Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Doug Schulkind:

I love the wild, bizarre, psychedelic Bollywood soundtracks (think Ilaiyaraaja) as much as the next guy. But these sweet old simple tunes with their swooning strings and syrupy vocals just thrill me.

Doug, back in the '20s, Nova Scotia radio listeners developed a major fondness for country and western thanks to the big AM signal from Wheeling, West Virginia. WWVA boomed in here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Doug Schulkind:

Friends, if you engage in the activity mentioned in our next song title, please wear non-latex gloves and protective eyewear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Doug Schulkind:

Indeed, WWVA boomed all over.

Just ducking back in. @DutchTheo: of all places in Cape Breton where C&W is part of the genetics, New Waterford is THE place. (Coal mining in Cape Breton since 1722, so heartbreak and hard times kinda defined the area.)

Erik Satie composed the song in C#, Brian in UK.
  10:11am DutchTheo:

Sem, i would not have made that connection: coalmining and nova scotia, more lumber and wood, but i don't know a lot about that area
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am JtotheK:

*saunters in quietly, whispers "hello everyone."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Doug Schulkind:

After Erik Satie died, friends entered his apartment to clean it out and found hundreds of umbrellas in the closet.

Did I make that up or am I remembering correctly?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Doug Schulkind:

Here's a comfy cushion, JtotheK. There's a spot on the floor over by the oscillating fan.
Avatar 10:15am Brian in UK:

Did Eric Satie know Rene Magritte by any chance?
Avatar 10:15am βrian:

Umbrellas? I'd think that would be Magritte.
  10:16am Listener Gregory:

Doug, what is that thumping stringed instrument in the Baqbou piece? An oud?? Or maybe slapping the umbrella.
Avatar 10:16am βrian:

(There was no collusion there.)
Avatar 10:16am Brian in UK:

Doug, what an odd audience you employ.

Avatar 10:17am Sem:

@DutchTheo: it was from Pas-de-Calais, in northeast France, that my grandfather--a coal miner there---emigrated to Canada and Cape Breton, to a waiting job down in the pits. Local history:
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
See for yourself:
  10:18am Listener Gregory:

Hmmm. Well, all I'm sure of is that it's not an umbrella.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Doug Schulkind:

Found this:

"When Erik Satie died in 1925, those closest to him were shocked to discover that the dapper French composer had lived in a filthy, threadbare room with to which he hadn’t admitted a single visitor in 27 years. Now a museum dedicated to his life and work, the dingy apartment was once strewn with hoarded umbrellas and newspapers that almost completely buried its most striking feature: two grand pianos placed one on top of the other, the upper instrument used as storage for letters and parcels. It was at once a haven and a prison for Satie, a secretive, introverted alcoholic who died from cirrhosis of the liver."
Avatar 10:19am Brian in UK:

Looks like an ngoni.
Avatar 10:20am burke:

The book THE BANQUET YEARS has some great Erik Satie material in it.
Avatar 10:20am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am annie:

Sonny Clark, niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Sam Segal:

Oh man, this Sonny Clark number is divine, Doug. Had no idea Tompkins Square was doing jazz reissues. Very excited to hear more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Doug Schulkind:

This radio program is in favor of nude maidens just as long as they're thrumming ngonis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am listener Rey:

Good morning Doug and all you cats. been listening while busy working. But taking a break to concentrate on this here Sonny Clark
  10:30am DutchTheo:

Georgie Porgie, pudding and pie,
Kissed the girls and made them cry,
When the boys came out to play,
Georgie Porgie ran away
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Doug Schulkind:

Yeah, Sam, let's hope this begins a trend for Tompkins Square.

What a beauty, eh, listener Rey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am listener Rey:

Sonny AND Max, what a treat
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Hugo:

That "Sonia" track is also out on the four-cd Sonny Clark compilation from Proper in the UK. Though you'd like to know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Doug Schulkind:

So true, Rey. On the other hand, Max and a cinderblock would be a treat.

