Yeah, on the one hand I really appreciate them shining a light on some little-known old songs, but on the other hand I wish they'd given more credit to the original artists (like Abner). The movie has always struck me as such a joyful celebration of that music though.
Avatar 9:48pm still b/p:

Between the familiar numbers from earlier days such as Soul Man and the retro character flavor and the presence in the movie of some artists as tribute/nod, I thought it was pretty clear at the time the Brothers were serving covers, even if I didn't know all the songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Parq:

Honestly, if they had been left purely to their own devices, they might have given the originals more props. But that's just the way the music industry was, and is. For that matter, it's just the way white college kids were, and are. Digging the show BB, gotta get back to the kitchen.
  9:50pm Funky16corners:

Blues Brothers were a gateway, just like the Chesterfield Kings and the Lyres were to the garage punk era.
Avatar 9:53pm still b/p:

The movie, unfortunately, was one of those that had people feeling compelled to describe and reenact almost every damn scene before I saw it.
  9:54pm Funky16corners:

It was kind of a mess but the music was great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm BronwynB:

thanks for listening everyone :D
  9:59pm steveo:

Thanks for the fun, Bronwyn!
  9:59pm listener james from westwood:
