They call my pantry the mason lodge. Tomatoes, liquor, dilly beans, you name it.
Avatar 3:03pm
Cheyenne:

Do you make your own liquor, βrian?

First time here, greetings from the Valley, Cheyenne. A cell just opened up here, pretty good one.

Dilly beans! I just finished the last of a jar at lunch today.

Cool stuff, up my alley, hi Cheyenne and Listerers!

I haven't had a Dilly Bean but I'm guessing they're pickled green beans?
Avatar 3:10pm

Also HI Wendy, drjazz, and Psychspaniolos!
Avatar 3:12pm
βrian:

Some times we marinate fruit in liquor, but that's it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Cheyenne: Yup! I don't know about anywhere else, but people take them pretty seriously in my part of New England. Green beans grow well here, so it's a good way to can them for cold-weather enjoyment.
Avatar 3:14pm
βrian:

Yes, dilly beans are green beans pickled with garlic, red pepper flakes, dill, and coriander. A crunchy delight, and nothing beats having one in a martini.
Avatar 3:15pm
Cheyenne:

Cool! I am familiar with all manner of weird Appalachian preserved foods but not so much the Nor'easter varieties. Salt corn, shucky beans/leather britches, et al.
Avatar 3:15pm
βrian:

Coincidentally, the first time I had dilly beans was at a sort-of commune in Plainfield, VT.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Brian: Something beats dilly beans with a martini. Dilly beans with CHEESE. Duh. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Brian: Plainfield? Was it the Radical Faeries?
Avatar 3:16pm
northguineahills:

Never heard of dilly beans, but I love all things pickled (as I nosh on some cabbage kimchi, oh, and I have some Russian dill pickled cucumbers in the fridge [I forgot to take lunch, so I'm having a really late lunch break])
Avatar 3:16pm
βrian:

No, the New Hamburger. (Yes, really.)
Avatar 3:17pm
Cheyenne:

I like daikon kimchi a lot. It's crunchier!
  3:17pm
melinda:

What are leather britches?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Brian: I guess a new hamburger is better than an old hamburger.
  3:18pm
melinda:

"Sort-of commune" haha
Avatar 3:18pm
northguineahills:

The Asian supermarket here is limited to cabbage and carrot kimchis, at least they're home made.
Avatar 3:19pm
βrian:

Hah, I found a reference here:
vermonthistory.org...
Avatar 3:19pm
Cheyenne:

Leather britches are dried green or pole beans that you tie on a string to hang in your kitchen until you need them. I guess someone thought they looked like lederhosen!
Avatar 3:20pm
βrian:

I take it one has to soak those beans before using.
Avatar 3:21pm
Cheyenne:

Soak and/or slow cook for a long time to rehydrate, yes.
  3:25pm
melinda:

@Brian I can't look up the link on my device but looks like it sort of coincides with the time my late husband spent in Plainfield at Goddard.

I like Bob's Country Bunker, where they have both kinds of music: country and western.
Avatar 3:30pm
βrian:

Louisville? You must know Floyds Knobs. (Never been there but I know it vicariously.)
Avatar 3:31pm
Cheyenne:

Floyds Knobs is in southern Indiana, really the only part of Indiana with any hills. It's where the last Ice Age glaciers stopped. It's purty.
Avatar 3:32pm
Cheyenne:

Also, a place further down in the state: Knob Creek (a place Lincoln hung out for a couple years, and the namesake of a bourbon that's pretty good). There's a ... knob... and a ... creek there.
Avatar 3:33pm
Cheyenne:

And for the uninitiated: a 'knob' is a high, rounded hill. Appalachia is full of 'em.
Avatar 3:33pm
βrian:

Where I live in Wisconsin is near the edge of the glaciated terrain. What a difference a few billion pounds of ice can make!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm

Howdy Cheyenne and party go-ers.
Got to say the first set was very good stuff.