HUGO! You always have the straight dope!
  10:33am Listener Gregory:

We received a memo at work saying that thrumming ngonis are NOT permitted on the premises.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Doug Schulkind:

Pretty sure that's Ali Hasaan on trombone and John Gilmore banging the drum on this Sun Ra number.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Doug Schulkind:

That's it, I'm starting a band and calling it the Thrumming Ngonis. Who's in?!?
  10:36am sinner:

My theory is that Georgie Porgie was a tom boy. That's why the girls cried when kissed and why Georgie ran away when the other boys came around.
Avatar 10:37am Brian in UK:

Hello Hugo. Proper also release today Mary Gauthier's Rifles & Rosary Beads.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Hugo:

Hopefully not ngonising.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am listener Rey:

LOL While reading Goergie Porgie all I could hear in my head is Ken's sexual harassment alarm
Avatar 10:39am Brian in UK:

Doug only if I can play the automatically opening ngoni. Oh what a giveaway.
  10:40am DutchTheo:

Orgy porgy Georgie Porgie, Pudding and Pie,
Consists of vamps with wicked eyes
That makes up his dish, I only wish
That he would just kiss me
  10:48am DutchTheo:

Dial S for Sonny! The creator has a master plan
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Hugo:

Thanks for the info, Brian. Definitely one to get and on a very serious subject, too, from what I can read. I try to catch her whenever she's in town. Actually, she talked about this project last time I saw her here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Doug Schulkind:

Such an erudite crowd that gathers here!
Avatar 10:53am Brian in UK:

Hugo we are going to see her on Wednesday, only just got tickets though. Given that she is probably more popular in Europe than back home I am sure that she will be back.
Avatar 10:54am βrian:

Avatar 10:54am βrian:

Avatar 10:55am Brian in UK:

Doug, no adveritising please, other glues are available.
Avatar 10:59am still b/p:

I see a lot of talk about umbrellas back a bit. Last night I watched The Umbrellas of Cherbourg for the first time. Coincidence,...? (Spicoli voice) Nooo waaaaayyyyy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Doug Schulkind:

I have been to Mary Gauthier's hometown: Thibodeaux, Louisiana. Sat in the courthouse there and watched a day in the trial of a small, rural town suing a big energy corporation for poisoning the local water supply (or something like that). It was fascinating. The corporate attorneys were treating the local lawyers like rag dolls.
  11:02am DutchTheo:

I only was triggered by the Toto eating toffee pudding story from Brian, no offence!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Hugo:

Looks like she's only doing UK gigs in Europe so far this year. Special message for our dear host: She will be in Pittsburgh at the Club Cafe on March 12.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Doug Schulkind:

Hmmm, that's a Monday night. One of the slim windows of time that I have to study. Might be tough for me to get there.
  11:06am sinner:

Ohhhhh, Angolan Rebita....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Doug Schulkind:

This Artur Nunes track was playing on the stream right before I came on the air. It fits in perfectly with this set, so I added it. I have no regrets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Doug Schulkind:

The sinner knows...
  11:11am Mr C:

Who was the rhythm section on Sonny Clark session?
  11:11am Dean:

Goddamn corporate attorneys. I once sat in on a meeting with, inter alia, big shot male Microsoft engineers, who tried to taunt an attorney mentor of mine who opposed their efforts to establish a particular technical standard. She's a young woman, average build. Her caustic rebuttal left the big boys collapsed on the floor, quivering and whimpering. Fuckers.
  11:13am Dean:

It was a sweet moment. Also witnessed this same attorney put an FBI spokesperson in her place.

The melody in Saraba is taken from a famous medieval estampie, Lamento di Tristano.
Avatar 11:19am Brian in UK:

Is that Lennie Tristano?
  11:20am ?:

For me, if that'd been PC on bass it woulda been perfect! Nothing against George Duvivier, just that those are 3 all time favorite players. Come to think of it, have PC and Max ever recorded together in a trio setting?

