Hi Duane, hi all
Avatar 12:15pm northguineahills:

@Lewis: Years ago, Doug dedicated a whole hour to HM for his bday. I can't remember which year

This episode is definitely a clicky-star!!!
Avatar 12:16pm northguineahills:

Sharpville was the 1960 massacre where apartheid SA police fired on demonstrators protesting the racist conditions.
Avatar 12:16pm SmokinJ:

Greetings all! Thanks for the Hugh Duane! Beautiful stuff...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Passaic River Blues:

Great book by Dorothy Baker that was based somewhat on Beiderbecke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Michael 98145:

from the internetwork : "At the end of 1959, Dollar Brand (later known as Abdullah Ibrahim), Kippie Moeketsi, Makhaya Ntshoko, Johnny Gertze and Hugh formed the Jazz Epistles, the first African jazz group to record an LP."
Avatar 12:22pm northguineahills:

Don't forget Louis Armstrong befriended him.
Avatar 12:22pm Jshatan:

I knew master Masakela would find a proper tribute on the Train!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Passaic River Blues:

This is already really, really good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Michael 98145:

yes, never heard this before now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Little Danny:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm KRYPT:

Hey Duane and the Train,
  12:33pm JakeGould:

Hello! And of course I came in late for this Hugh Masekela tribute. Anyway, better late than never.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Mick:

Thank you so much for this tribute, Duane.
Avatar 12:39pm Beast of Boonton:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Passaic River Blues:

Enjoying this a lot!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm chris:

this one always gives me goosebumps
  12:55pm Saasha Foo:

This is the absolute best tribute ever❤️❤️❤️
Avatar 1:02pm Jeff Moore:

A reminder to listeners who want to hear this killer tribute sounding as good as possible: if you're using a standalone audio player (VLC, iTunes, something like that) check out the "128k AAC" link near the top of the page. I believe it sounds better than the 128k MP3 stream we've had forever - especially in the better way AAC handles vinyl surface noise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Passaic River Blues:

I love that Tom Wilson figures into this story. ... The internet says it's Larry Willis killing it on the piano here. Loving this.
Avatar 1:05pm kwhitehead:

I don't know. I kind of like the "vinyl surface noise."
Avatar 1:06pm Jshatan:

Jeff Moore - dropping science. Thanks for the tip - just switched!
  1:11pm JakeGould:

@Jeff: What about the WFMU app? What is the stream being used there? 128k MP3?
Avatar 1:14pm geezerette:

Greetings from California waking!
Avatar 1:14pm Jeff Moore:

@kwhitehead - I'm not suggesting that the AAC stream gets rid of vinyl surface noise - that would be a whole 'nouther type of processing, which would probably do other violence to the music.

No, what I suggest is that AAC handles quick impulses (like vinyl ticks and pops especially) better in that it passes them through closer to unchanged, which allows our ear/brain system to recognize them as something other than the music and tune them out somewhat.

What MP3 seems to me to do is turn a quick sharp tick into a slightly lower amplitude but longer and messier sound which gets mixed in with the music more.
Avatar 1:16pm Jeff Moore:

@JakeGould: I believe the apps and popups are currently using the MP3 stream. This may change sometime in the future.

Now, sorry for the interruption - let's listen to Duane play HM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm BronwynB:

Holy crap wow I never knew about this cover!!! I love it already!!!!
Avatar 1:18pm northguineahills:

Wow, never heard him do this BB cover. it was Satchmo himself who convinced him to sing.
Avatar 1:18pm kwhitehead:

Duane, no love for "Emancipation"?
Avatar 1:19pm northguineahills:

@Jeff Moore y JakeGould: Yeah, I listen to WFMU at work on my phone (comment via my work puter).
  1:19pm Steiner in Whately Mass:

Hi all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm BennettCap:

Duane, this is a great tribute. I've never listened to his work. Thank you.
Avatar 1:21pm geezerette:

Unbelievable output!
Avatar 1:23pm Jeff Moore:

I totally never knew all this biographical backstory; it's great to hear it along with the music as it developed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm karlward:

Random fact: Open Mike Eagle name-drops Masekela on "The Curse of Hypervigilance (In Politics, Romance & Cohabitation)"

:) great, great music. done just right.
Avatar 1:52pm still b/p:

Who knew? Just looked at a description of it as "Yaphet Kotto's Bizarre 1968 Spoken Word Single," but I say a strong, eminently re-listenable and satisfying single would describe it more suitably than "bizarre."
Avatar 1:53pm HarktheUmpire:

Thanks so much for the last two hours, Duane! A brilliant tribute.
Afraid I gotta run out the door now...
  1:53pm richthegreeb:

I love that yaphett koto single!