Like Monica said! (She's always two steps ahead.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Stanley:

Doug, don't you go thinking I've not been listening. I have and also worked on a particularly difficult piece of work.
Who says guys cannot multi- task? (Well, bi-task, in my case).
Great show but got to get home in time for The Hink.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Doug Schulkind:

When I'm DJing, I'm never thinking, so you are safe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Hugo:

I am pondering the title of one of the pieces in the jazz set. Literally translated "Wurzelbehandlung" means root treatment. Anything to do with a visit to the dentist?
  11:47am Dean:

Can't wait to hear The Fabulous Quartet.
Avatar 11:47am burke:

@Stanley: I have a hard enough time mono-tasking.
Avatar 11:47am βrian:

I mean, let the kings have their Royal Entrance Fanfare. I will have the Fabulous Playboys!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am JtotheK:

fabulous set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

The fabulous Hinky Dinky Time is up next here on your 24-hour Drummer Stream. Uncle Michael will be wearing a pink chiffon moomoo and little else.

Party happens here:
  11:49am Mr C:

Brought to you by The Fabulous Doug Schulkind!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Doug Schulkind:

You should hear the Fabulouses that didn't make the cut!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Uncle Michael:

Thanks for the morning music, Doug. See you fine folks in the adjacent room.
  11:51am Dean:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Doug Schulkind:

Root treatment could refer to a hair appointment as well. That sounds less painful.
  11:52am Dean:

If WFMU ever changes call letters, it should consider FABU.
Avatar 11:53am still b/p:

The Fabberwock, with ears aflame, came riffing through the funky goods...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am doctorjazz:

Fab ending to a fab show, of course, great weekend all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Doug Schulkind:

FABU sounds like a Sea World whale, Dean.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Hugo:

From which we can infer: The 60s were really fab! (there were a couple of 70s in there, but never mind).
  11:54am Dean:

FABU isn't free. FABU's expensive!

Avatar 11:55am Sem:

Many thanks, Doug, for the proceedings today. See you and the usual attendees next time. Keep it Fab, man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Doug Schulkind:

Right after the show, I am dashing to an interview for an internship at an Alzheimer's research facility. If I don't get it, I may just go ahead and donate my brain to science. (Why pay for parking twice?!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am JtotheK:

thanks for the tunes, doug! good luck with the dashing, and the interview!
Avatar 11:56am βrian:

Happy interviewing, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Doug Schulkind:

I could have played Chey Ivey & His Fabulous Avengers peforming "The Poo Poo Man." But I didn't.
Avatar 11:56am still b/p:

"Why Pay For Parking Twice?" THERE'S the memoir title.
Avatar 11:56am Monica:

good luck with that, doug! music speaks to alzheimer's patients when the rest falls away. thx for the fabu show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am Doug Schulkind:

I've already written papers about music therapy and dementia, Monica!
  11:58am Dean:

Speaking of varieties of dementia, I called my mom (90YO, heading toward 91) yesterday--as I do everyday--and while she's pretty robust for a woman her age, she has been slowing down. For some reason yesterday she only wanted to talk about Biggie Smalls and Tupac.
Avatar 11:58am northguineahills:

Thanks Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Doug Schulkind:

That was funtabulous!
Avatar 12:00pm still b/p:

One-third of this show is worth three times its weight in...almost anything.
Thanks, Doug.
Good luck with the thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm listener james from westwood:

A thousand thanks, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm Doug Schulkind:

You all are the best damn big-eared crew around!
  10:43am DutchTheo:

Hi Doug, (or anyone else) do you know where that gif is from? I can see the name Mose on the bassdrum.
  3:03pm oemer:

I heard in UK Wednesday 31-01-2018 at 19:00-20:00 local time London, a superb 1 hour all sort of interpretations of Planet Claire with a full moon outside at your live stream. I missed the first half. How can I listen to it again please?

Thanks ahead for the linx
